This is a tutorial on how to fly a Procedural RNAV approach using the G1000 to LNAV minimums on the Cessna 172 G1000 in Microsoft Flight Simulator (FS2020).
The approach used in this tutorial is the RNAV GPS Runway 12 into Stuart Witham Field (KSUA)
The weather is set so that we will hopefully become visual with the runway on the Minimums for the approach!

Great video, thank you! Just one thing, in my opinion, it just helps more and gives more information to your audience/students if you fly with clear skies in the sim when making a tutorial. We saw a beautiful fog 40% of the screen for so much time and could have no sense or idea about the environment. Even if this obviously can happen during a real flight, when you learn RNAV the first time... You understand me. :)

WT (Asobo marketplace freeware) G1000nxi, permits your waypoint entries to be typed from your computer keyboard. It also has full VNav capability. It will auto select Glidepath when established. Available on Cessna G1000, the 62,40 and the ST22. It seems to work nicely, even in its current beta state.

@davidh7280
@davidh7280 3 года назад
@@Taylair usually the case! You could always do a follow up video using the nxi. I like how it auto switches to GP from VNav without you having to cancel VNav. The accuracy is superior to the Asobo ILS, with very accurate GS. Version 2 is out with airway function added to the flight plan function. You can almost let it autoland!😉

is the vnav lnav approach the same procedure?
@Taylair
@Taylair Год назад
This was LNAV only, to use LNAV/VNAV, you would need to be using a system which gives you vertical guidance from an on board VNAV system, at the time, this wasn't included in the sim. You'll notice that I managed the descent purely from the step downs on the plate and had not vertical guidance on the flight displays.

Thanks for sharing. Well done. Seems I learn something all the time. I learned two things from you in this video: setting baro mins from the TIMR/REF window ( I always set it when setting up the approach) and another way to use FLC ( I always pressed the FLC, then UP UP UP a few times which reduces the airspeed for the climb, then powered up.)

Hi Taylair! I have a Problem with the set up. My GPS is always in the enroute Phase although Im still on ground. How can I change that to the Terminal Mode for example And when do you active your approach?
@Taylair
@Taylair 2 года назад
The change from ENR to Terminal and APR mode should happen automatically, however it doesn't happen on this G1000 version as you will see in the video. Maybe the new G1000 NXi version does it, I haven't checked yet. Only activate the approach when you are cleared to or ready to navigate directly to the IAF to commence the approach procedure.

@Taylair

Thanks for your comment! Loading the approach will attach it to the end of your flight plan. Activating the approach will navigate you to the selected Initial Approach Fix to begin the approach.

Great video, thanks for posting. What devices/equipment would be needed in a 172 to automatically set way point altitude and speed limits to match once reached? if the 172 can not do this what GA planes can?
@Taylair
@Taylair 2 года назад
Hey, yeah I think the G1000 NXi download has working VNAV which will hit altitude constraints. I haven’t tested it yet as I tend to concentrate on more manual methods. Speeds would need auto throttle which you won’t find on any prop aircraft I know of and most light jets don’t do that for you either.

Great video. IRL would this require an Instrument rating to conduct an RNAV approach?
@Taylair
@Taylair 3 года назад
To do one on an IFR flight plan in instrument conditions you would need an IR. There’s not anything stopping you requesting this VFR though for practice or finding one at an uncontrolled airport and doing it there in visual conditions.

At the 5:00 mark, what determines if you enter into the hold at PETNE rather than making the turn and proceeding directly to MAINR? Does ATC make that call to adjust for inbound heavy traffic? Any clarification would be appreciated.
@Taylair
@Taylair Год назад
If you have a look at the leg between HADAT and PETNE, you will see it has NoPT written on that part. The hold at PETNE is a hold in lieu of procedure turn, used for course reversal to come back to the final approach from a non desirable angle. NoPT means No Procedure Turn, so the hold is not required in this case. If that wasn't there, we would have to do the hold entry prior to continuing the approach.

@Taylair
@Taylair 2 года назад
You'll see above the Altitude tape, I have selected 2000 ft using the Altitude selector knob. When the current altitude approaches the selected altitude, the system detects this and changes the mode to capture the 2000ft selected to level off.

