Another great demonstration of your ingenuity and creativity with the hscope. One thing I’d like to add is the rear tire speed. On your truck it might be watching the abs speed sensors to display speed but most Fords will read the ring gear speed. Most other manufacturers will read the transmission output. When clamping the one wheel the speed of the wheel on the other side will double because of the way the spider gears work in the rear differential so the true speed of the wheel that is spinning will be double the speedometer. It looks like you got the vibration handled either way and now you can enjoy a vibration free truck. Thank you for sharing.
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist 3 года назад
It's an old truck and speedometer is not from wheel sensors but from driveshaft speed and sure enough by clamping one side the balance wheel was turning twice as fast as indicated! I swear I measured 80ms between 360º marks (60000/80=750RPM) as a "reality check" but in reviewing my waveforms it was closer to 40ms for 1 rev which meant that tire was rotating closer to 1500RPM I got caught! Thanks for pointing it out Chad:)

would be same principle on FWD...share some of the weight off the passenger side axle (which is the side I'd recommend as you want clockwise rotation) to allow the ADXL to "oscillate" ALSO...disable traction control if equiped.

Denis, I tried your method and it worked great! I used it on a 1998 Expedition which is similar to your F-150 and like you I was able to get the balance better than the shop did and that is no exaggeration so thank you for this. I have looked everywhere for DIY spin balancing and the only other video I saw was titled "How wheel balancing was done in the 1960's. That was a neat old machine he used but impossible to find now of course. Judging by the amount of interest there is about balancing tires you would think there would be more content out there about DIY spin balancing but this is the only video I could find. My setup was not wireless like yours but no matter. I used a picoscope 2204a instead of H-scope but the concept is the same. For anyone who wants to try this method, I was able to get to around 30 milli g's of accelerations from the ADXL335 when balanced. You stated you had around 70 milli g's of accelerations and could feel it. I can confirm that I also could feel it at those levels. I just finished checking my wheel alignment by following your #66 through #69 videos with a $40 laser and it worked great. Keep up the good work!

Is it possible that the balance done at the shop actually balanced the wheel and tire correctly, but you had some imbalance in the drivetrain like the axle/rotors? When you put the tires back on were you indexing it the same on the axle each time? Be interesting to see the tire/wheel rotated +/- 144 degrees (since you have a 5 lug setup) before changing weights to see if that had an impact. Kinda like indexing a brake rotor on a hub to fix axial runout.
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist 3 года назад
no vibration spinning rotor without a wheel on it...and tire never went back on exactly on same studs position... you'll notice the 2 weights from the shop are at same spot on both side of the wheel...and exactly opposite to the weights I put on... raise your vehicle wheel off the ground and spin it @ 90kph and see what your shop balanced wheel feels like...you'd be surprised

@@theGADGETSplaylist Good info. I might invest in making this because there are so many possibilities. I would use this for bandsaw wheels, tires, even electric motor armatures. Im in the middle of a possible rewind on a 100 + year old Century Electric repulsion start induction run motor restoration and there is a short in the armature, so I might be rewinding the massive 75 lbs+ armature. Actually how I came across your channel was looking up ways to do dynamic balancing at home.

Isn't your dynamic weight placement countering some of the installers static weight. Would just removing 3/4oz of the static weight be the same as adding weight to the location you placed it?
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist 3 года назад
yes, his weight is directly opposite my weight and removing it would have brought the tire closer to balance. I went in thinking that I'd not disturb the shop's work to keep things simple and to also not muddy up the application of the waveform data to the wheel in this demo. Lots going on during a video production like this, single handedly... You do bring up a good point...good eye, Dan:)

just going to point this out, you did a really really high speed balance on that tyre. Atleast as far as i know you blocked 1 wheel, that means the other wheel turned 2 times as fast, so you balanced it at 180km/h. That might be why it felt so rough in the car, and why it sounded kind of rough as wel.
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist 2 года назад
yes, am aware...brought to my attention by Chad @ ThePracticalMechanic who also caught it. no matter, tire was rough from the shop and now smooth at 180 kph and 90 kph I appreciate you watched and paid enough interest to spot it Bob:)

