every time i go into my trunk to look at my gijoes it just brings me too tears…. i think i needed just five more years of my child hood back..GIJOE WAS THE BEST TOY EVER…watching the cartoon while playing with my joes was the best
I miss the days when I could go to a Toys r Us and look down the whole aisle at nothing but those awesome characters and their distinctive backing card. I wish I could share that with my little boy today.
My perspective on collecting vintage MOC has drastically changed as Michael has brought an extremely valid intelligent point about age & breakdown of the rubber component. This is why I love this channel. Very insightful information and truth by Michael & Melinda. Please keep up the fantastic work Retroblasting!
I was riveted to this vid. Staring at the pile of Joe stuff, visually identifying pieces. That is a great collection. Scrap Iron and Recondo were my faves.
Wow, this is like opening King Tut's tomb for the first time. My collection was in similar condition, but I didn't leave it untouched for 25 years (going back in reorganizing and repairing them over time).
Watched this earlier tonight and wanted to comment...watching this rediscovery and restoration of your pals retro toys vid is really fun to witness. This Should be an ongoing segment.
I agree with Joe. I have to clean out my dad's basement this summer, have to go through my old archive of He-Man and G.I. Joe collection, was going to donate them to RetroBlasting. That is, if you don't mind a few more pieces to your collection. Couldn't think of a better place for the memories to end up. Keep up the great work Michael
Oh man. This makes me want to dig out my collection and restore them all and that would take the better part of a month to do. I noticed the extra parts you had at the end, and those look like they came from one of the extra acessoiers pack they use to sell. I add might to buying several of them.
Wow! That's a fantastic find! It's rare to see a collection so complete and well cared for from childhood. GI Joe was my #1 favorite toy growing up. I still have most of it in storage, somewhere. I even have some of the boxes the vehicles came in, minus the holes cut out for the file cards. That boxart was just too nice to throw away!
10:45 The spare Stalker rifle also came with the Battle Platform. I see a couple of the other rifles that came with it, as well as part of the platform itself, so that's probably where that came from. Sorry for the belated input! Amazing collection
Sweet find, parents get a gold star! I don't mind replacing Joe-rings, but yea MOTUs are a pain. And you're totally right on carded toys, open 'em or repro seal it if you like the carded look.
I still have my figures from 1982-1989 and tons of weapons. I haven't seen them in over 15 years I pulled them out after watching your video and was shocked to find the o ring trouble most are in half. Damn life is too short. Good job repairing them.
I seen that last video you did of your other co-workers collection, these are fun to watch, seeing a collection being brought back to life and checking out all those cool figures from our childhood!!!
Firefly, still on frequency! I actually repaired some MOTU figures using original parts. I salvaged several rubber leg attachments from broken, crunched and otherwise un-repairable figures. It takes patience, but it's worth it. My goal is to someday make new rubber parts for those guys.
heh, reminds me of when I was a kid, I got rock and roll in what 83 or 84. First day I had him I went to a friends and the O-ring broke within 5 mins of playing with him. His mom's boyfriend bunched up a bunch of rubberbands took the GI joe apart and fixed it. First time I had ever seen a GI Joe apart...well ofc after that I figured out how to do that and mix and matched my GI Joes.... god I miss the 80's.
these toy videos bring back so many awesome memories that I want my son to have when he gets my age! alas, toys today don't quite have the character guys my age did! in my opinion anyways! thanks for sharing!
I love your input on everything just amazed on how the o ring dissolves or becomes brittle during time and not like the small guns etc etc wich are more exposed to heat cold etc . Great Job unfortunately my Joe collection was taken to the dump .
dude, you're awesome. don't let anyone tell you otherwise. i wish you lived on my street. i have so many sites to show you. boxes upon boxes upon boxes of original toys from my childhood. you would go bannanas!
I bought some crappy Storm Shadow figures from Ebay and pieced them together to make a pretty new-looking white-colored one. After some paint touch-ups (the cobra logo was a bitch!), I now have one of the gems of my collection, kept in a small blister case!
My mother gave all my toys away to her friends kids back in the mid-late ‘80s. I still hold anger in me from it. Comic books, baseball cards, Stompers, GiJoes, He Man and others. She gave it all away when I turned 12-13.
I had over 200 vehicles and playsets and 300 figures. sold 99% of them over a year ago. still have the inserts and about 30 figures left. killer whale and rolling thunder were my favorites of the Joe vehicles and the rattler and moray were my favorite cobra vehicles. never had the super large playsets or vehicles like flagg or mobile command center.

This was actually an interesting monologue. Well done Michael.
"Back to their owner," I was like aww. I need an original Firefly and Battle Android Trooper again. Mine got mixed in with my friend's stash, ended up at the curb "with the rest of the garbage." - Carrie Fisher ESB.
Michael, speaking off Masters Of The Universe repair, can you guys do a video on that? Thus showing the proper tools and supplies needed? I think many would be very appreciative of this type of video. :)
Totally agree with you on the "screw" theory. I do exactly the same thing and put them in wd40 or oil and soak. Actually have a screw collection in a jar I keep specifically for this purpose.
