Absolutely, the big takeaway is that competition is is so important. iPhone wouldnt be as good as it is without android, and android wouldnt be good without iPhone. I have used and loved both, currently entranched in the Apple ecosystem.
I think RE27 has a more pronounced low-end response, which can give vocals a more authoritative sound. This is something that MKBHD's voice benefits from, as he has a deep, resonant voice.
RE27 has much more clarity and doesn't sound as muffled, makes me wonder what the others would sound like with it too edit: just unpaused and heard andrew with it lol
I want more AUDIO MAN EXPLAINS! I'm into exactly that type of audio stuff and that quick mic test was really cool to hear, definately a good call sticking with your classic silver mic
The RE27 has noticeably more upper-highs, sometimes called “air”. Typically the 8k+ Hz. The Shure definitely has a taper on the high end. Personally, I prefer the RE 27.
I think with CMF, Carl is doing a repeat of what Nord line did to OnePlus. They are cheap more accessible, sells more in countries like India which is one of the biggest market for Nothing. They do want to increase their market share in India so CMF does sounds like a good idea. And what better product then smartwatch to start with. India is the biggest market for smartwatches we have 30% market share of all sales of smartwatch. You think 4400 rupees is cheap? We have smartwatches starting from Rs.1000 which roughly translates to $12. And most smartwatches sold in India about 85-90% are in $12-$60 range. Actually they really are not smartwatch they don't have wearOS. And most of them are just a rebranded cheap Chinese made smartband which has form factor of smartwatch. So if CMF comes up with some cool design and some decent sensors/app/tracking, they can just fire up the market. And won't CMF will launch a phone? Is this even a question?... Absolutely Yes!!! That's what the main plan is(think Nord).
The RE27 has a more pushed top end and the neodymium magnet in the capsule makes it a good bit more sensitive than the shure. (It’s also twice the price) The sm7 is a flatter/more neutral response which will out of the box suit a wider range voices with a little EQ. The more sculpted RE27 when it pairs with the right voice will sound amazing from the get go. Marques and the RE27 work together perfectly but I’m pretty sure a good mic pre and EQ could get similar results from the Sm7.
About the CMF smart watch, there is a huge market for fitness bands posing as smartwatches in that price range in India, like a lot. So they are strategically targeting Asian market to establish CMF.
Andrew’s assumption about Wifi calling not working because it’s not whitelisted is probably true. I can tell you from experience you should always check with your carrier if the device will work. Most of the time international models won’t work because of the difference in cellular frequencies other countries use versus us. Also be very careful with AT&T cause I’ve heard of reports of people having their accounts closed for using devices not whitelisted. Just saying! Great episode!
I was happily enjoying this podcast until @ 9:19 I noticed a line on my tab S9 Ultra only to realise that the camera pointing at the producer has got some issue 😂. Thanks for freaking me out for a moment @team MKBHD
the section on CMF kinda makes me think about how cool it would be if you guys did a series comparing the “cheap” versions of things (like budget wireless earbuds) and their much more premium options
i definitely prefer Marquez on the RE27 mic, but somehow there was such a small difference for Andrew? and of course there was no difference for David, i mean none whatsoever
24:30 In my opinion Nothing is just capitalizing on the "smartwatch" boom in India (although they are all just glorified smartbands) by making a watch which looks very similar to many that are in the $15 to $40 range. Also the fact that the leak had the indian price means that it probably won't even launch in the US and the only reason it is even making such buzz is because their association with Nothing. Just take a look at the recent smartwatch selling figures in India and it'll explain the whole situation
"Audio man explains" sounds like a brilliant section. Either a section of the podcast, or a series on The Studio channel. I wanna know why those mics sound so different! And the RE27 for Marques should stay.
4500 rupees for a smartwatch is quite normal here in India. We have great options from FireBoltt, Boult, Noise and few other brands in 2000-6000 rupees range. however, bear in mind, these ones are not wearOS compatible. Just few workout modes and calculator built-in. that's it.
I am in and out of the hospital a lot with my disability. The PS Portal is going to be just awesome for me. No, hospital WiFi isn't always the best but if I was using it for Stadia with no issues, I am sure this will be fine, too. Being stuck in a hospital room in bed by yourself with nothing but your phone and the 30 or so cable TV channels that come through the crappy TV on the wall makes for a miserable experience. I'm super looking forward to the PS Portal. I wish they'd have just made a new PlayStation Portable that can download and run actual games on the device but this is the next best thing. I have considered a Steam Deck but it's expensive and my Steam library is nowhere near as good as my PlayStation library. And remote play on my phone with PS5 has been awful. The app works fine but it really depends on the phone and connection. The controllers lag sometimes. It's just an unreliable experience.
