How to Play G Major Chord on Guitar The Right Way!
In this beginner guitar lesson, I teach you how to play a G chord on guitar in a better way. Often one of the biggest challenges beginners struggle with when learning how to play guitar, is switching from one chord to another smoothly. If you are a beginner guitar player, this is going to be a very important lesson, because this will be a game changer when it comes to learning how to change guitar chords smoothly.
Often the traditional way to play a G chord makes it difficult to switch from one chord to another, because all of the fingers have to change position. If you learn how to play the G chord in the way I will show you in this lesson, you will find switching to other chords much easier because you will use common fingers (fingers that are in the same position for both chords)
If you are a beginner guitar player and trying to learn how to play a G chord on guitar, you don't want to miss this guitar lesson.

I found this very interesting. I'm a beginner that has been practicing diligently for about 4 months. I am an older adult with small hands and short fingers and am having problems muting the A string with my 2nd finger while trying to play the G chord.

I’m learning as well but my father is experienced. With me he would suggest- making sure fingernails are short, maybe holding down the string closer to the fret (it’s not about pushing HARD), perhaps looking at another way to play the chord (like excluding the bottom string “e” to play it with just the top two fingers), or maybe even the guitar is too big for you. I’ve been playing on a Luna brand guitar and it’s a slightly smaller size overall than a big ol regular full-size acoustic guitar. Otherwise I’m sure I’d be in a similar situation. Good luck, friends. Practice and time will light the way

Maybe you try not practicing the whole chord at once. Maybe you get used to fingers 3 and 4 on the 5th and 6th string one day. Then you practice fingers 1 and 2 on the 2nd and 3rd string one day. Then you put them together?

I was taught this G when I first started playing. I now find the "normal" G a bit awkward. Your G is my go- to. Mind you, I technically it's called a "G Major" but as an alternative it fits perfectly. Love your way of teaching, thanks. Subscribed 👍

Alice in Chains' "Nutshell" is that Em7, leave your fingers there for a Gmaj, hit a quick Dmaj, then that Cadd9. I play a Gmaj with my ring finger (no pinky) for the final chorus of the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" because it sounds more hollow or flimsy and in my opinion matches the lyrics. I enjoyed your video!

@@Studio33guitar I like to say I've been a Beginner Guitarist for about 30 years now! Back in September I decided to try and get more serious about it and bought a very nice (for me) Fender American Professional II Stratocaster. For years I'd play $80 Craigslist specials, or similar beginner guitars. This new guitar has been an absolute joy to play with and learn on. All those years I never knew.

Awesome. On some songs, I find it sounds better when going from Gmaj to C the traditional Cmaj sounds better and the Cadd9 is okay when going from Dmaj to Cadd9. Again on some songs and also when playing just the guitar. When other instruments come along, I don't mind going from Gmaj to Cadd9 in those same lyrics.

@@Studio33guitar I played a bit in high school and stopped. Just picked it back up after about 15 years and am trying to learn as much as I can. Your tip for the G to the C chord is really helpful because so many songs go from a G to a C quickly and my fret hand does not want to cooperate with the normal change. Thanks again!

Hi! What is your the Gibson Model Guitar????

I just use my ring finger to barre the B and high E strings and play it as a four string chord, with my thumb muting the two lowest strings...although once in a while I'll fret the A string with my thumb and play it as a 5-string chord. In both cases that frees up my index, middle, and pinky fingers to go for the next chord. But being self-taught I'm full of bad habits...
@Studio33guitar

That would work too! Sometimes with playing guitar, if it works it works! Thanks for the comment. How long have you been playing?

Its actually a Gadd9 but its all the same. I use the b string as a suspend note from time to time but its often the A string.
@Studio33guitar
@Studio33guitar 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment! It’s actually not a Gadd9, it simply doubling the D note (the 5th) instead of the open B string (the 3rd). A Gadd9 would require adding an A note (the 9th).

I really need help as I don't want to give up trying to learn guitar, but without someone to help I just may have to. My problem is that I have small hands. As IamMorrison says if you don't have our tiny sized hands you just can't relate. So a C-Chord is doable for me on 25.5in scale guitar but getting to a different chord is a struggle. Not a serious problem I am just bringing that up. Where my problem lies is my wrist to the tip of my longest finger is 6.5 inches. Hard to make chords. Now here is the one that made me quit for six months as I was in 24x7 pain with a loss of mobility and that is I cannot get calluses. It is a hereditary issue as they begin to grow, and I go to bed one day to wake up to baby soft fingertips again where everything is painful. SO painful that I do bad things, subconsciously, to stop the pain and it hurts my wrist and thumb joints. How can I play the guitar without calluses? I ask because with them the notes ring out more, but when they go back to soft the strings around the touching fingers are dead due to the pudge caused my a soft pressing onto a hard. I do not have Gorilla grip/Kung-Fu death grip as I work hard to not.

Sounds ok but the c major sounds way better than the cadd9. Cadd9 is missing sounds and just to Me in my opinion doesn’t sound right in most songs.
