About the "weird arragements" skrillex is doing music with a musician mindset, and not like a DJ thinking in 4/8/16 bars to mix a breakdown into a buildup in a dj set

I think the key in simple/minimalistic tracks is defining a really strong main element and making it either evolve over time, or "fill the mix" (imo every element should have a purpose and not just be thrown as filler) with really subtle elements that complement the sonic picture of the chosen main element

2 steps for good music: 1. keep it simple 2. MAKE IT DYNAMIC AF this is what space laces, skrillex, noisia and many more do for their iconic beats

I also think part of the 5 parts to 3 parts trick in "Supersonic" has to do with subverting your listeners' expectations. It really makes that 2nd drop hit harder when it feels earlier. He does this a couple more times in the album like on "Inhale Exhale"

Especially the part about mono vocals is interesting imo. It somehow evokes the feeling of a limited production from the beginnings of electronic music, assuming you only have a handful of tracks to use. The priority is not the voice but the basses and sounds around it, so it gets less attention by only having a mono instead of a stereo channel dedicated for it. Reminds me of the old school dubstep or UK Garage stuff, Burial for example. As if you used a file sharing app to download a crappy mono rip of a CD of which you sampled the vocals. But without the crappy compression. tl;dr: nostalgia

@danielvousden565

At the moment, I've actually started making all my music in mono (using a stereo imager and reducing the width). I'll change back to stereo every now and then to see how it's shaping up, but it helps me to focus on tone and song structure, instead of the exact placement of sounds. The mono mixing of vocals also helps with radio play. While stereo vox sounds amazing in headphones, radio stations/car stereos/ phone speakers can end up cutting out that end, and just give you mono instead. While most producers just want their music loud, it's better to focus on dynamics, because that's more interesting to the ear. I don't doubt that Skrillex carefully produces with dynamics, but not too much that the mix is ruined. Great vid, man, keep it up :)

You can take the seperation between Vocals and Instrumental a bit further by using a plugin like soothe with sidechaining only the sides of the vocals. So the instrumental ducks down the stereo signal of the vocals in a dynamic way but you still got some stereo signal left which differs from the instrumental.

His simplistic tracks are great because, and I know you don’t wanna hear this, 99% of the time when an edm producer makes it complicated they are sitting at their computers for hours and since they’re listening to the song their making for hours it’s browning and there needs to be more stuff. More stuff gets added and for a person that listened for 3 mins it’s just way too much, too many changes, too many things, and the song gets ruined
@PoboyMusic
@PoboyMusic Год назад
Yeah thats a problem for sure. Thats why its good not to overlisten and make sure you work quickly. If you listen too much it seems stale and you end up adding more stuff.

Also I think it’s good to make minimalistic stuff as well as complex. Complex stuff is important to distinguish your music from typical sounds and happy accidents arise from complexity, it’s like a science experiment. But yeah sometimes you have to know when to scrap an experiment that’s doomed

so it makes sense to use the Utility or the "Tool" in my case to turn the gain up in Bitwig after the compressor or limiter if I want it loud without destroying the dynamics?
@Oversampled
@Oversampled Год назад
Yeah, that's what's called a makeup gain. You first compress the tops and by that make the sound quieter and then boost the gain to bring the volume back, but now it's perceived louder. Some compressors have makeup gains or gain match, like Ozone on the video, although they're not fully accurate

one thing that is very interesting is how low-mid heavy the mixes are. comparing it with his older stuff or dance music in general, Most mixes cut alot of 300-800 hz and are very present in the highs. his approach is quiet the opposite, focusing mostly on the low-mid harmonics and not being overly screechy. Which also gives more room for the few elements that do sit in the high end. Absolute genius
