See the below info for any clarifications to the video.
This video covers a modified version of the finger-jointed boxes from my previous video. This tray will automatically calculate the number of fingers needed, and the fingers will automatically resize themselves, based on the dimensions of the box, and an "optimal" finger width that you can change to your liking.
Adjust the fingerw parameter to change the optimal finger width.
6:24 - The hfingerw parameter should be equal to "ciheight/hfingers"
14:39 - When I added the midpoint line to the left side of the front panel face, I mentioned adding the perpendicular constraint to the line and the left edge of the panel. Unfortunately, in the video, I did not actually perform that operation. Make sure to add that constraint, if F360 didn't, to make sure the height fingers don't go off in an odd direction when you change the height of the tray.

Here's a puzzle for you (me). How to offset the face of all "female" (or "male") notches/tabs such that when CNC machines they fit without interference. Simply adding an overcut to the CNC process would overcut the entire perimeter, so tabs would get shorter and notches would get deeper and wider, which is generally problematic since you aren't controlling what gets offset. And some parts, like sides have a combination of tabs/notches to adjust and some to leave alone (bottom or side). I'm trying to figure out the best way to accomplish. My problem is since the previous part is used to cut the next part, I'd have to add the face offsets to the previous part after the cut. And since it's not doe to the original feature, parameters fail if notches are added. Maybe make 2 bodies for the "cutting" parts, one that does the cutting, one that has the offsets applied. Only CNC the offset ones. . Grateful for suggestions.

Thanks for the great design. I used your design to create a sort of 'bookend' (a box with only 4 out of 6 sides), but with the 2 sides which are vertical, I have a problem. The 2D contour selection doesn't 'catch' the contour of the face. I think because they are not 'flat' on the surface. What step did I miss?

This is amazing! I'm a newb and bring to figure this whole fusion world out. Is there a way to change everything over to inches in the parameters?

Many thanks for this and the series, enjoying working through them. I'm trying to make a box from this with a different front thickness to the rest of the box. I can think of a few ways to incorporate that (new sketch, 2nd extrude etc) but am interested in how you'd you it please? New and trying to get my head round the most efficient ways of working.
@HobbyistMaker
@HobbyistMaker 5 лет назад
You don't need a new sketch, just a 2nd extrude with the appropriate thickness. Depending on where you place the thicker side, you may have to manually duplicate the fingers on two opposing sides, to make sure they're at the right depth.

Excellent tutorial. It is very useful to have the explanation of 'why' you are choosing the parameters. As an old school 2D AutoCAD user, making the shift to parametrically/timeline driven CAD has been especially difficult. Drawing habits developed in 2D AutoCAD have a tendency to break when modifications are made to the timeline. This is forcing me to relearn drawing habits. Do you have an interest in board games? I saw your project folder in one of your previous videos. I am using my new laser to make inserts for my board game collection.
@HobbyistMaker
@HobbyistMaker 6 лет назад
I don't have a lot of 2D CAD experience, but I have suffered through some of the same problems, just as a matter of thinking in a somewhat linear design workflow. Really spending time learning the timeline, and the useful order of operations has been a bit painful. I've been getting into board games over the last 2 years or so, especially now that my son is old enough to start enjoying them, so I'm also using my Glowforge to make inserts for game; among many other things.

Great tutorial! I'm wondering if there is a need to provide some "gap parameter" which can add e.g. 0.1mm of empty space between finger joints? How bodies are jointed if gap is 0mm? Do you have experience with laser cutting of the wood with this model?
@HobbyistMaker
@HobbyistMaker 4 года назад
I adjust the gap when I export the the file for cutting on the laser or CNC. If you're not going to use the CAM module to export the files then you may need to add a gap parameter to account for the spacing of the joints. I've also been working on a F360 plugin that might help you. The latest release is here: github.com/hobbyistmaker/TabGen/tree/v0.56-alpha

Hi! Great video! However I am having trouble getting some of the equations that you are using in your parameters to work in my Fusion360. Im not sure if this is because this was made 5 years ago and maybe some of the "rules" have changed? I need to use this process often in my work so any help would be appreciated, thanks!

This was a great tutorial! Is there a reason not to use midplanes and mirror the three sides? I mirrored the bottom body and used the four side walls as tools to cut the notches in the top of the box.
@HobbyistMaker
@HobbyistMaker 5 лет назад
I try to avoid midplanes when I can. I vaguely remember having an issue with them when I was putting this together, but I don't recall what it was.

Great approach! How do you deal with tolerances? So it all fits in the end. Thanks
@HobbyistMaker
@HobbyistMaker 5 лет назад
It depends on the design. For finger joints, I use the CAM module to export the design, and I can adjust the kerf of the cut in that module. For designs that require specific tolerances in specific features where kerf adjustments won't work, I will include a tolerance parameter that can be used to adjust the size of the feature.

@@HobbyistMaker Thank you so much for this! I'm 3D printing these pieces and I need to include clearance so that the fingers fit the notches. Would mind suggesting a good way to create a clearance parameter to include with the rest of the parameters for this model? Many thanks!

@@HobbyistMaker hypothetically, if i downloaded your file, is it possible to do this just by changing some parameters or anything like that? Goal here is no bottom, top, or dividers. Just 4 sides :)
@HobbyistMaker
@HobbyistMaker 4 года назад
Kevin Carmody the file itself could be modified to do what you want, but it would probably be easier to do it from scratch. I really need to free up some time to do some more videos, but in the mean time, you can also try to use the F360 plugin that I’ve been developing to do finger joints on bodies.