I'm building a balancer using an ADXL335 accelerometer, a 5V voltage regulator, and an IR photo sensor, couple resistors, total cost about 30$ CDN. I don't have an oscilloscope so I bought a Hantek PC based 2 channel oscilloscope off Amazon for 90$ CDN. I want to use it to balance my car wheels AND my airplane's propeller (there's a prop balancer called a Dynavibe, costs $1500, and does exactly the same thing). I get good results for car wheels using a horizontal axle on bearings static balancer but I'll see how this works. There is an alternate method that does away with position detection and only requires the accelerometer with an output in MM/S. You mark the wheel at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock, install a reference weight, say 2 oz, at 12, spin it, note the velocity, repeat with the weight at 4 and 8 o'clock. Enter the ref weight value and velocities at the 3 clock positions into a phone app (ADASH has one), and it tells you the precise weight and location to use to centre the wheel's CofG.

@theGADGETSplaylist 8 месяцев назад
VERY COOL! I'd be interested in how you make out with your balancer and with plane prop balancing. Consider joining HScope Telegram group if you're up for that, where such things are easier to share and discuss. Am familiar with Dynavibe. I toyed with plane prop balancing on that LSA that I featured here last summer. It has a ROTAX 80HP so I was dealing with 2 frequencies (engine + prop). We're also dealing with sunshine making IR (or laser as I was using) hard to get REF. And, vibration levels were above the ±4G limit of the accelerometer I was using. Will likely pursue this further next summer.

The one thing I noticed. Having done dynamic balancing on vehicles professionally. You should put the wheel back on exactly as it came off. You are balancing all the rotating masses. Typically, in the shop, we would not have to do that.

nice job. only one question. Did you just leave on the clipped weight we saw that was nearly opposite the weights you added after the first run, or did you actually add them to induce an imbalance you then found and corrected?

not an unbalance that I induced, those clipped weights are from shop balancing at time of tire purchase...shoddy work on their part as proven here I could/should have removed all their weights once found incorrect and balanced tire from scratch...

I think this is great and I'm going to try this out! I just have two questions: 1) could you suspend the vehicle on the pinch welds (say on a quickjack system)? 2) Since this is a single plane dynamic balance, could you also use clip on wheel weights, but split the weight on both sides of the rim? For example, if it requires 1.00oz, could you take two .5 oz weights and put one on the outside facing rim and the another on the inside facing rim in the same position?
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist 2 года назад
quickjack should be OK from a balancing standpoint...of course your judgement from a safety standpoint... splitting the clip on weights will achieve the single plane goal as well...

Another thought, if you balanced on the front of the car and put a sensor on the front steering knuckle, as far away from the axis of rotation as possible (or like on the tie rod), you could measure "wobble", and therefore might be able to do dynamic balancing. One sensor could measure up and down vibration, and the other would measure wobble. EDIT: When I say dynamic balancing I am not talking about just spinning the wheel. I am talking about the type of balancing that tells you whether to put the weight on the inside or outside of the rim. The terminology is confusing, but in the world of tire balancing, this is the term they chose.
@theGADGETSplaylist
@theGADGETSplaylist Год назад
the term is 2 plane overhung rotor requiring a static/couple solution...the inside weight is referred to as the couple, the outside weight is referred to as the static single plane balancing for tire widths

I host my work on my Google Drive. Martin's work, including the firmware is hosted on his GitHUB and you'll find a link to it in the video description box. There is ongoing work on this HS-ACC platform ... the digital ADXL345 used here is more noisy than the analog ADXL335 used in the other project. What made things worse for a while is that there was a glitch in the HScope software filters that could clean up the waveform. Filters have now been restored and Martin is exploring if ADXL345 raw waveform can be made less noisy. I'm also collaborating with Martin on a new project based on analog ADXL337, no estimate on a release date at this time.

1:24 .... man, there is a lot of rust on those brake calipers, or crud on them... 🤔 Why is 90 km/h the sweet spot? Why isn't it 100 km/h or some other figure that is closer to the Highway speeds? I live in Kapuskasing, Canada. Long winters with lots of salt on our roads. Rust a major problem! I chose 90 KPH because that is our highway speed up here. Not that important. And by mistake, tire was actually not turning 90 KPH in the video... By locking the left rear wheel, the right rear wheel was spinning 2x faster than speedometer was indicating. A mistake made in the heat of video production, lots going on. It had no effect on the final balance results.
