About 6 months ago, I had the traction cable (self-propelled cable) on my 2008 Toro Recycler snap while I was working, and after all the discomfort, and extra hassle I had to put up with the past couple months, I finally decided to break things down, and solve my problem. Here, check out how I did it.
Here's the cable you will need (part # 119-2379)
www.repairclinic.com/PartDetai...
This part will work with any Toro lawnmower that's FWD.

U did a great job for a young fellow don't worry about the guy who made fun of your tools. You are going to be alright in life. I wonder what he was doing when he was your age, remember you are helping people and that's a good way to be

I'm a child of the 70's. Divorced parents, single mother trying to raise three sons. There was no such thing as a tool box. We had a small plastic bin hanging in the closet with a handful of actual "tools". Jake's video is a reminder of that time. Making-do with what was on hand with no parents around.

Thanks for this - I didn't need to replace the whole cable, just tighten it and nobody in their videos mentioned or showed that like you did - this helped me out a lot today, thanks a lot!

Hi Jake I just bought my used TORO Recycler a week ago the self-propel wasn't working so I replaced the belt still no go. Figured it must be the cable so watched your Tutorial now ready to head to the mower repair shop for the cable to install myself thanks to you. In Florida lawn mowing is a year round job no snow.

Thank you for posting this. My traction cable broke last week and I wanted to see how difficult it would be to replace it myself. You made it look easy so I am going to try it myself. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video, Jake. My traction cable broke and without your video I wouldn't have known how to replace it. Couldn't figure out how to get the black plastic cover off but your video showed all the steps.

Excellent video my man! 2 tips: Use Saran wrap on the gas intake and a paper towel over that and then screw the gas cap back on and you will never have a gas leak while working on the mower while on its side. The 2nd tip is the clean off all that stuff on the bottom of the mower while you have it over. You can use several solvents to loosen all that crap up. Otherwise, you taught me something today! Great Job!

Or put a garden hose on the blue spigot on top of the deck. That is what that is there for.

Next time you go to do the nut that is hidden behind the shroud, try a 13 mm socket and a extension bar and you don't have to take the shroud off.

Very good segment. I like that it's simple and even with some of the more common tools, the job can be completed. Well done.

Jake you are a natural, to add even more value to your repair videos consider helpful tips along your repair, like change a spark plug or replace a worn tension belt when doing this repair. Practical tips for the DIY mechanic. Nice job

Hi Jake! Great video - very helpful. I replaced my cable in a snap thanks to your advice. Unfortunately, my problem appears to be the transmission, not the cable. Rats. Keep making great videos!

This video was invaluable to me. I could have done w/o the beginning of the video, but the technical part on how to replace the cable was great. In my opinion the most important thing to know about replacing the traction cable is that the cable will appear as being too long when you first go to install it. My online research showed others thought they had too long of a cable as well. After checking a few websites and watching this video again, I realized that upper cable anchor (rubber piece attached to upper handle that cable goes through) tightens up the cable. Just be sure the coiled part of the cable (at the top of the black rubber cable housing) is in that anchor. After you insert the top of the cable, tighten the nut on the rubber cable anchor until you get the tension needed to engage the belt.

Nice job young man. I'm impressed you tackled a job like this at your age. Keep on doing what you're doing and don't shy away from any job. If it's tough, take your time, analyze the problem. Think through it. Research (and Google it as well). You'll find a lot of satisfaction comes from fixing things yourself (and you'll know it's been done right!). Thanks for posting!

Your right, when I was his age, I took care of the lawn and mower. I learned a lot about small engine carburetors, worn wheels, cables, etc. I always remember usually my dad bought the cheapest mower he could find, and it seems they always needed repairs. And ever since then I have never taken a small mower to a shop...My riding mower has been to a neighborhood guy who fixes mowers. Especially changing the blades and some of the hidden grease fittings. (why do the manufacture always have one grease fitting the is way up under everything, and I can't just tip it over.)

Good job, if I may be a little critical on one part is that you should never turn the mower on its side, it will pore everything into the carb, should lift the front so it rests on the rear handles. other than that great job youngster. keep on doing these videos they are very helpful.

Great video Bro! you wrestling with that frame piece trying to yank it out was hilarious. You are becoming good with the technical mower stuff man, have you watched donyboy? he is the best small engine guy on RU-vid. Also, those "thick then thin" areas in the backyard - that's from the dogs. They pee closest to the bottom of the stairs in winter so they can run back inside quick. That's why it's mostly dark and thick green from the deck stairs and just around them. The further out into the lawn you get, there are some dark green spots but not as many - that's where Thor was venturing out further to pee. The pee acts like fertilizer and jumpstarts those areas early in the spring. If you put down some milorganite at full strenghth it should even the color out. But the front yard is your real challenge - there everyone walks on it. I am looking forward to your series on that!! Glad to see you back for the season!

Very helpful thanks my dude. Also on my mower to detatch the metal guard on the bottom. There are places on the side where you push in to release the catch. I still need a hammer though.

Good video, kid. Don't worry about the crabs. My 2002 Toro cable and broke several years ago, In a pinch, took a .052 guitar string and tie it between the lever and broken cable, it's worked great for 3 summers now, lol. But I think it's time I just buy a new mower.

after reviewing several how to's for the same repair; I thought you might like to know that the removal of that one piece that was the hardest of the entire process appears to be unnecessary. Save yourself time and possible damage when taking a hammer to something that doesnt need to be removed.
@michaelmartin1985
@michaelmartin1985 Год назад
Also, should never turn the mower on its side because it will flood into the carb. should be turned up from the front to back.

Very good video. I replaced this part about the same time you did. Some tool advice: 1). Buy and use the best you can afford. It will some times last longer than the part being repaired. 2). Use the right tool for the job. Using incorrect tools ALWAYS ends with busted knuckles(or worse) or stripped or broken parts. it also saves time unless you have an engineering degree or the same brain power on your side (you may be in this latter category. My father was in it too. 30 + yrs Diesel mechanic who designed and created some of his own tools. Side note. Sorry don't mean to highjack this post. Father past march 2017 and I am trying to get those tools before my brothers. They are soooo cool!)
