The Rangeman 9400 is our best kept secret as people who actually use these for what they are designed for. The Rangeman is the very best G Shock ever made imo.
Agree. Instant start stopwatch and screen record any screen should have been included in the mudman, its what professionals who use these need (so your not pressing loads of buttons to start the stopwatch).
Received mine (tactical black) about a week ago, saw all of the complaints regarding the negative display and decided on the positive display. I personally have no issues with legibility, very happy with it overall. Would definitely recommend it to any person in a physically demanding profession or outdoorsy type like myself👍🏻
I think the design of this Mudman is fantastic. I also think the LCD is still appealing enough for most. The fact it doesn't have bluetooth is great. Next gen will probably be MiP, here's hoping in positive and negative guises cause even being MiP I'd still rather have a positive one. Extremely capable and excessively handsome watch!
I have the positive display 9500 and so far I'm loving it. All I heard was bad things about the negative display versions and how hard they were to read.
I have a Casio ae-1500wh ,paid $20.00 Cdn for it brand new and couldn't be happier. Not the tough and rugged extras the G Shocks have but for the money, its a graet little beater and looks more expensive than it is.
Always goes for a positive display. Yeah, the negative display is really good looking. But, reading in a low light environment. Its suck. I've learned from my experience owing a negative display G-Shock watch previously. When I bought my Mudman 9000, I chose a positive display and I'm happy with it. Anyway, thank you for the review. I'm definitely going to buy this new Mudman. Thank you so much for your efforts.
"The thermometer I kind of disregard as it's only truly effective when it's not on your wrist". This statement always amuses me I have to say. It is like saying "the thermometer (for body temperature/fever) only works when it's under your armpit for 3-5 minutes, so not good". Or "the garden/putdorrs thermometer only truly shows the right temperature when it's in the shade and away from sun reflecting surfaces, not very useful then!". Or "the house thermometer does not work properly if I touch it, so not good!". Statements like these just show a lack of undrstanding of physics. Me on the contrary I truly appreciate the thermometer on such a watch, much more than the one on my smartwatch that need internet to get the temperature (from somewhere hopefully near to where I am). Of couse you need to take the watch off when you need the temperature dude!
Great video and conclusions. This is almost a great watch. This was my favorite color, but the display legibility is poor. So I returned it and get the positive display version, and yes it's a little better. This dual layer display is more reflective. I have the GW-9400 rangeman and compared to this mudman is still one of the best. The stainless steel buttons are easy to use on the rangeman, and some functions are still better, memory,. Also I find the mudman strap is more rigid. But I hope will be better in time.
I went with the positive display. The watch wears very well. I work 9.5-10 hrs a day as a transit operator. I bought the watch ⌚️ for its large numerical display. To replace my Casio AE1500WH-1AV which costs me a whopping $25. (Oh It looks like a G-Shock but the build quality is no where near one 😅.) The tilt display illuminator on the GW9500 is a huge plus because I drive at night and it helps not to have to fidget with the button to turn the light on. Just twist the wrist. 👍🏾
In my eyes, AE15000 is the best module there is. If only the japanese were not so stupid with it... Just put it in an unobtrusive metal case with real tough glas and I will pay $500 for it. Hate those stupid blown out plastic cases they put the things in, it is so bad low class 80s-years gangsta style, nothing to do with the "ruggedness" (there is nothing in it which really needs any serious degree of protection, it is not a mechanical watch), and these miserable acrylic screens which get scratched so easily...
Nice review. I have never liked negative display, so I always go with the positive display. I like that the digits are larger, and since I feel that Casio wrecked the frogman, the Mudman looks to be the best option.
Nice review and totally agreed. I did not buy this model due to a rather faint display. Though MIP may have had issues with displaying the compass overlay. I wish they had used the STN display as metal squares and some more expensive Frogmans for higher definition, ghost free and wider view angle.
Great review. I was ready to buy the Military Green, but your review was so informative. Really disappointed I have to wait for yet another new model to come out (with positive display), but that's better than a regretted purchase.
I have the positive display version and have zero readability issues. Granted, it's a matter of preference, but given all the problems reported by so many over the years regarding the visibility of negative displays in bright & low light conditions, it surprises me that 2 of the first 3 references are negative.
Just bought one. So much cheaper here in Hong Kong (about £200). Amazing watch, robust and functionality is good. I went for the black one with the positive display because of many comments that the negative display is a bit too hard to read.
@@cppss69 Yep. Everything in HK is so much cheaper. I even bought an Omega Seamaster for £4.5K in HK. In the U.K. after VAT you should expect to pay £5.6K.