Almost makes me regret grinding down sparklers and firecrackers and having one last epic GI joe battle that ended in a dozen melted vehicles and dozens of blackened Joes and Star Wars characters two hours before my first rock concert.
Good day! What screws do you use to replace the old ones? (assuming you can't use the old one's anymore.) I use screws form busted Cassette tapes. But now thanks to CD's, and other digital storage devices, cassette tapes are hard to get by.
Cool of you to do this for your friend, and taking us along for the ride You missed a few complete figures Cross Country, Ace, Copperhead, and the H.I.S.S. Driver. Granted all but Ace came no accessories other than there vehicles ;-) I think you mean "Snow Serpent", because there was no such G.I. Joe figure known as "Arctic Viper" in the vintage line (nor in the modern line I think)
man, i wish i had all my old joes back...i was an idiot and traded them for a small collection of nes games back in the early 90's. I had all the ones listed here..and then some :(
Probably that HISS tank driver never left the seat and that is why the figure's symbol is perfect. It looks like the younger brother and the older brother were through G.I. Joe for many years since those figures covers the span of 1983-1986 and they were loyal enough to stay with the franchise four Christmas in a row, being Jinx probably the swan song of these kids.
I understand the love of Collectors wanted MOC figures but I'm the same way. I want to play with the figure & display it that way but I'm not immune to wanted those MOC'S as well because of the wonderful artwork.
There is a shop not far from where I live that sells second hand toys and such. There are many loose figures with small toy bins of random action figures just cluttered in them. And among them are GI JOE.But they've seen better days. Some have their paint pealing and scraped, others have loose elbow and knee joints which prevent them from being able to stand. But the biggest nitpick is the case a broken crotches.I'm not kidding, I found a Duke and Falcon figure, and the piece of plastic that is pretty much the groin have broken clean off.
Maybe they were packed away in a time where the world wasn't quite so throw away! ;@) Interesting to hear your thoughts on MOC Joe's I wonder the difference between a figure that has been played with and one on card in terms of the stresses on the rubber bands and subsequent deterioration. Loss of sound at 9:20 ish Guys not sure if your aware or if that's my end, an important vid for a Joe collector. Cheers Fuzz.
Awesome as soon as I saw that Copperhead come out I thought yep there's gotta be some cool joes in there ..just a note it's Snow Serpent not Arctic Viper anyway that was cool....
I think I owned at least ten 1st version Storm Shadow figures. I kept buying 2 or 3 every time I saw them in stores. I was afraid they'd stop making them and if all my other ones broke I'd be without one. I probably owned the same amount of the 2nd version Snake Eyes figures too (plus one 1st version). But the 1st storm shadow was so much better then the subsequent versions and the snake eyes models were all good.
That was epic , he had a nice collection how cool of you to fix them . I want to start collecting Gi joes from the 80s as I love them even tho I'm 14 lol. Any advice you could give me!
G.I. joe has always been my favorite as a kid and the only figure from watching your video I’m never of replacing the o ring is Zartan, Zandar and Zarana since my guide said those figure are glued together because of their sun changing gimmick and tips on it without breaking those figures?
It was rare for me to lose parts with my star wars collection, im now 17 and still have all of the lightsabers and blasters (except for yodas lightsaber) as for my transformers im only missing a small part from ROTF scout dead end, ROTF scout rollbars left arm and deluxe animated prowls blue siren, i kept my toys in bins so it was rare for me to lose parts
I have to agree with trying to keep original screws. My problem are the heads of screws so worn that you cannot unscrew and I know I have to drill with tinny bit by my fear damaging figures. Thankfully I have few practice ones, before working on someone like 1982 Scarelet. There few I really hate and new sure what to do. Like Zartan. His figure hard to take apart...
You can buy rubber o-rings at Home Depot or lowes, I believe the half inch diameter but if you google it you can double check me. They are easy to replace.
dude i notice u like mask , i got a cool story about the mask toys the company one friend of mine and the people that worked at the company in the 80s its a lil long but once i see my new video from u guys ill tell u about it ull love it its amazing
very interesting what you say about carded gi joe s that will have problems with o ring. that s because this is a line that i collect loose for figures and boxed for véhicules. but and perhaps you can answer me : Why it seems more difficult to find gi joe boxed than starwars ?
My dad worked at factory when I was a kid so he gave me O rings but they where a pinch to big so they a little wobbly. What I hated when Joe’s crotch broke
I have a question why gi joe at 1991 have figure of a russian soldier "red star" (a potencial enemy at the time) and not have figures of allies like british commandos or french foreign legion soldiers?....
Would old Joes really fall apart in the package like that? I know old blister packaging isn't air tight or anything, but what about all those plastic cases and such people put them in, wouldn't that prolong the rubber parts at least a little?
I swear I'd never heard "jury rigged" until this video. Instead, always "jerry rigged.'' A google search let me know that "jury rigged" is the original, and more often used, version of the phrasing. Not a factoid I expected to pull from this haha
They are mirror images of each other. One has the Cobra emblem on the left, the other on the right. Same with the shoulder guard and sash. Xamot however has a scar on his cheek and Tomax does not. They were sold as a pair in 1985 and 1986.
