This movie is hilarious. I especially love the gag, that the commands Dave gives to his minions, combined with their names form celebrity names. Dave overall is a really funny villain, and the Penguins are as loveable as ever, especially Private, who had a pretty good arc.
O rewatched The Penguins movie eating for this reaction. I completely forgot about that until my second view. His puns were also amazing, it cracked me up the whole time.
I grew up watching not only the Madagascar films, but also The Penguins of Madagascar tv show when was like 10-12 (they were always my favorite) so when I found out they were getting their own movie, 15 year old me went thru the roof. Plus by the time the film came out, I was watching a lot of Sherlock, so Benedict Cumberbatch being part of the cast only made it better.
in an Interview; Benedict (sorry can't spell his last name)who plays the wolf had trouble saying Penguins for a documentary and he didn't know he was saying it wrong until he saw the documentary. so not sure if this film was before or after it.😁
The penguins and King Julien were always my favourites as a child, also the scene of Dave‘s commands combined with his minions names forming celebrity names is so genius to me. Just imagine the writers in their room coming up with that
I loved that tv series. King Julien was a top tier character in it. And the zoo wasn't as sad and small as it is in the movies. I guess it had a higher CGI budget than the movies.
I think there's a King Julien spin off as well, a short series or something but the penguins movie is a great addition to the overall franchise as well
not short at all, over 4 seasons i believe and a second show that you have to watch in between (all hail king julian: exiled). and i genuinely find it hilarious, loved it as much as younger me loved the penguins of madagascar series
From the Dreamworks franchises, the one left for you to see is the Kung Fu Panda movies. Shrek, Madagascar and How You Train Your Dragon are all seen and done
Honestly, while this movie is alright ,I do think this movie also showed that much of the staying power of the Penguins came from the fact that they had little screentime, but all of it was used to maximum effect to make them as outlandish and competent as possible. I also don't envy the writers for this movie and the show (which is great btw) as they had to take relatuvely simple characters and give them struggles and developement that doesn't undo or contradict how they acted in the Madagascar trilogy with mixed results. Like how this movie establishes that they left Antarctica of their own volition, making their initial motivation in the first movie kind of backwards.
I would argue on the subject of the Penguins getting “little screen time.” In the first Madagascar film, yes; they did have little time to shine on screen. However in the second and third films, they had a fair amount imo especially in Europe’s Most Wanted. My theory of them getting a feature-length film is how popular they got among the fans with the films and the TV series.
@@SpacialRend7 yes, but their screentime was still minor in comparison to Alex and the gang, not to mention that they were comic relief and ,while arguibly the best part, they weren't the thing carrying the movie's plot. That's a whole different beast. And them getting a movie was really not suprising. Dreamworks has a history of capitalising on their successes. ( Legends of Awesomeness, Riders of Berk, Race to the Edge etc)
@@filipvadas7602 I think the problem is more with them being the focus is that as side characters they could literally be portrayed as an unstoppable force of nature but as main characters they need struggles. In the original trilogy they were plot devised with very fun side stories but overall their only real purpose story wise was to help the main characters get from place to place. TLDR: The penguins are amazing side characters that doesn’t really work as main characters.
@@filipvadas7602 Sorry, didn’t read the response to SpacialRend7 where you further explained your point and I missed that you indeed had already stated most of what I commented.
One weird thing, it's established in the Madagascar movies that humans cannot understand animals. So the octopus actually learned how to talk so humans could understand him if he's a renowned scientist
not them putting nicholas cage in here in a joke when he said nicholas, cage them...damn how did i not notice all of these references to actors and actresses when i first saw this movie!?
I thought the same way you did about writers and creators getting a little too invested in extras. But this was funny and fun, I can see it wasn't just a quick buck of fan favorites they really cared. I gotta find this and see it in full, so fun! Cheetos, those hard knots are so delicious. And I'mma be real with you, I don't like puffs for two reasons. 1. They got nothing on crunchy Cheetos and 2. As a kid I thought they looked like caterpillars, and spent ten years being terrified of the idea of eating one and it crawling over my tongue in a sudden fear attack 😂
Classified: Your not an elite force, your just penguins! Skipper: Who stole the Medusa serum? Classified: .....you. Skipper: Who found out dave's name and appearance before meeting you? Classified: .......yours. Private: Who specifically thought Dave was a sheep. Classified: ........me. Skipper: Who would've caught up to private if you didn't stop us with your grappler? Classified: You.
Not enough people react or review this movie; I saw a video review of it when it came out, but nothing since then. I honestly think this is a movie that adults would laugh at more than kids, because of all the celebrity name jokes, the spy satire, the self aware humor . Most kids in the theater I was at were looking at the adults wondering why they were laughing The joke for me that kills me is the Lederhosen and accordian. For me it just begged questions; why was this the distraction that Classified came up with? Is it something to do with octopi or is that the only costume they had? Why was it a costume that they had?
