thanks mate! yup, those wagons are made to tranport steel coils, mostly they put the fresh & hot milled coils on those wagons and let them cool down and transport on short routes. for longer hauls they use the covered versions (14:40) no mixed freight on irish rails? wow :( Cheers! :)

Thanks for that information. I must try and learn more about German and other European railways. Railfreight has declined seriously in recent years. Irish Rail, the state company, ceased it's own intermodal services in 2005. Cement traffic ceased in 2009 along with shale. Many other freight flows ended in the late 1990s and in the last decade too such as Barytes ore, Gypsum, Fertiliser, Ammonia, bagged cement, sugar beet and oil. Nowadays there are only four regular freight flows left in Ireland. Two chartered intermodal services, the timber seen in this video and zinc ore:(

***** youre very welcome, just feel free to ask! :) its hard to see the downfall of railfreight, we had much more traffic back in the 90s, but nearly all steel mills, coking plants, coal mines and general heavy industry is closed down :( (in the video im standing at an old NOKIA television and cellphone plant, its now a storage for DHL, just for example) gladly i am living in the so called ruhrarea, so we got TyssenKrupp Steel, a cokery and a black coal mine in around 20km radius plus the ruhr river and the rhine and some canals which makes up the mixed (transit-)traffic here. but hell, i am really shocked that the freigh traffic is sooo down in ireland, four services is nearly nothing :((( fingers crossed that they keep those trains in service, hauling all the stuff on trucks & roads isnt that entertaining (and env. friendly) are there no private railcompanies in ireland? thats what revitalised the railways back here

Germany still has industry but there is little industry in Ireland except for computers, pharmaceuticals and whisky. Guinness stout and Harp lager used to be carried by rail from various breweries. There was plans for a new service carrying alcohol but that has now been cancelled. There is a steel train that runs monthly from Waterford Port to Portlaoise where Irish Rail have their depot. The 'steel train' is more of a nickname though because it is just a train of new rails. Ireland is the largest producer of zinc and lead ore in Europe but there are only two mines currently and both of these will be closed before 2019. A new deposit of zinc has been discovered near the railway so hopefully it will be carried by rail to a port. Apparently there is a new Biomass processing plant being built and hopefully this will be rail served. There are no private companies in Ireland yet but the laws were changed several years ago to allow private companies to run trains. I would like to see a private railfreight company start running trains. There needs to be a state railway thought because currently most lines lose HUGE amounts of money, except for Dublin suburban trains.

***** i have to admin that i have no clue how good or bad the irish rail infrastructre is. here in germany back in the time nearly every small village and factory had their railwaysidings or was connected to the mainlines, in the 80s the state railway started to abandon those tracks rapidly, in the early 90s some private companies registered that theres still demand for passenger and/or freighttraffic (in this video the passengertraffic is maintained by Abelio Rail a subsidiary of the dutch state railway) lets hope that the new plant, the new mine and maybe some privat companies bring some freight back to the railway and some nice capture for you in the future! i like the idea with those beer-trains though :)
