wow David..I'm glad I sent that radio to you, cause I would have given up trying to fix that! Congrats.....You now probably have the only RCA Victor 26BP radio in Australia! !😎 Great job getting that to work. That metal-cased resistor is called a Candohm. They are a flat sheet (phenolic?), wrapped with resistance wire then wrapped with an insulator, something like fish paper. That then has the metal case bent around it. They fail often. Either the wire corrodes or the insulator breaks down. Here in this part of the US, they are usually bad as the high humidity kills them. That did not look bad so up to you if you want to replace. Nice work as always.
@DavidTipton101

Hi Buzz and David, nice change of pace with the "Buzz & Dave Show" format! David, if you feel like diving in deeper, those 2 IF transformers need to be taken apart and the two 56pF caps replaced. As one of the many cost savings upgrades that went in over the years, the internal capacitors in these transformers use a simple sheet of mica that is painted with silver paint on both sides to yield a capacitor. Over time, the silver paint evaporates or corrodes away, causing decreased capacitance and lower Que. If new caps are installed, the transformer tuning will center up and gain will probably increase at least another 10 dB. With the RF amplifier stage, this radio should have excellent sensitivity when it is all tuned up.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 29 дней назад
Hello Bill, I'm a great fan of Buzz's videos. That is interesting, I did consider dismantling the IF transformers but they did tune in and stay in adjustable range so I didn't mess with them. I wish I had now to see if the capacitors were the culprit after what you have told me. Thank you 🙂
@billharris6886
@billharris6886 28 дней назад
@@DavidTipton101 Yes Buzz has the most unique restoration videos. The first time I saw one of his videos, all his theatrics gave me the impression it wasn't serious. However, after seeing a few more of his videos, I was "blown away" by the severe problems he will tackle. Buzz likes it that way so it won't be so boring to watch. So, you get the obnoxious gnome and soundbites, 1930's background music, and the Buzz cinema as a bonus to keep things lively. Those IF transformers have very fine wire, making them fragile so, take your time if you decide to take one apart. I recommend replacing the caps with NP0 ceramics or dipped mica caps. If you have the space, it is easier to mount the new caps to the external transformer leads, versus installing the caps within the transformer.

Hello David, so nice to find your video this morning. Grabbed a coffee and settled in. Those battery sets with the TRF front end are usually pretty good performers. They do however often have a little residual hum on AC due to the valves having directly heated cathodes. (The filament is the cathode) and running them on AC allows the filament to "modulate" the tube slightly. Instructions for these sets sometimes advised to try "reversing the plug", however running on your Isolation transformer removes any neutral reference. (likely wouldn't matter anyway) It also means that on battery operation these sets are "instant on". And in your example, it shows a 9 volt "A" battery which tells me the filaments are in series on battery and the string will draw 50 milliamps. Therefore "A" battery life will be pretty reasonable. Would be fun to see it on battery. Six "C" cells would give good performance for the filaments, and ten 9 volts batteries would be fine for the 90 volt "B" battery. Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on the rest of the set. Cheers, V
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 29 дней назад
Hi Vern, nice of you to drop in. I agree, the performance on this set was very good, I could tell it had the extra tuning stage. Thank you, I figured the AC affected the directly heated cathodes, it did it in the Vidor AC/battery set I did a few weeks ago as well and other sets with those tubes. I think it said to try reversing it in the instructions inside the set. I do have a set of 9 volt batteries here, I didn't think to try it on battery 🙄 Cheers!

I am on the edge of my chair to find out what you have done to the cabinet, it looks like a dino ! For now, great work on the performance ! FYI, the last period I found myself in reading about alignments, as a broad interest, lacking it from my early times, but I learned something that I have not seen mentioning on youtube. The tracking of the antenna circuit with the oscillator can theoretically never be done exactly because of the different frequencies (IF), only by approximation (unless the tuning cap is specially designed for it). By that, in text and on forums I read most often that the aligning (tracking) of the antenna circuit can be done best at about 20% from the top of the band, so around 1400 kHz. That would give the most benefit all over the band. Not all write this, but many do, and only when the manual says different it is not done that way. You have the experience, I not so much, but it is what I red.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 27 дней назад
Thanks Erik. The local oscillator and the Radio Frequency are mixed together before the IF stage so I'm not sure what you mean there Erik. Getting the antenna and oscillator capacitors to track perfectly is tricky. The capacitors are trimmed by bending out the outer plate of the tuning capacitors to approximate the similar tracking through the tuning range, this is done at the factory. It looks to me that the upper trimming point is determined by the tuning range of the receiver. A receiver with an upper range of 1500 KHz is trimmed at 1400KHz, 1600 KHZ at 1500 KHz etc. This set tuned up to 1700KHz I think so the trimming point was 1600 KHz. It's a good point you raise Erik, thank you 👍🙂

