I think Chicago is particularly well-poised for a revival, given its affordability (relative to other major US cities like LA, NYC, SF, etc.), and the vitality of its diverse job market. There's plenty of physical room to grow, particularly in the central areas of the city, which currently see the most population growth.

AS individuals are still 'battling' my earlier posts - which were based on actual personal observations and location familiarity ... I will once again post the FACTS which validated my PERSONAL perception. Please note that I am not hating on Chicago - I love Chicago and consider it one of the best urban places in America but, in my recent visit was surprised that it hadn't seen much growth or change in the past 7-10 years. Best wishes to all; remember to social distance so that we can soon again enjoy our urban spaces. If Covid-19 has made anything clear to me it is that, without theatres, restaurants, bars, shops etc, living in a downtown core has no advantage when society is closed as it currently is. Happy Good Friday, God bless you no matter what your faith. Cheers FACT - Chicago CURRENTLY has more skyscrapers than Toronto. According to a recently released study from 'The Council on Tall Buildings & Urban Habitat', Toronto has 67 skyscrapers. However, an additional 31 skyscrapers (defined as a building over 150 metres) are currently under construction (plus an additional 59 proposals which will begin construction within the next 3 years). Meanwhile, Chicago currently boasts 126 skyscrapers but, the city only has a COMBINED TOTAL of 19 buildings which are BOTH under construction AND proposed. This means that; "Within a few years, Toronto will have 157 skyscrapers while Chicago will have 145, bringing Canad's largest city to second place in North America after New York's 284 skyscrapers". And that is not even including its future plans, of its approvals and proposals, which include “the 78”, “Lincoln yards”, and “One Central”. Just those “Mega Projects” come out to around 30 more high rises, which altogether come out to around 60 to 70 projects at this point. So Toronto may have plans for 90 more projects, but even if Chicago builds just 60 more, it won’t surpass “The Windy City” on an international level!!!....Also, by the way, the information you got your statistics from, which is known as “The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) is based in Chicago, Illinois.

Back in the day, my opinion was that Chicago rivaled (was better even) than Canada's Toronto, Ontario. However, it seems that between 2010-2019, Chicago has stood still while Toronto has skyrocketed! @@chination1796 you obviously haven't been to Toronto recently! Back in the day (a decade or so ago) the buildings in Chicago seemed higher and more dense than those in Toronto however, today it is the COMPLETE 100% opposite. I visited Chicago Sept 11 - 16 2019 and was surprised at how stubby, short and old the buildings were. Within the past decade, Toronto has clearly knocked Chicago out of the ballpark in terms of height, density and architectural vibrancy. I was honestly stunned at how stagnant Chicago was. (having last visited in 2013) Nothing had changed aside from perhaps a half dozen newer buildings. Meanwhile, in Toronto, every spare parcel of land is under construction with a massive tower - some reaching 85/90 stories - the entire city has transformed in high and density, leaving Chicago far behind.

@@Napp28 don't you know how many supertalls Chicago has under construction & under proposal right now? Many! Chicago's downtown is growing everyday there's a big construction boom going on right now. @Napp28
@Napp28 4 года назад
@@chination1796 I am not saying Chicago isn't strong and inspiring, I love Chicago and feel that it is an amazing city. I was however, legitimately SURPRISED that the city hadn't changed much since my previous visit 7 years ago. In years past, Chicago always felt taller and more dense than Toronto but, now in 2019 - the opposite is VERY true. I enjoyed my recent visit to the windy city and will return in the spring but, it was obvious to me that Toronto has seen much greater growth in terms of architecture, height, density and population whereas Chicago has remained stagnant. The new buildings going up in Toronto is actually a bit alarming as all older structures are being taken down and replaced by this HUGE modern buildings which reach at LEAST 65 floors - and they are going up EVERYWHERE. All this Chicago talk, I would kill for a pizza from Uno right about now. Ha ha - Toronto might now have more impressive architecture and skyline but, Chicago will always have better pizza! MUCH BETTER - Toronto pizza SUCKS!

@@chination1796 Funny: I left my computer and felt I had to come back to write about a major downside to the progress which Toronto has seen over the past 10 years. When I was in Chicago I loved that the nightlife hadn't changed. Places (restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs) that I enjoyed years ago were, more or less, still around (though obviously some had been updated). Toronto is concerning in this respect. All older buildings and empty lots are being turned into high-rises & I fear that in this 'growth', Toronto is losing some of the essence which makes a large city great. In my experience I can think of EIGHT establishments in my own little neighbourhood which I used to enjoy that are now ALL GONE due to being taken down and replaced with towers (yes, 8)! I think that Chicago (and America in general) has a greater appreciation for heritage architecture and the establishments which usually are within than Canada does. I often sigh in Toronto, "Not everything should be a modern, tall, sleek glass mega structure - should it? Absolutely NOT!!"

I think they should really invest in low income communities and fix all of chicago not just downtown or get on the aldermen of those ghetto neighborhoods like Garfield park, Inglewood and/or west Humboldt park but O Well it does look amazing do. Fellow Humboldt parker

I noticed it takes a while for the taller structures to get developed or get the green light to build. Its a slow process moving through neighborhood groups in Chicago. They are always voting for shorter projects for traffic reasons etc. unlike Asia, Dubai and New York. By the way Willis Tower is totally outdated :(

I'm glad to see america actually building some cool skyscrapers again, dubi litterally tore the crown off of America and punched america in the face with their futuristic cities and tall ass buildings, leaving america looking like it's still the 80s over here. So I'm glad to see so many Chicago projects coming to life

BUILD THEM AND MORE. This alderman stuff is garbage. Also look you don't move downtown for Suburban non traffic and congestion. People move downtown for the energy and sky scrapers, people and shopping beauty, restaurants and so on. If you want suburban living you know you can catch any Express way. Try i55 south or something. Sick of these peoples stunting Chicago's growth, population, stature, economy and world position because they are trying to live a suburban lifestyle in the heart of the city. Sick.

Miami has more skyscrapers than Chicago. Miami has the largest population of skyscrapers on the east coast, outside of Manhattan. all those buildings in chicago are old condos. Miami has 500 skyscrapers over 70 stores, and about 12 of those are over 80 stories tall. google "Miami skyline 2019". Also, Miami will have the 2nd tallest skyscraper on the east coast in 2022. look up "Miami future tall skyscrapers".

And those skyscrapers will be even more dramatic in a couple of decades as they stick up from the waters of the Atlantic, the former city of Miami sitting Atlantis like on ythe ocean floor.

These are all beautiful and impressive but the first word that comes to mind is "overkill". Is there that much economic activity occurring in Chicago these days, a city that Trump claims is a crime haven?
@imo1933
@imo1933 4 года назад
Glister: *Why did Trump build here if he thinks Chicago is a crime haven, is it because Trump doesn't want any competition for his Trump Tower? And yes, there is that much economic activity in Chicago regardless of the bad press it's been getting, it hasn't deterred investors from building in Chicago.*

Just more giant boxes. The rest of the world has advanced the skyscraper design concept beyond the giant filing cabinet stage to beautiful new "futuristic" designs with curves and sweeping majesty. But back here in the USA, it is the same old giant boxes. Yawn. I think these major cities need more progressive planning and approval boards. It is the 21st century, not 1960.
