THIS ONLY APPLIES TO THE FX CROWN
In this video I discuss whether it is worth getting a .177 and .22 barrel for your FX Crown Air Rifle if you are subject to the UK Sub 12 ft / lb law. Does it work properly or are you just throwing your money away ?

It turns out that this issue applies only to the FX Crown that does not have special Sub 12ft lb barrel options. The FX Impact has different barrels for the UK market, but the Crown does not. Therefore do not buy an FX Crown in sub 12 ft lb and expect to swap barrels out and still get close to sub 12 ft lb. It will not work.
@johnowers47
@johnowers47 5 лет назад
Steve, the barrel for the impact is the same as the Crown, they have different shrouds. There is no reason why FX cannot fit the sub 12 barrel end the same as the impact.
@airgunology

Not what I have heard from ASI the importer to the UK for FX. Have you tried it yourself, an FX sub 12 barrel in a Crown ?

BSA used to sell a PCP rifle (I believe it was called the Firebird) with interchangeable barrels in .22 and .177 and the .177 barrel was longer which brought up the power of the less efficient smaller pellet. In a precharged air rifle barrel length plays a major part in the development of power the same as powder burners. In this case buy a .177 at sub 12 ft lbs and reduce the length of a .22 cal barrel until the power is reduced to sub 12 ft lbs. I remember reading that Webley and Scott found the difference in swapping barrels from .22 to .177 to be 18 percent drop in power.

Well done with the explanation and for exposing the problem. I don't think however that problem is so much with the FX but is with the law itself. Here in Canada we are limited to muzzle velocity to determine license requirements. Any device designed to produce more than 500 feet per second, must require an FAC or firearms acquisition certificate to own. So be careful what you wish for because the UK may very well adopt the same law. Toss away foot pounds and substitute for FPS. Imagine being restricted to 500 FPS with an air gun! Your point was made clear however, thanks for the video.
@airgunology
@airgunology 5 лет назад
True, as I said, FX make a cracking rifle and it is not their problem. It is the UK law that is causing the problem and making not worth buying FX barrels if sub 12. I am sure happens in other power limited countries too. It is a kinda taboo subject and I know it is catching out buyers
@airgunsniper-elite7385
@airgunsniper-elite7385 5 лет назад
That's interesting about the Canadian laws. I was in Canada back in the early 80s and the laws were not so tough then, but if you are limited by the 500 ft/p/s rule then the largest calibre would make the most sense, or is the calibre restricted to .177 and .22, as a rifle using a .30 calibre would create way more energy than a .177. A JSB Exact weighing 8.44 grains at 500 ft/p/s is only 4.68 ft/lbs which is well under our air pistol laws, where as a 50.15 grain JSB Exact in .30 calibre pushes out a whopping 27.84 ft/lbs of energy. Not the brightest of laws considering this, so it puts the Canadians in the same boat as here in the UK. "Laws that don't make much sense".
@GarnetCarmichael
@GarnetCarmichael 5 лет назад
I partially agree except that the Canadian law was designed to EXCLUDE bows from being restricted. A crossbow can easily exceed 12 FP but not the 500 fps restrictions. The law pertains to any device not just guns. So if you have a compound bow for example that produces 45 FP but does not exceed 500 FPS than it is not required that you have an FAC certificate to buy or lend one or borrow one.

I think some folk apply just too say theve got a fire arms cert ... luckily for me , should I get the " urge " too hunt big game ( which Is very unlikely ) id go hunting with me son , hes got all the licences needed and permissions for foxing ect ect .. I'll stick too sub 12 in my back yard ..and maybe a spot of ratting now and again .. kinda makes the " crown " an overpriced " hey look what ive got " rifle ...probably no more accurate then my typhoon ...

Absolutely spot on. I’ve yet to see any power adjustable sub12 gun on the range that outshoots my fixed power sub12. You start at sub12 and the only way is down. I mean no disrespect (😐) but I’ve seen so many Impacts sold in bits because shooters buy one and overnight become an expert tuner, only to completely ruin the gun. One guy has had three in the past six months and all are, and this is the technical term, completely knackered. Not even a gunsmith has been able to fix the last one as it is. It basically needs a full rebuild with all new parts. (i.e. a new gun)

I've got the fx crown with 177 barrel and .22 barrel and there both running 11.5ftbs and 11.7 ftb so they work the hole in the 177 barrel is bigger so works more efficient if the .22 barrel had the same size hole it would be over the legal limit of 12ftbs

