What's hilarious is that it's played as a joke but it was actually a first for television: the first televised interracial kiss. And Wariodude128 is correct - Shatner and Nichols flubbed their scenes over 100 times until the director gave up and they left the kiss in the episode. Also, such a hilarious burn if you choose to interpret it that way!
@@efulmer8675 sadly that isn't true there are several films and shows broadcast either here in the UK or in the US, even if you were to specify a white European and a black African that accolade appears to belong to "You in Your Small Corner" in 1962 on British TV, although it does look like Star Trek gets to claim the first US broadcast and presumably the first internationally distributed interracial kiss between black and white actors incidentally Shatner is credited with another interracial kiss that predates Star Trek in 1958 with French actress France Nuyen who was of Asian descent
I just realized that now that Nichelle has left us 🕊 the only OG Trek actors left ALL wore yellow uniforms (Shatner, Takei and Koenig) blue uniforms (Nimoy and Kelley) red uniforms (Nichols and Doohan)

We miss you, wonderful lady. -- Lots of tributes the past several days. All of them very positive. She was one fine lady, a great NASA recruiter, excellent as Uhura, a talented singer and dancer. How great it would've been to have more in her role as Uhura, and other roles.

1:29 I always thought Uhura’s joke about being heroic by kissing Shatner was a joke at Shatner, but their kiss was the first interracial kiss on American TV. So it was pretty heroic of her.
