In this video we will go over how to plan a flight in Microsoft Simulator 2020 and use VNAV constraints to help the Garmin G1000 NXi autopilot how to know when to descend and hit that waypoint perfectly every time! We take off from Bellingham WA and take a short flight over to Victoria BC using Live Weather.

Finally,someone who doesn’t leave out details, after a few failures I find that most don't show important settings! Now I can get back to work. ILS landings were no problem, but I do have difficulty with this VNAV flight thanks!

As a super novice MSFS pilot, I've been wondering how to use the Garmin for anything other than seeing whatever default information it throws at me, i've found this immensely helpful. I don't know a whole lot about flight save from what I've learned in the first few tutorials of mnfs2020, and xplane, and tooling around places working on takeoffs, descents, and trying to maintain altitude manually. You've really helped me understand how some of this equipment works in the plane. Thanks much!

thank you. A clear explanation of VNAV at last. Spent too long with the old 1000 gps that didn't have VNAV modelled so have been ignoring it for too long.

Remembering to move the altitude selector "out of the way" of the VNAV/vpath causes me so many overflights of runways. :D

Great tutorial. Very helpful indeed. I tried to follow along. But needs practice :-) One question, I missed the TOD for one of the transitions and was way high at that transition. I could not get the VNAV to descend even after lowering the altitude to the next transition point. How do you go about recovering this situation? I managed to do it be getting down to 2100ft using VS. Then the VNAV weas happy again. Perhaps that is the way it is designed.
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
Glad it helped! Yes, you caught up correctly. Once you miss your point you need to descend a little quicker to get down. I haven't done it in a while but once you recalculate it you should be able to turn back on VNAV and it will lock on again. Think of it like a slope and you just need to be under/behind it to have it "grab" it.
@Photoshopmanipulator
@Photoshopmanipulator Год назад
Excellent show I enjoyed your video , can vnav use for step climbing or is it for only descending . how do you feel about the Honda jet
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
Generally no. In some airliners will be able to follow SID constraints but piston aircraft that are slower will not. The reason is for safety. If something was set wrong or the constraints call for a steep climb it could potentially stall less powerful aircraft. For climbing the best way is to use FLC mode and set your speed for the climb that way as you climb and performance decreases the aircraft would only ever be able to level off if it didn’t have enough power at your FLC speed.
@mikepapahotel
@mikepapahotel Год назад
Thank you! 😊👍🏻 One question if I may - is there any reason to not use your lowest altitude (BOD) from the start - then allow VNAV to handle all the level changes while you manage the throttle? Not having to enter each (lower) level in advance would be one less thing that could be forgotten. I enjoy your work! 👌🏻
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
Technically, I think it would work. I have not tried it though. IRL I think this would be a safety issue to protect yourself from continuing a descent if something went on with the AP or if the constraints were incorrect. Try it out and let me know! Thanks for watching!

Awesome and clear tutorials that's for sure. However, I set up the vnav profile as shown but the magenta altitude beside the teal altitude on main screen does not show. I'm on the ground when I set this up if it helps. What's wrong? Do I need to be in the air?
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations 2 месяца назад
No need to be in the air. Are you using the same charts as in the video or others? Usually if there is no altitude assignments on the arrival then you will not have anything populate. If you give me your route I can see if I can replicate it to see if I spot an issue. Hard to know without more details or seeing your flow. Quick summary would be: Enter in departure and arrival airports Add any enroute waypoints Load and arrival or/and an approach Look at the arrival/approach in the Garmin to see your altitudes that match the chart you planned your flight from. Take off and fly like in the video. Remember vnav is only for descending. To access/climb use either VS or preferably FLC for the specific aircraft you are in.
@aaditjohn6903
@aaditjohn6903 2 месяца назад
Mine is a completely different route. Mine is from WSSL/21 - USR01 (Custom) (2000ft) - USR02 (Custom) (2000ft)- RNAV 02R - WSSS/02R Of course, I keyed in this data how you would in the Garmin 1000 and altitude in brackets are the "restrictions" I set Also, I now realise what happened. I need to be at the waypoint or be within range of the decent waypoint before the altitude restriction goes lower for the magenta altitude (target altitude) to show. It seems everything was done correctly all along

Sometimes when I load low altitude ifr and select rnav approach in the ready to fly screen, ATC doesn't recognize it (tries to force a high alt) and my VFR map doesn't connect last waypoint to beginning of approach. Thoughts? Thanks so much for vids!
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations 8 месяцев назад
Most likely the altitude assignments for that approach are above where you are cruising. The world map does all sorts of stupid things when loading procedures. This is because you are not able to select transitions. IRL, typically, you would file just your way points/route with out any procedures as ATC will be the one to give you those. Unfortunately ATC is dumb as well and still might tell you to climb if you’re below the approach procedure. There is a lot to get into with airspace/altitude restrictions though so low IFR flights are tricky. For the best chance of success I would plan your flight without an approach in the world map. Make sure to put your desired altitude in. (If it’s too low ATC will still make you climb higher). Once you’re in the cockpit look through your Garmin to make sure it all looks correct. You can also load in the approach you THINK Atc will give you or wait until they do. If you see any weirdness in the flight plan like MANSEQ way points, that is Manual Sequence and usually means that you would be flying between those way points with either instructions or by what is written on the specific approach. You can just delete the way point and it will connect. I would always check through the approach chart to see if it has any unique notes. Hope that helps.