I also loved this movie more than the others. I cried when Skipper acnolaged private at the end. Private is my favourite of all the Madagascar characters. You guys should watch the penguins of Madagascar series also just as great.
Honestly liked the movie for the most part but the ending didn't really do it for me and compared to the other madagascar villains I felt like Dave was just kinda weird and boring
2:10 Yeah Nobu is right about the Adélie Penguins (those are the species of penguins for this whole movie). They are very curious and don’t have much regard from their safety. Also they have very aggressive mating seasons. Lots of penguins end up hurt or dead including some chicks. If your curios just google it or watch RU-vid the descriptions are quite graphic.
Funfact: Planes do have normaly Wipers for real , but they mostly don´t use them because it didn´t work so high up in the air^^ It has a horn too, because of the birds xD
King Louie is from the Jungle Book. Penguins have leopard seals, orcas, skuas and petrels and even occasionally each other. I like this movie too, never seen the show tho, wanted to but never had cable
Nicholas Cage, Drew Barrymore, Hugh Jackman, and one more reference you may have missed, when Skipper shouts: "Parker Posey" that's an actual reference to actress Parker Posey, who, for me was known to play Jennifer Jolie in Wes Craven's Scream 3.
Dreamworks really showed how to do a spin-off properly (suck it Cars 2). They fleshed out the penguins well, while adding a solid character arc with Skipper & Private. Plus like Madagascar 3 has some amazing cinematography, the action scenes are so interesting, with long shots and utilising every aspect of the characters. Dreamworks fully embrace the physicality of their characters, like having the penguins slide around and all the squishy movements of Dave. Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your Dragon also show this off well with its action. It's always fun watching you guys react because you really acknowledge these animated elements more than most. Also fyi there's a hilarious bit on The Graham Norton show, where Benedict Cumberbatch is faced with the reality he can't say the word penguin properly, he did a nature documentary that features penguins and his pronunciation is hilarious. I haven't seen Puss in Boots 2 yet (it's coming to UK cinemas in just a few days), but I've heard it's great, so I'm excited to see how the action is there. (bit torn about them changing the style when the first one & the Shrek films had its own style already).
This movie was an absolute disappointment. The Penguins deserve better than this. The TV show is way better, in fact I would go as far as say that it's better than all the movies.
I love the Penguins they're my favorite. Skipper's the leader of the penguins Kowalski is the brains Rico can be Kaboom and got things out of him Private is the cute one put the team back together and saved the penguins Skipper Kowalski Rico and Private are the bravest agents and great heroes in the Madagascar movies and series. And that Skipper Kowalski and Rico raised Private ever since he was hatched. They're a team and Skipper is their Skipper.
@E N Oh, right! I know them well, but I didn't know Rico's the muscle. I guess I haven't known it, but thank you for that. So Skipper is the leader. Kowalski is the brains. Rico is the muscle. And Private is the heart.
i watched this movie only once in the cinema and watching your reaction now felt like remembering a fever dream lmao at the very least i remembered laughing a lot watching it back then so honestly great to now know that the humor holds up
I love this movie it's so funny !! And the animation is amazing I loved your analysis at the end of how they did the action sequences and the animation of the movie overall that was so interesting !!
Also, Fort Knox still houses $6.3 billion in gold at 147.3 million ounces of the mineral. None was moved. It is only removed to check for quality periodically.
The opening narrator is Wernher Herzog, a real life documentarian and actor. I believe the opening is paying tribute to his documentary Encounters at the End of the World, which has a section about penguins leaving behind their flock. he is regarded as one of the greatest documentarians in the modern age. He prefers to not be a fly on the wall and capture true emotion.
When ever you guys get finished with DreamWorks movies, please oh please check out some animated movies from the studio Cartoon Saloon. Such as the Breadwinner also Wolfwalkers , Song of the Sea , and the secret of Kells. To name a few, really there movies are so good and deal with some pretty heavy also mature themes sometimes. Also please check out more indie animated movies like Mary & Max is which by far one of the best mature adult animated movies out there.
I'm so glad you guys gave this film a watch. It's incredibly underrated in my opinion. I love The Penguins of Madagascar! I adore this movie and TV series. And who else wants Dreamworks to make a North Wind movie?? By the way, I believe the reason its called the Medusa Serum is because in Greek mythology, Medusa was once a beautiful woman who pissed off the gods and thus was turned into the snake-haired monster we all know her as. I don't know the full story but that's basically the gist.