@@DavidTipton101 Thanks David. To make my IF point clearer, the antenna circuit needs to be tuned at the real received frequency, say 1000 kHz, but the local oscillator needs to run there at 1455 kHz, the difference >becomes< the IF. To keep those two tracking equally seems to be the challenge, because the benefit of a tuned antenna circuit is different along the band. Setting the antenna circuit tuned at 20% of the full range from the top of the band was advertised as the most benefit over the whole range. Maybe let the thoughts sink in, I could be looking at another circuit, the super heterodyne is probably different from a TRF receiver (that third gang), the TRF term I just learned today from you, I had to search for it

G'day Dave. Could not agree more, there is one country out there who has no choices. He has PUT them IN an awful position. To be honest, we've always been LABOUR, and always will be. But even then, we are more than happy to listen to another Parties point of view. Enough Politics rubbish, far too serious. Live each day as it comes. Hug your mum, or your dad You only get one of each. Hug your kids, and grand kids. And whenever you can, Drop your tools, get outside and have a barbie with family and mates. And have much beer too. At 50 Hz line/mains frequency, the filtering is going to be only 5/6 as effective as at 60 Hz for a given filter capacitance. So there will be more hum, but not that terribly much more. There used to be areas in Canada which used 25 Hz line frequency which required relatively large transformers, inductors, and capacitors compared with 60 Hz line. Perhaps the bass response of your shop speaker is also "helping" the hum; small tube powered audio amplifiers often used speakers whose low end (-3db) response was around 100-150 Hz, diminishing hum because the speakers did not reproduce its frequency efficiently.
@DavidTipton101

I wanted to ask a question about this radio, does it have a locked tune? At this time it was common, because of World War II, for there to be blockages in the transmission of short waves from certain radios, such as the official German government radios, and that on the other hand, radios from England, the Soviet Union and the United States had various interferences caused by radio signals. blockades of German radio stations. That's why I ask because many radios were manufactured with prohibited tunes, that is, a certain frequency that was used by German radios were simply not tuned, in the same way that German radios had their tunes blocked only for official government radios. And since this radio is from 1941, I assume it may have some factory "lock". Is this true?
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 29 дней назад
Hello Carlos, I haven't heard of that feature in the sense you have described. This radio has full range tunning from about 550 to 16 or 1700 KHz 🙂
@carlosandino821
@carlosandino821 28 дней назад
@@DavidTipton101 Okay, so it's a classic medium wave reception radio. I can say that this type was one of the most popular along with shortwave reception radios.

Of course it carries a trademark that RCA should *NEVER* have been allowed to use, *EMI's "His Master's Voice" trademark* which, in 1929 EMI's forerunner, The Gramophone Company of England should've withdrawn The Victor Talking Machine Company's licence *BEFORE* Victor could pass the HMV trademark to RCA. Victor *DID NOT OWN, NOR DID IT HAVE SHARES* in the trademark. Victor was merely a "licenced user", and ironically, the German company that had originally established The Gramophone Co. in England, DGG(Deutscher Grammophon Gesellshaft), post WW1, was reduced to being a mere licenced user after losing its 50% share of the trademark in the wash-up of WW1. The only things RCA had legitimate right to purchase were the "Victor" name and the factory building in Camden, New Jersey.

Thanks alpcns. It works and sounds good. The resistor is a Candohm type, wire wrapped between insulation layers and a metal sheet over the top. That was pointed out in another comment, I didn't make the connection in the video because we don't see them here although a few US radios I did had them🙂
