after wrestling with html and notepad for 10+ years, this year I moved all my URLs and domains over to Google Sites. breathatkingly easy to use, simple, clean layout. I run my businesses from them. Would like more features, but well, way to go Google!
Not sure if this is gonna be read by the Google team, but here goes... A Feature that I would really like to see is being able to provide Page level Access... I play a few online games that have Teams / Guilds, and would like to share content, advice, tips, Team and Member Related Stats. I would like to designate Content ("Pages") to specific Members or Groups, like Team Leaders, Moderators, Organisers, Battle / Combat Leaders etc. Not everyone should be aloud to see everything. The best workaround for now is to create seperate sites for each scenario, but that starts to get messy when I now have to update multiple sites with the same content and becomes very messy and time consuming... I truly hope that you bring Page Level Access/ Permission to the New sites.
It would be really great if you could add back in page level permissions. In an education environment, using classic google sites, you could create a project site and assign specific students editing rights on specific pages. That limited them to just those areas. With new sites that isn't possible. You can only make someone a global editor on a site.
Google Sites in its own breakout session. Happy to see this. I've been designing Google Sites for years and always wanted this transparency. Thanks Sites team.
Why learn an entirely new development platform which is still quirky, in its infancy and offers very little flexibility? All so that it cleanly integrates with Google's extended platform? There are so many other low cost, feature rich, scalable, flexible ways to produce a website these days, Google has to do 10x more to be competitive here. Whats that you said? Guaranteed high rankings...No? I didn't think so. I don't see any upside to using Google sites at this point. Perhaps down the road it will be amazing, but then again perhaps it will be G+
I like the improvements, but I think there should be an advanced mode where were can deeper customize aspects of the sites. Right now it's still missing features that artists might want to have, like clicking on an image to zoom.
@Quinn Marc I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
New Google site is excellent for a very niche target group but not for every business. Google form is not something business will find secure to use, nor is Google Site is fully compliant with General Data Regulatory Policy and similar regulatory guidelines. The protection of CIDs is paramount for any online business. Trying to solve these and many other business problems while building a site with Google Site for a client lead me to discover all the limitations from a business perspective. New GS is a great fun and no brainers tool many will enjoy using it but the platform is limited to Google users and has limitations. Many free competitive tools does much better job at the moment, specially when it comes to using forms to collect sensitive data, security vulnerabilities, access management and protection of privacy.
Until the new Sites has feature parity with classic Sites, it will not be used widely by people needing high integration with google groups and other apps. At the moment it’s just a toy.
Great presentation. I would like to know if these features are for those who have GSuite account or for anyone with a personal Gmail account. I am a social science researcher and I love Google platform. Unfortunately, Google Sites at this stage still lacks some fundamental features that are essential for websites these days.
Can these Sites advertise and sell products? Will they be visible and respond to search queries by customers looking for the services and products that I and others provide?
I am really hoping that theme customization comes soon. I have had to resort to importing all my text in HTML boxes with CSS sheets included in every box to ensure my content displays correctly. It would be nice if it were as simple as either one css upload, or integrated theme building functions. It would also be killer if the sites included a blog function. Getting an external blog embedded and looking good was NOT an easy task, particularly when I didn't want it to show an ugly scrollbar on the side. I also think that it would be great if individual pages could be audience locked to only those you have added. It'd be kind of a pain to make an entirely separate site just to make an audience locked section, even when it's supposed to match the original site in the first place. Some sort of small Ecommerce/Online Store function would be AMAZING to have included. Honestly, sites has so much potential, I really think it needs to be given more resources to be developed.
I hate the New Sites. I cannot event select the font or color of text. No sub-pages, no control over who sees what. No way to put files or documents on a web page.
Honestly, not counting cutting and pasting code (which is not user-friendly), the feature list is worse than anything making web pages 20 years ago. So although it has some potential (I use it for notes and online tips), it needs lots of basic features asap. I feel that Google has given this a very low amount of resources, and they will probably all be spent on trying to get a conversion (old sites to new sites) working which is challenging even if they had enough resources. If they gave up on the conversion and put all their limited resources on the basics they might have a real win. Otherwise its another Allo \ Google+ \ Hangouts\.....
I'm probably the only girl commenting here but I am really not liking the new Google Sites. I am going to start looking for another alternative outside of Google because I have fear that I won't be able to replicate my old Google site. I want the ability to customize everything and to have limited visibility with links. So, is the new Google Sites designed for Baby Boomers who have limited critical thinking skills - who can't figure out things from experimentation? Baby Boomers please don't come after me with a hatchet. I love you! Anyway, I am a millennial and my sister is Generation Z and we hate this new version. And why does it look like a powerpoint presentation when you open up the new Google Sites? It's already a really bad start to using the new product. The new Google Sites looks like it was made for my grandma. The buttons are super large. Do you think i'm blind? Ok, there are some good things. One, it's connected to Google Drive. That is all I can think of. You flopped on Google+. Don't flop on Google Sites.
No offenses, but there is a kind of friction when we use Google Sites that we don't find anymore in modern apps. I did the same educational website in Google Sites and in Notion, and the latter one was pretty much easier to both develop and use. Besides that, have you guys seen Microsoft Fluid Framework? The boundaries among websites, wikis and documents like texts, spreadsheets, presentations are coming to an end. I believe you guys should take this into consideration and even buy modern solutions instead of going further.
Guys, all said and done but one of the most unprofessional part of your google site is while sharing the google site link on any social media, the preview appears as a generic site.google.com link and not the customised site link. Its so unprofessional and unexpected from google
Google Site Still Sucks. At least they have to give option to use traditional code. Like there is no option for repositioning the header image, no option to set height of the sections. No customization support for layouts. 🤔🤔🤔