Thanks for video. Agree, it is beautiful design. And it is really a pity that did not use MIP or STN display like the ProTrek PRW-30, or PRW-35. Imagine in harsh condition like dust, mud, outdoors, etc you press light all the time cause the display is not visible enough. I will be no surprised if come out newer model GW-9510 with better display visibility.
@@dyslexicbien great watch and design! Just if you also require great visible display I would go with some other model with MIP lcd or STN lcd. This watch has just dual layer lcd.
I'm absolutely loving this design. Having all those sensor based features while lacking smartphone functionality makes it a true survival tool. For the lower contrast inverted display, I am getting crazy ideas in my head of hydro-modding it. Which improves contrast and visibility, but in the case of MIP displays destroys the screen over time, as I learned the hard way. Such a fancy standard LCD should survive such a mod though, but it's too expensive and simply silly to do that to such an expensive watch. Still an amazing design with what seems like a very functional UI, unlike the clunky interface of MIP models after the GBD-200 (judging by comparing the manuals, I only have the functionally identical GBD-100 and GBX-100). If I had to pick a watch to depend on on treks and such, this would be the one I'd consider if I had the budget for it.
I’m team rangeman (specifically the blackout model) and it’s negative display is very cool to see at a glance, but not so easy to use. If you set the backlight to 3secs….it’s THE BEST DISPLAY in the dark using the light. But alas I want a new mudman very much so and I don’t like the color combo offerings currently from Casio. I WANT a tactical black with negative display but it’s not offered that way. Your video however, has convinced me the regular display in tactical black is the best as it offers a color discrepancy in the dual layers of the display. Very cool. Or…..I wait for some more offerings to arrive. The rangeman was so popular Casio made several special editions and color ways. Hopefully over time Casio does exactly that with this model. For now that tactical black will have to do me.
I really like the design. I bought the watch with a positive display and like you mention in the video. It’s a lot better. For me the watch is a Rangeman with a much bigger digital display and with the positive display in tactical black a much easier to read display. I’m not bothered about Bluetooth. I also think the alarm is louder. Ie I can hear it unlike my Rangeman watches
Great easy to watch review, I have just ordered the military green version & did have concerns about the not so great comments about the negative display but the green one just called to me & I don't know about others but I so often find my 1st choice in something is usually the one I end up choosing anyway. Besides that a few of my other watches have negative displays & I have had no problem with them as I spend a lot of time outdoors, this is a pretty big outlay for me so I hope I got it right.
Having both positive this Mudman and Rangeman I can say that the Rangeman is more user-friendly, I am a bit disappointed with screen being too shallow.
Hope I am missing something, dose this record other info like temp and time or is it just the altitude that it records. I love the rangeman as it records this and also the stopwatch an be instantly started with the bottom right button. Great for starting before plunging into water then recording the time and temp for later.
I received my watch this past week. The display is terrible. This video makes it seem far better than it actually is. Even under natural light indoors under natural light, it is really difficult to read. What's the point of a watch that has a dial that is difficult to read? I returned mine and will likely go for the 9500-1. Not as cool as the green, but I don't want to have to fight the negative display to read the time.
cool design cool feature.. one question is : did recent g shock watches has superb durability like their 90's 2000's models. mine, like gw200, dw9900 definitely still rocks over decades... 👍
Yep I agree , can't stand negative display, I have several different watches and I wear my 15 dollar Walmart watch with large grey digital display, has a nice back light. I wonder why these and other expensive watches can't understand that not being able to see the screen is a problem, dang I was excited at first, I was looking the day before at digital display watches like Casio. I have a green mudmaster, the most fancy one, with solar charging and atomic time, I wore it day and night for 6 months. So since I bought the 15 dollar Walmart watch I wear it in the shower and bath, work in it, and it still looks good, the fancy mudmaster had that small digital negative screen at bottom of dial, I never could see it, so the coolness wore off, so when I seen commercial for digital mudmaster I was excited, oh well what's with that weird compass lines, hum
Hi TD, i have read that the legibility of the positive display is poor when viewing inside. Some say you can hear the alarms, others (and in my experience)say they are inaudible. Any comments please. It's a shame that you don't seem to answer many questions.
I noticed 2 things with this new Mudman. 1. This watch has Multiband6 , but it is not printed on the face of the watch. 2. This watch doesn't have the more traditional Casio screws holding the back plate on , combination phillip and slot screws. It's phillip head screws only.