I have an Honor Band 5 that cost me around $25, and I have been using it for over 2.5 year now. Clearly, it's fitness band rather than a watch, but it's more than enough for my use-case, which is step counting, occasional heart rate & SpO2 monitoring, notifications from phone and alarm/timers etc. I will definitely consider the CMF watch if it comes around that price ($55). Something like Apple Watch Ultra or Garmin Forerunner are in a whole different league. But from my perspective, for most regular people, excluding reasons of vanity, a fitness band is sufficient.
Yes But CMF's watch is nothing but a Fitness band in the shape of a smartwatch. A Smartwatch needs to be able to run apps other than the pre loaded ones, there should be a store where you can download the apps etc. Watch 4 in India costs 100$, easily defeats all Smartwatches in the segment. This being released around 55$ doesn't sit well with me.
I think Marques sounds a bit better with the new SM7B but the current mic is clearer and unique. But then, it is probably because I have gotten used to the sound of the current mic.
Honestly, if they had changed the mic without telling anyone, I don't think I would have noticed. I sure wouldn't have felt that something was "bad" with the sound.
@@supertrexandroidx Exactly, but if you are someone who pays attention to sound quality, you will notice the change in Marques's voice with the new mic.
I'm partial to the SM7B as that's my mic. Of course, you can EQ any mic to give it the tone and timbre you're looking for. Though if I had more money, I'd probably use the RE20. It has a much more natural frequency response than the RE27, which tends to color the higher frequencies a bit. They are all fantastic dynamic mics though, and I'd use any one of them.
Pegatron is actually Apple's supplier and is making iPhones. I would love to be a fly in the room and see the Apple's initial reaction to the name. Do you think they also laughed or thought it was a cool name? 😂
I am a regular follower of MKBHD and his channels from India.. 1st time I found the teams view too naive when nothing watch was discussed. When prices are mentioned in Rupees it's clear they aren't focussing on US Market, the discussion should have been about cheaper smart watches in other markets. You guys missed the point I feel.
I only just got WIFI calling on my Pixel 6 pro in the last couple months. I'm in UK and with Tesco mobile. It's definitely down to the carrier, also Tesco didn't sell any pixels until a while after the pixel 7 came out.
I actually don‘t get why people loved the Zenfones size so much. An iPhone is about one millimeter taller and 3,5 millimeters wider but also a millimeter and a half thinner. So, I gotta confess that i never held a Zenfone in my hand. But everytime I hear someone talking about it I ask myself „do these few millimeters actually make this much of a difference?“. I get the argument around the iPhone Mini because it actually had a meaningful difference in size compared to a „normal“ iPhone. But like, the Zenfone appears to be pretty much the same size as an iPhone. Or am i missing something?
Thankfully Asus isn't ending the Zenfone series, PS portable sucks, CMF watch pro looks like w̶i̶s̶h̶ Temu apple watch ultra, Google can't keep secrets, and detailed studio map on fortnite.
44:05 This was getting announced while a lot of games journalists were at Gamescom and all they were talking about was if they had this with them at Gamescom, they couldn’t play using their hotel WiFi 😅
I think David was on point with what Nothing is trying to do with CMF. I think Carl realizes the potential of markets like India and is thinking of the leveraging the consumers in this market. The Indian market is full of chinese white-labeled smartwatches from 20-50USD. There are other categories like Earphones, etc. which are also just white-labeled stuff. In a price sensitive market like India people will buy these things just for the novelty of it. There are plenty of brands making big money by doing this. From what I feel Carl is trying to do with CMF is that he will make a better 'skinned' version of the more generic stuff and charge a bit of premium over them. This way he can differentiate from the rest of the market, which mostly consists of brands who rely of celebrity advertising. He can stand out in the pool of generic stuff with his brand which has a 'story'.
On the smart watch bracket, if you go to markets from India and also somewhat in the Asia Martet, there are way cheap smart watch. Companies like Boat, Oppo, Vivo, Firebolt and few others aims to cater audience who can't really afford costly smart watch but they still do a good job so that anyone and everyone could start using the smart watch, good wireless earphones and sometimes they do tend to have similar design to costly watches. But for the price they sell, it is just amazing how they work.
With Watch 4 coming in below 9k, more people are able to get true smartwatch, though many who are buying smartwatches in 4-5k segment are just going for the looks.
In regard to smartwatches... Per my father's request a year or two ago, I bought my mother a "smartwatch", but I knew that it was going to collect dust and not be used so I did my dad a favor and just bought a cheap Fitbit Ace 2 perhaps? I can't recall.. Moral of the story is... I was correct in the dust collecting so I think there is also something to mention in terms of the "gifting-verse" because those of us that aren't in this "world" probably think a smartwatch's only functionality is a pedometer... To add my 2 cents, I still think smartwatches are a little silly in 2023... But I hope in a few years time they will offer functionality that is actually valuable to more people...
SM7B is not that great of a mic and you can see how the RE27 crushes it. People generally d*ckride the SM7B because of Joe Rogan. You need a cloud lifter to even use the SM7B , the proximity aspect sucks ass