I trust you are not dismayed or discouraged by that unfortunate exchange I read just through. Hopefully just a little ‘one too many’ barking by an otherwise good guy. My perspective, to borrow an FS airplane term, your videos are “study level”. That’s rare (I have watched hundreds). I expect your channel will grow on what you have to offer from a professionalism and knowledge perspective. A small suggestions, for what it’s worth. Zoom in a little closer to the PFD.
@Taylair

Many thanks for your comment! Yes, I was pretty disappointed with that comment but as it was not founded in any knowledge or expertise, I can only assume it came from a place of jealousy or bitterness that probably has very little to do with the content of the video and more to do with the insecurities of the poster... Welcome to the internet! I do however appreciate constructive criticism and will attempt get a clearer view of the PFD in the future.

@@Taylair Thank you for responding. I am glad to hear you plan to continue your efforts to produce knowledge based tutorials for those learning to fly in MSFS. You asked for suggestions so I am going to offer some thoughts. I have limited real flight experience (just 100 hours) and I am old enough to have been a purchaser of the original Flight Simulator in1982. My thoughts, which are based on the prerequisite of understanding the basics of, and being able to control, an airplane and understanding the basic flight instruments. I.e., flying a 172 under VFR conditions: Ok, taking it from there is where your videos come in, I.e. learning instrument and then IFR flying so, what topics? (1) Using the G1000 to navigate. From creating and entering a flight plan to an in instrument landing, The G1000 topics in between are many. (2) ATC communications. A daunting topic for many (including me). Highly structured and unforgiving, ATC (VATSIM in MSFS) is something only an experienced pilot can teach. Hopefully you can figure a way to present ATC instruction in a series of videos. (3) finally the hardest part of all. Both (1) and (2) at the same time in real time. CitationMax does a great job of showing us flight simmers how fast it comes at a single pilot. Perhaps you can break it down for us. Sorry for the long winded comments. Experienced pilots willing to put the effort into MSFS tutorials are critical to the community. Thank you.
@Taylair
@Taylair 2 года назад
Thanks for all this feedback! It's really useful. I do have an idea regarding ATC instructions which I'm hoping to start with very soon, it is going to be a little time consuming to create, but do keep an eye out for it to eventually appear. I'll have to put in some work to learn the Citation, but hopefully when the PMDG 737 arrives, I will be able to show some of your suggestions in that!

Repeating what Steve says. Being a youtuber, I found no matter how hard you try to put out some professional, free service such as a tutorial, there will always be those one or two spoiled entitled youths who get frustrated not being able to immediately find what they are looking for, and for free. So, hidden behind their keyboard they just become so insulting and angry. That brat should probably get back to his Fortnite buddies. I completely understood the title of the extent of this VNAV demonstration, thank you for your efforts and I look forward to more of your shared knowledge!

@Taylair 3 года назад
Ok, so think about what you are actually doing here. You are telling a qualified experienced pilot that he didn’t fly an RNAV approach. That’s quite funny. What you wanted was an RNAV LPV approach which my video description tells you this isn’t what is shown and my commentary in the video explains that I couldn’t show for this approach and therefore flew the RNAV approach to LNAV minimums (which is still an RNAV Approach!) as this was requested from a subscriber. If you’d have posted a question in a polite and respectful way, I would have gladly helped you out but unfortunately you chose to go a different route.

@@Taylair Well mister expert, qualified, experienced pilot dude. Yea I'm not a pilot, just someone trying to learn the sim. Most YT videos that talk about RNAV approaches are showing how to use the automated approach feature. Now they all may be incorrect in the terminology that they use but it doesn't matter as those are the common terms that are used by us unwashed, stupid, noob flight msfs flight simmers. Correct terminology or not you are not doing a lot of us any favors here.
@Taylair
@Taylair 3 года назад
Well the video has a 99.6% like/dislike ratio and explains in the description and early on in the video exactly what will be shown. If you weren’t so angry you would actually realize that you learned something new here about RNAV approaches. Not all RNAV approaches have LPV guidance and now, if you come across one that doesn’t, you know what to do. Like I said, you could have just asked a question and made a positive exchange out of this and you would have got your answer without giving off a negative impression of yourself. It’s a shame.
