For those who have cavity walls I recommend filling the cavity first and then adding 75 or 100mm EWI. On top of that proper ventilation, ideally heat recovery system. Tricky areas are usually around roof eaves where often it's hard to insulate properly. In terms of durability of renders, for those who have some doubts i recommend going to Poland where over 90% of houses have EWI installed and you can check it for yourself. Most of my friends have it for 20-30 years and there is absolutely no issues at all.
@@PlasteringForBeginners this is the opposite of future proofing. Ensuring in the future this rotting garbage will need removing. How do you sleep at night? How many elderly people have you sold this scam to?
Great to see you back, i hope everything is good, thanks for your videos over the years, you and Kirk Johnson, have giving me soo much confidence to plaster and rendering, thank you 👍🏻
Good work Blaine I did the Baumit course a few years back as well but we use a 1.5m toothed straight edge for the first coat and put the second pass on wetter and finish with spats. To be honest never really got on with the star contact like you said tends to tear up a bit, think ecorend FX4 is a much nicer product to work with but we’re all different 👍
Worth mentioning that there are limited scenarios where this insulation system is appropriate. On a ventilated cavity wall the benefit is undermined by the fact that you have outside air circulating behind the insulation layer. And on a solid wall you risk issues with interstitial damp, where they're designed to work with vapour open materials.
@@coolmonkey619very true. I don’t price for this system unless it’s a council grant. Don’t know if there’s any truth in it but was told what you save on your energy bill would take 40yrs to recuperate the cost of the work. So for me not worth quoting for just price for a straight out thin coat render
For the plugs you can get a eps router, perfectly cuts the recess. Tighten the mexhanical fixing so its snug into the eps inside this recess, then the plug finishes level and gap free.
Hi there , I’m a time served plasterer from way back and I’ve not done any rendering for over 30 years. I don’t know about modern materials but I am doing a job at home. I’ve removed all the vertical roof tiles from the front of the house ( trendy when the house was built in 1960 ) . I’ve put Eco therm insulation up and put cement board over the top of that, now I want to flat render it to match the rest of it. My problem is what material to use ? Like I said I haven’t done any rendering for over 30 years and I’m in my very very late 60’ . Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 👍
Absolutely stunning work pal I did the baumit ewi course. Is it OK to diamond float star contact. How's it float up? Also who's your supplier for baumit I've a large ewi job to price up
Blaine can the silicone render be applied to a masonry background after the base coat, or is it just insulation system and cement boards? Keep up the good work 👍
totally agree with you...alway rule your render in order to achieve a flat surface that will look good when the sun ''hits'' it from the ''sweet points'' ....for those that know what I mean!
What i really wonder. En did not see a video yet wo explain it. How to cover the bottum part from floating. Can we make this all the way till under ground somehow?
@ndewhurst1007 Polish people are proud, I'm sure even they would tell you that they're the "polish contractors". People need to stop feeling second-hand racism
@@Bergamot88yet still if it had been white English workers would their nationality have been mentioned?? Probably not. Polish tend to work a lot harder than the average English lad in my experience. Most English don’t want to work, the amount of English labourers I’ve seen who don’t want to lift a muscle unless it’s lifting their phone up ffs.
Very informative video as usual - I'd be interested to know if such a system can be repaired. Ours is 10 years old and areas of the coloured render have cracked and come away to reveal the undercoat. Is it possible to apply a new layer of coloured render to patch?
It makes no sense insulating the cold side of the wall . In building regs when you apply pir to cavity you fix it to inside block work leaving a 10mm gap between external wall and pir. Does this comply with current regs for something like an extension ?
Instead of having a cold damp house, you get a warm damp house with cold spots, which is where the mould will grow. It also looks a bit odd, especially on one half of a semi detached. Mind you the job I’ve witnessed was carried out by the cowboys opposites. So no surprises there 😂😂
I'm in the process of doing mine and about to apply the base coat render, but will spray the silicone. Installing the insulation boards is relatively easy, but it takes a lot of time on your own. If I struggle with the applying the render I will hire a pro for that part. Doing the install yourself is about a quarter of the cost of hiring someone.
@@lukepeacham9663 I was a bit worried about that too, but it turned out to be easier than I thought. There's a RU-vid channel called AKT Solar where a complete novice installs EWI, which is worth watching. I also did a training course on it, which I would recommend as you can have a go at the processes before you tackle your own property.
Definitely not an insulation system, krend weber all same them insulation boards are nothing more than carrier boards , 1 good knock and its a hole, plus one year later all stained under windows etc
Huge mistake dotting and dabbing the insulation to the brickwork. Air gaps behind the insulation can degrade the thermal performance by 25%!!! The whole surface of the batts should be covered with glue to prevent this. All edges to be buttered as well.
Really good plasterer, good builder in general imo. But these vapour closed materials are just going to create a new wave of dilapidated homes in the next 10 yearsx shame on baumit as they know the benefit of vapour open materials but choose not to educate the uk and just sell product to compete with kingspan etc
Yeah totally agree not only an expensive system to install but old solid brick houses have generally got some sort of damp so literally creating a potential problem internally. Not only that hate the sound of the hollowness and easily damaged
@@bluevanmani yea styrofoam insulation is weird. Baumit are cheeky, the star contact adhesive is highly permeable and they have entire systems that are vapour open and practically compatible for any form of home. But they clearly realised a lot of their UK market are stubborn gypsum plasterers looking to expand and sealing surfaces is all they know, so why fight them 😂
