I would have thought gain staging would be in reference to the levels throughout his mix and sound design process. Not the routing.

Yeah this isn't gain staging, this is routing
@bromo6900
@bromo6900 5 лет назад
Yeah I'd like to understand that a bit too, Ahee, if you have a minute. Simply adding these all up is not necessarily the magic. Afterward, what levels do you set your channel, utility gain (though doesn't look like you use that much), gain on each effect, each limiter, etc - so that over the course of the signal routing, you still get a clean and clear signal at the right level at the very end? And maybe a bit on WHY you would turn this up and that down along the way? I would be surprised if the answer was unity gain on everything.... Nice videos BTW, not dissing above, just asking for more more moooore!

It is in reference to his levels, and shows how he groups different elements of the song to different premasters, plus he can add effects and whatever to whole groups of sounds, like drums, sub, melody , rhythm vocals, fx. It is sound design in a way, layering and mixing your sound to fill all the space available, I love mixing and mastering, thanks AHee, for this tutorial bruh! ✌🏽

Im going to modify my existing mixer setup (fl studio user here) to model this and see how it works out. All my mix busses are purely grouped according to the instruments, but it never occured to me to take it a step further and create end groups based on the structure of the song. But dividing the limiting across multiple mix busses makes a lot of sense. Thats really the main takeaway here. Thanks for showcasing this tip!

So essentially Fx - Premaster then to master Kick and snare - Premaster to master Top drums - premaster to master Sub - Hype chain to premaster and then to master Vocals - Master Drop - basic chain to chain group and then premaster to master Melodic - basic chain to chain group and then premaster to master Both chains go to chain group and then premaster to master

Why do you have to send the Basic Chain and Hype Chain to a Chain Group if they are already grouped under "Chains"? If you route the "Chains" group to "Premaster," I assume you wouldn't need another bus called "Chain Group." Is that correct?

I personally don't use return tracks, I find them annoying as they take up so much screen space. You can achieve the same results by routing to audio tracks like in this video. But if you want to use them just turn up the lil wheel on the right hand side of the track or if you're unfamiliar there are loads of YT vids just look up "How to use Return Tracks". Cheers

Really what we need to see is how to use the premaster chains not just how to route them. Also, abletons thread processing is routing dependent AFAIK. Track groups are locked to single thread and I think that output routing to an audio track might have the same effect. Routing the majority of a session to a single input monitored audio track may cause a major bottle neck for lower powered rigs.
@LordShongo
@LordShongo 4 года назад
Super interesting comment and something I hadn’t really thought of or considered...I believe you’re correct in assuming that any audio tracks that share routing are sharing the same thread (just like a group). But apparently this applies also to tracks that are dependent on each other through side-chaining, as well as send/return tracks (which makes my head explode) because in theory then, if you have 10 tracks in a project that are all side-chained to the kick, then they must all be sharing a single thread then too...🤔 Very interesting line of questioning I would love to get to the bottom of! I can tell you from my own personal experiences though, as someone who has for at least 10 years now, been using a work flow similar to the one described in the video (routing multiple audio tracks [for instance, all the drums] into one audio track [renamed “Drum Bus”], then applying fx/compression/limiting on that “Drum Bus”, then further routing these various busses into other subsequent audio tracks [busses] *aka “pre-masters” etc.) I haven’t noticed any bottlenecking that I could specifically tie to this style of routing. Though maybe because there are so many variables causing tracks to be dependent on one another, as a result creating multiple threads rather than locking them all to just one?? I’ve no idea lol Thanks for breaking my brain though!! 🤪