I think you nailed it. I often fly local to my area, which is sometimes Dulles, BWI, New York, etc, but I take off at tiny airports. I'm probably flying below the initial approach altitudes!!!! Dang. I am going to see whether this will help. I'm going to be finishing my ground course I bought, using sheppard air questions too, then doing the IFR, and then finally I'll hook up with an instructor and join the local flying club. They want $100/mo plus rental (wet) at $125. So to offset the ongoing $100 flying member cost I want to be way ahead on my learning/tests. I know the all-in cost, and I'm prepared, but I also don't want to go into this ill-prepared too. Thanks for your time, and have an amazing day!!!@@sprocketsimulations

i followed my own flight plan using your tutorial what i would like to know is if a pilot needs to initiate a go around is it possible to pick up the glide path again using the autopilot. can you do a tutorial on how to acheive this?.
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
Yes absolutely possible. Before landing you would have your heading mode set to the runway heading and your altitude to the go around level. If you need to initiate a go around you would go to full throttle and retract flaps accordingly. Turning autopilot back on will fly you out on runway heading and to desired altitude. Each airport has their own procedures but essentially just fly back to to the start of the approach and go back to Approach mode on your autopilot and it will capture just as before.

How did you bypass using the world map to enter your flight plan in MSFS 2020? X-Plane allows users to manually enter a FPL. However, as far as I have been able to determine, MSFS 2020 forces users to use the flight planner in the world map.
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
I almost never use the world map. Doesn’t force you at all. If you select an airport, or parking spot and then press fly you are good to go. No flight plan needed at all in the world map.

Hi! I need help! When I set the BUICK's altitude, it doens't update the DAXET's. I can't activate the VNAV, despite it's enabled and set in altitude. I even reinstalled the game, but the issue remains! (when I start the flight plan, the "ENBL VNV" is already set) Can you help me??
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
I’m not sure I quite follow, before reaching DAXET make sure to have the altitude constraint at or above. If you want set your altitude to 2100ft before the TOD and then click VNAV while your still at 6000ft. Make sure to enable VNAV on your autopilot before the TOD. It will not start to descend until then and also take you all the way to the approach. You then will just hit the Approach button when established on the localizer and it will capture the GS to take you down to the runway. Make sure your CDI is on GPS.
@theman1860
@theman1860 Год назад
After entering the flight plan and activating autopilot and then NAV mode, the autopilot follows the flight path for the first leg. After that when it enters FINAL it stops following the flight path. Also the VNAV doesn't work (when I turn it on, it turns itself off right away)
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
Remember to always have your altitude preset on your auto pilot at or below when using vnav. When entering the approach you need to swap from NAV to approach mode to have it follow the glide path to the runway. Make sure if it is an ILS to have this tuned and your garmin showing vloc. If you have a RNAV approach use GPS mode on the garmin. Checkout SkyVector for charts.

When ILS and when VNAV ? In reality ATC may give you vectors and all your preplanning is in vain. Am I right ? ❤
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Месяц назад
No your planning will be even more important as you would most likely be predicting what the active runway is going to be before you even take off. They would probably give you vectors but it would be to a point on the approach to cut it shorter and help them maintain traffic. So again the planning is important because you would just hit the direct to button to the way point that they tell you. If they give you RNAV vs ILS they are very similar and it takes really on two clicks and a spin of the knob to swap it. You can usually find this out ahead of time as well by listening to their ATIS. The more you have in the garmin the faster and easier your approach is going to be and let you stay focused. Truth is that you wouldn’t be flying this entire approach in something like this slow Cessna. Depending on airspace and weather you would either have clearance from a controller who has already given you directions and altitudes or if it is uncontrolled and good weather you would just contact the tower when you are maybe 10 miles out and they would just tell you to join at a certain leg such as downwind or base. If the weather is bad you might have to follow this entire approach and if it is a busy airport. If there are airliners lining up to go in and out the controllers are using SIDs and STARS as well as approaches for multiple runways. Flying a little plane like this into there is going to be a nightmare. For everyone.
@timharris7425
@timharris7425 Год назад
Also when I setup a flight plan and load it, it makes a god awful mess of a flight plan that the gps cant even follow
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Год назад
Some flight plans will do this if you are selecting a STAR (arrival) or SID (departure) that doesn't match your direction of travel. Also, some are just messy due to airline arrival procedures. I would recommend trying to keep them as simple as possible with a couple way points and loading only an approach for smaller aircraft.
