Before colonial occupation, the Zande people who live in South Sudan, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic used to have kings and princes. For over a century they have lived without. On 9 February 2022, the South Sudanese Zande reinstated a kingdom in Yambio, with His Majesty Atoroba Peni Rikito Gbudue as their king. But what does this reinstatement mean for the other ethnic groups in South Sudan? Does it signal a return to the days of King Gbudue, famed for his military power? Or is this a new and more peaceful version of the Kingdom?
In his poem 'Ga Azande Kindo', South Sudanese anthropologist Isaac Hillary grapples with these questions and shares his views. The footage was filmed in Yambio, South Sudan, and in Uganda by Isaac and Cosmas Sebit. It was edited in The Netherlands by Isaac and Bruno Braak.
