3:40 actually, as a pilot myself... Comparing the drop you experienced with a pothole is probably the very best analogy you could find. What is a pothole? The surface you ride on suddently disappears from under your wheels. In a plane, your wings basically ride on the air. If you pass through a low pressure pocket, your wings experiences less support, and you start "falling". The low pressure pocket is basically a pothole in the air.

How often does it occur? And is it planned before takeoff or do you just know about it when you hit it?

@@richardpatterson4976 well there are meteorological data services that can help identifying low pressure pockets, but this is more for bigger regions rather than small pressure drops like that. These you just hit, it's no big deal, you probably experienced some if you flew on an airline. In extreme cases they can be quite violent. They can know in advance that some areas will be more bumpy, but they can't SEE an actual "bump" coming. Meteorological phenomena affecting airplanes are countless. This is a very complex field in which I am no expert.

@@turmat01 Okay, I was just curious. I only flew 4 times in my life and I know that is very few, lol. But thank you regardless for taking it seriously. That phenomenon was actually one of the major reasons I used to be hesitant flying.

@@richardpatterson4976 My pleasure man! Pilots live for that stuff, we love explaining these things and trying to transmit our passion to others! I'm a glider pilot myself. I've flown powered planes a couple times, but never as THE pilot, just as a passenger, and got handed controls for a while. I do fly gliders though. Weather phenomenas is our gas. The more you understand weather, the better glider pilot you become. I am still new to this, I only have about 25-30 hours of flight, I'd have to go tally up my logbook... If you dare crossing the street, don't worry about flying. Statistically, crossing the street is a LOT more dangerous than taking a plane ;)

I’ve been on a plane ride where we had to go through a thunderstorm it got a bit sketchy and a kid in the back starts hurling. The way you feel about plane rides though you need to watch the movie Airplane!. It’s a parody movie & it’s freaking hilarious.

Piloting those big airliners is like 90% automated these days. The pilots are just there to make sure nothing goes wrong.

100% The only times pilots will take over from autopilot is when nothing is going on and they are bored. They will ESPECIALY not disengage it when things go bad. An autopilot is far more capable at adjusting for bad visibility, turbulence and the like than human beings are.

This makes me think back when I was in the military...we would fly to the field (on hueys) and the pilots would always ask, ' who never rode in a helicopter?' Some new guy would always end up raising his hand. Then the pilot would drop the collective and we would free-fall about 100 feet. Everyone's stomach would be up where we were a moment before. Always at least one losing their lunch on these trips.

Gabriel's name is very similar just say "E" before it! If you aren't familiar with that game it's said like this. Pilots dont fly the planes. Computers do, pilots just make sure everything is working and adjust problems. I would call them the "Emergency Control Systems" hahaha

Yeah, I think most of what they do is the takeoff and landing. Between that, they might take over for a bit if there's a storm just so there's not too much turbulence, but it's mostly autopilot yeah

My husband n I have been married for 40 yrs- I’ve gone 120mph in a car with him, gone target shooting with him & his friends- and outshot them all, and gone on hill climbs and mud Big racing with him in his Monster truck. No problem. But he WILL NOT Ride in a plane, come hello high water! Thought he was the only one like that! I was ROTFL !👍

A plane dropping 50 ft out of the sky ain't nothing!!🤪 It's when the plane drops 250 ft and when it stops, A woman falls out of the women's bathroom with her girdle around her ankles and you have 30 or more children on the flight all turned around looking to see what everyone is laughing hysterically about!!! My husband is a pilot It’s a family thing. As a younger man flying air shows. He was flying with a few friends and had auto pilot set and FELL ASLEEP ! They didn’t wake till the plane was in a steep turn around the beacon. Fell asleep. You never know what’s happening in the cockpit. Just sayin.

Modern day pilots don't fly the planes. They take them up to the target-altitude, then the autopilot is engaged and the computers take over, assisted by ground-control. Unless something unexpected happens, the pilots are on a break until it's time to take the plane down again - but doing their taxes. . .? Nah, don't think so.
