Good day Ray, great to see you again on another interesting video. These ex-military hardware had been build - literally - like a 'tank' and possibly were used inside army vehicles, or perhaps even planes? It's always a challenge to work out what's what but, the good side of it is, it keeps our older guys brain working looking for answers. Once upon a time, you could get old ex army sets (similar to this), from disposal stores but now they have become a rare find. 73 s from "down under'" VK2xxx (Arthur)

Very interesting receiver Ray. Thank you for sharing the manual via your web page. I see R60 from AGC line feeding G1 of V1 (rf amp). I suspect that this problem is also related to the AGC as you had in the IF strip. Looks like there are THREE valves (V8, V10, V11) that all have diodes in them. You'll get this one working perfectly I'm certain. Looking forward to the follow-up video on this receiver. "Keep calm and solder on." 73 OM

Fantastic interesting informative video as always Ray. In Liverpool where I live there was an electronics shop called Super Radio, I was always in there as a young lad back in the late 60's early 70's, my mum and dad bought me an R107 for Christmas in 1969 but I notice at the time they had lot's of R2O9 receivers in stock for sale and they still had some for sale up until they closed down for re-development of the town center (bad move) in about 1975, I would of loved to have had one of those at the time but never did get one, keep up the good work. Looks like it was built like a tank Ray a very nice looking radio indeed with a rather unusual design. The nearest I got to working with old military radio's, was in the 70s when I was an SWL, with a CR100 and PYE 62 set on Top Band and on that not to mention band lol! Always nice to see this old gear, thanks for putting together this interesting video Ray!

@@g4nsj OK Ray about the 62 set. I also have a CR100 from my SWL days, but it's not in working condition now. It would be a real mission trying to get it working now, with the old valves and it's weight. I used it a lot on Top Band in the good old days, great for AM and loved the way it tuned around the band. Audio quality was great as well on a big speaker. This was state of the art in 1951. Curious how IF AGC seems to be derived from output stage audio level instead of detected carrier level. I guess that has advantages when listening through phones. SSB sounds fine through CW mode & BFO. If there's no XTAL filter the IF will be carefully staggertuned. I wouldn't replace the selenium rectifier if it's working fine, they are much quieter than silicon too. I guess for plug in modules there are extender adaptors if want to probe while live. The RF front end, if it really is meant to amplify and not just isolate the antenna, is it because a tuned RF preselector isn't set right?
@g4nsj
@g4nsj Месяц назад
Yes, it really was state of the art. The new valve has arrived and the RF stage is working well, it’s come to life! I’ve realigned the front end so the IF stages will be next.
@jagmarc
@jagmarc Месяц назад
@@g4nsj With that increase in gain it must be tempting to also try out each the IF slug screws and see how much more gain there is. Many people would switch to FM no antenna and peak each for maximum speaker noise wrongly thinking 'more is better' as if that's a good thing. A nice flattish top response SSB crystal filter has a cleverly staggered alignment and has an intentional insertion loss.
@g4nsj
@g4nsj Месяц назад
@@jagmarc I will do the IF alignment at some stage with a signal generator. I don't think the IFs are staggered. More coming soon...
@jagmarc
@jagmarc Месяц назад
@@g4nsj If the radio is destined to be used with a converter (for NBFM 70 cm or 2m etc) the IF strip inherently good stopband for rejection adjacent co-channel strong signal, prevents the pesky capture effect obliterating. Being as it's already FM gives you a head start. With the cheap nasty ceramic filter based IF suffering from this the trick was to insert a mechanical filter so they complement each others deficiency.
@raysrants
@raysrants Месяц назад
@@jagmarc I definitely won’t be using it with a converter! I’ll be using it for what it was designed for.