You can get sub 12 barrels for the impact, but not the crown as of Nov 18 according to ASI the importer. So I am very interested in how you have 12 sub barrels for .22 and .177 for your crown that give 11.x ftlbs on max settings with no adjustments between barrel swaps. Thanks

It's just as fun to me as shooting them. My reason to get it was for the tinkering ability plus it's just different to other rifles on the market. I also tend to strip and rebuild them my self so keeping warranties dosnt bother me I also have an BSA R10 SE with huma reg and shoots just aswell as my dad's daystate wolverine R minus the shot count. I was going to get a wolverine R but I can shoot my dad's rifle so ordered the crown just to be different if im disappointed ill just sell it on or send it back fingers crossed ill be happy with it

I may have stirred a little hornets nest on this. I have found mixed messages and have pieced it all together in the video. If you have got a sub 12 .177 then the 1st thing I would do is chrono it to ensure under 12 ft lb. I am sure it will be. If you decide to get a .22 barrel for it, ensure it has a 2mm or less transfer port otherwise you will be illegal. As far as I know, you can't get this barrel yet in the UK for the crown, but you can for the impact.

@airgunsniper-elite7385
@airgunsniper-elite7385 5 лет назад
Nice one Steve. The efficiency difference is well known between the two calibres. It's a shame that there is not enough ability to bring the power up if you originally own one in .22 then drop down to .177. It would be best to buy the .177 first then make the adjustments to bring the .22 down from the .177 settings. After all it's the users responsibility to make sure that there air rifle is legal when used. The user can't blame the dealer for an overpowered rifle once purchased, as it would then be your responsibility to make sure it was within the 12 ft/lb limit. The laws really are crazy in the UK when it comes to airguns. We have a club member with the FX Impact in both calibres. I haven't seen him in a while, but I will ask him if he is having the same problems with his. I expect as long as the rifle is shooting within the law no matter which barrel is fitted at the time, you can't go wrong. If the .177 is tuned up to the legal limit, you are fine. You would obviously need to make all the adjustments before fitting the .22 barrel, then once fitted as long as it falls within the legal limit, then you are fine again. I am sure there are users out there that have managed to sort this one out. It would only be illegal if you fitted the .22 barrel with the .177 settings, so as long as you work out the settings with each barrel and make the adjustments afterwards before fitting either barrel, then that is the way around it.
@airgunology
@airgunology 5 лет назад
Unfortunately as you say, the laws in the UK are crazy. We are not allowed to be given permission to TURN DOWN the .22 with the dials to bring it sub 22 as we are not to be trusted. So this throttles the FX's with swapable barrels in 177 variant.

Great clip. I knew this was going to be probably the case . but glad you tested it. some crono tests with the figures would have made it a lot better. The proof is in the pudding as they say! UK Sub 12ft lb law is a difficult subject. If I stick an h&n piledriver pellet in any of my sub 11.5ft 177 guns they go over the limit!! Also it is the responsibility of the owner not the gunshop to make sure the gun is legal. I know someone that bought a brand new gun and when he tested it it was around 14ft lb .What do you do ? Stick it in the boot and take it back! Get stopped & 5 years in Prison awaits you! Or ring the police to explain you have an unlicensed firearm at your property that wasn't your fault!

"Also it is the responsibility of the owner not the gunshop to make sure the gun is legal." - not when they first sell it to you. It is the responsibility of the RFD to check that the weapon they are selling to you is legal for you to own. That applies to all airweapons and firearms. I know quite a few shooters at my club who have bought airguns that have been over the limit. Fortunately, the shooters have chrono'd those guns and returned them for a refund. I know many shooters who don't own one, and I bought my first chrono two years ago, despite having been shooting for forty years.

Surely more air for the .177 would mean simply drilling out the entry port at the end of the barrel as long as the mod stays below 12 ft/lbs at the muzzle? Or have I read that all wrong? Anyway, great video and convinces me if going for an FX, then go for the Impact. Also, I had no idea just how long this rifle is when the shroud is pulled fully out. Nearly four feet long goes a little beyond a 'hunting' air rifle despite its incredible accuracy. Might just stick with my HW 100. Yup, you'll make a few enemies but outweighed by friends for daring to challenge the claims for this otherwise superb air weapon but certainly not, sub 12 lbs UK side. Thanks.