On G shock you can set the sea level pressure manually like on Garmin or Suunto? On those watches are altimeter mode and barometer mode. I don't need the altimeter all the time. The watch is locked in barometer mode and all changes in pressure will be considered due to weather and changes in ambient pressure. This mode is best used for activities without a lot of elevation changes.
i have Casio AE-1000W , i am using it from past 13 years and still its in good condition, i have changed its battery just once, i have purchased it in 2010.😉
UTC display doesn’t show the seconds? Can you confirm this? most of us would use this display for accuracy of measurements or synchronization of other instruments. This seems like a big miss.
Casio/G-Shock are not exactly known for value propositions. Basic functions with small iterative improvements split between varying models. They're more likely to release 20 new colours at inexplicable prices than improve their screen legibility. They've found a sweet spot between getting you to buy the thing for its fashion but then 'upgrade' because it's missing something like a screen that can actually help you read the time.
I have a gbd-h2000 model that has marvelous mip negative display, but the negative display at new mudman is a comlete disaster 😢. I would prefer rescue orange with positive disp. 🤔
i have always loved the Robust and strength this watch is showing out and always have popped out of so many watches... besides all the Glory of the G chock brand, this glossy reflection could be solved with a Gorilla Round Matt Screen Protector that is easy to attach and removed in different variations witch of course also protects the life span of your screen... i am not sure if its so glossy for the solar panel that is integrated so i don't know if this Matt Screen Protector would have negative effect on the solar panel. But hey its better to read of off the screen in hard conditions rather having a hard time reading of the screen... some situations you can not allow a lag of that what you rely on and in this case what G shock stand for is all the information on this Bad boy to be clear when you reading the information you need. Matt Screen protector could solve this issue Regards,
Thank the lord no mip as clear but slow pixels ... and that negative display awful ... best is the black positive display beautiful.. i still have a GW 9300 and honestly its brilliant 5 years ongoing
Matte/black screws in the case would, IMHO, speak even more of an inconspicuous watch. What's the point if the display is "tactical"/difficult to read, but the metal of the screws sparkles like a Christmas tree from 2 miles away? 😉
It's truly a great tool watch, but as I've suspected, Casio negative displays are an absolute catastrophe. I don't know how they're not aware of that. Or they just don't give an eff, because they're probably selling them like cupcakes.
@@fran2911 Casio has a few models with MIP negative displays. Those are pretty ok. I dunno why they don't put them on all other models. Maybe because they demand more battery power...or something else? I really can't tell.
I have protrek solar and 12 years the battery is like new. the buttons like new . The starp is silicon so like new . The case like new. PRW 3000. Also have the newer stainless dial version fir 7 years Same thing . Both are like new. Casio solar batteries are really really durable ling life.
liked everything except the display and the thermometer, negative displays despite the large real-estate it' hard to read. The positive display is washed out, sigh
Can't personally understand why Casio chose to go this way🤷♂️ Why didn't they harness the MIP-display for this🤯 Would have been a killer watch🙄 Perhaps they are thinking about GW-9600 Rangeman🤔
Does the "Army Green" really look that dark....? I'm kind of disappointed, if it was the green they used for the GW-9400-3, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
can you expalin what diffrence between this men and masters Fisherman Raysman Wademan Gaussman Lungman Antman Rangeman Gravitymaster Gulfmaster Rangeman
Why oh why are are G-Shocks so difficult to read. My aging eyesight isn't so good and so many of the watches, analogue or digital are a dissapointment. I have a GA B2100 Yellow Casioak, that's great, would be better if the digital display was a little bit bigger though!😂
This negative display sucks like most of the negative displays from Casio. The green doesn’t seam to have the same striking impact of other green offerings from Casio. This might be the fact the green is a little off colour or the fact that there is too much of it. It’s the black version that stands out for me
My beloved wife give me this watch as a give coz I'm a hardcore angler so this watch suit me in all weather condition and outdoor love the orange colour
Takecare not to scratch the mineral glass - cost me almost £60 to send it back for a new whole front. Customer service did not care that I had already paid big money to get the watch. I was just doing some gardening. Took almost 6 weeks to get my watch back. I will make sure that the glass face is Sapphire glasss in the future,....Disappointed to say the leasts!
In terms of software this gets absolutely wrecked by the garmin instinct 2x, it's not even close. The only reason to pick this over the Garmin is the looks or if you don't care that much about broader features in sports tracking
Negative display in watches are nuisense.casio taking money for their watches and we fail to see the time when we user really needed it .down with casio .even auto light does not work if it is not super dark .😢