thats BS, if ive paid just under £2000 for a airgun and it was making 9 foot pounds i would send it back. you are paying for a gun that is not producing. should be making minimum 11.3, that still gives you a safe margin when using heavier pellets. @@airgunology The barrel end was sent to a friend from FX, it is what should be fitted to any UK sourced rifle in .22 calibre.... 2mm transfer port. However if people get there barrels elsewhere, ie Kral etc, fron abroad, they will receive an FAC barrel with a 4mm transfer port. Regards John

@@johnowers47 mmmm, interesting. This would be the proper way to sort out the problem. The barrel in question here came direct from the importer of FX into the UK, to a RFD and then was set up as a sub 12 ft lb. I will look more into this
@johnowers47
@johnowers47 5 лет назад
@@airgunology Steve, I forgot to mention these are Impact barrels, but you see my point, if the rifle was set up with the 2mm port to 11.5ft lb .22 cal, the .177 will be around the same ftlb due to its larger port. I don't own a Crown but if the Impact barrels are 2mm port the Crown should be as well.
@airgunology
@airgunology 5 лет назад
Yes now corrected, it seems this problem is only on the Crown where the sub 12 barrels are not available and they ship FAC barrels only. This topic is darn confusing with twists and turns everyday trying to work out what is what ;)

Steve the hole in the .22 brass sleeve is smaller than the full power US version, so FX is localising these for the UK market, but they just got the sizes wrong 😂still way too large for 16J setup. 55bar for .22 come on. That’s a German 7.5J setpoint. If they had got the TP sizes correct in the first place both the hammer spring and regulator could have been set a lot higher. Good for the tuners can milk the owners 😭 ...what about the barrels, was the FX smootwist so revolutionary good that it had to be updated/abruptly discontinued? 😜

won't work. Buy in 177 and drop in a 22 barrel and the 22 barrel will be illegal. Get caught at a range or shooting and it is a firearms offence, serious problems and rifle taken away from you to be destroyed.

question if its leagle requirment to make it not east to adjust a rifle over 12 lb .. how come SMK put a screw at the back of their rifles that adjusts the hammer ans can be done without taking the rifle apart ... iv asked a few people this an their stumped
@airgunsniper-elite7385
@airgunsniper-elite7385 5 лет назад
Several airgun manufacturers came together to bring in anti tamper several years ago, which is not a legal requirement, it was done by the manufacturers. If it were illegal there are many rifles out their, pre anti tamper that can be adjusted. Not all of the manufacturers followed the anti tamper rule. It's not illegal to adjust the power of your airgun, but when you do you should always make sure that it falls within the legal limit and use a chronograph. Different pellets can make as much difference as 2 ft/lbs through the same rifle barrel, so most manufactures choose to go on the low side of 11 ft/lbs or even 10.5 ft/lb to make sure that they don't go well over the legal limit with an efficient pellet.

Yes the Artemis M30 has a screw where you can change the regulator easily. But you can also easily damage the rifle. See below about anti tamper.

Are we tried this Yes a big silver disc at back with a screw in it We stripped it down as well Ok not to tec its as Steve said applies to all importers They set HS to max Then in SMK they set The regulator valve to only allow air to fill plem to give 11.5 at mussel so if you increase HS tension the Mussel energy stays the same increasing more will take energy down the only way round it is to have access to both HS and Regulator but in SMKs the reg is a regulator flow valve can’t be fiddle with in there rifles but can be adjusted on there 700 pistols We did try a harder hammer spring and found to are astonishment they had built in a safety to stop this the first shot we fired dumped a full tube of air straight out the barrel brown trouser job all round To have this safety on a relevantly cheap rifle is excellent I think when hammer hit air valve head the strength of the new hammer spring pushing down on it must have kept air valve open and regulator flow valve We still talk about it today think the rifle was a M3 type one of the first pcp batches

@airgunology
@airgunology 2 года назад
If the 177 is just under 12ftlb, then no as the .22 will be over with a simple barrel and probe change. You could need a "proper" 12ftlb 22 barrel which I don't think exist. The only way you can do it is by detuning via dials, but then the police "could" turn the dials back and put you back over. Hence the issue

So if they first sell you a .177 and then sell you a .22 the company is breaking the law? Maybe a lawsuit or reporting them will force them to sell a .22 tweaked barrel
@airgunology
@airgunology 5 лет назад
true, and technically yes they are breaking the RFD law, but I am sure they have a get out clause and it is you ultimately responsible. The problem is they will sell you the barrel, but no on the gun, so they can claim they didn't sell you an illegal rifle.
