Amazing Tutorial Demis 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 And I would love to add my 2 cents: 😂😂 1.Never mix with a hot signal and gain stage it from the source , Ex. in any synth their is a master volume put it down so if it goes to an eq or compression or whatever effect the signal is not hot . 2.The digital clipping is above zero and there will be distortion in the sound so we need to keep a head room in our mix by gain staging the channels from the source to -dbs (-18,15,12,10,8) whatever sounds better to you. 3.Mixing is not the final phase of the track but mastering is, so try to finish your mixes around -7dbs so at the mastering phase we can have a decent room to work with. 4.If the mix is so quiet for you and you used to mix loud put a limiter on the master channel crank up the gain on it like 8dbs so you can mix loud but before saving and rendering turn it off. 5.Gain and frequencies are accumulative so gain stage every channel, Track or Bus channel's also cut frequencies that is unneeded. And Gain stage would change after applying effects so always double check.

Thank you very much for this. I’ve been so much confused about gain staging lately. My volume levels are all over the place. I’m going to now incorporate these tips. Thanks again.

This tutorial is the start if I want to make trance with no tutorial and just found my own sound. I say this because always i get smackdown with my dynamics when i try to make this style.

Good advice, truly really helpful. This will help my mixes for sure. I have always known that I should learn more about gain staging. Just regret that I didn't do something about it before now. Take care. :)

Great stuff again Demis, a slight twist on this is I use the PRE section in the Cubase channel Settings EQ tab to achieve the same as the gain VST, the benefit is you can save as a default preset so everytime you add a new track it sets the gain to -18 or -12.

Thank you! This was a massive step I have totally neglected. I had a sense that I’ve wanted to change the character of the sound, not the volume, but didn’t know what a difference it makes.

Thank you for explanation. If i'm correct, it is not necessary to put extra plugin to gain stage, why don't just do it in the rack? Decrease the volume and you have the room. Because from your explanation i understand, that the main reason to gain stage is to keep room for boosting up with compressor, because if it uses hot and overloaded sound and tries to add more to it we en up clipping and squashing.

☺️ This is the video I needed the most without knowing it. Good job, Demis Hellen!

Its a really simple process but the difference in a mix is so clear once you are shown a little context of how it sounds.

@@demishellen agreed. I can do clean mixes without anything distorting or messing up but then some sounds are lacking a punch and the mix sounds too soft. That might improve when I get better in mastering etc.

Hi Demis! I just found your channel and you certainly have a lot of good videos!! But you really don't need to use CPU power on a gain plugin when you can just turn down your pre-gain in Cubase. Or??

This is true , I was using this to visually demonstrate all in the chain. Sometimes in tutorials it easy for someone to see physically the chain in one place. Great point out though as I do not mention this. 😎

No problem Daren, let your creations breathe with gain staging. Its not such a big topic when you have it as part of your everyday workflow.

Hi there I am new to music production, great tutorials but can u please tell me is there a reason why you are not reducing the volume of the VST instrument (on the instrument itself ) to match -6db rather than use a gain plugin or am I missing something? Thank you...
@demishellen
@demishellen 4 года назад
Great question Les, you can for sure reduce the VST volume but for the purpose of consistency in the video I used a gain plugin. The gain plugin used is extremely low on CPU so it makes not difference. However if you are needing space on your insert channels then by all means balance the volume from the vst itself. Hope that helps :)

Tank of water...it works. Thank you this should be something I need to practice, along with getting the bass and kick basics among other things. So if you have good head room going into mastering a track...how would you make it sound louder? Maybe you can do a mastering plugin tutorial or share some tips on mastering and what to look for if you do it yourself.

If you start from now doing this on every track you will have a much cleaner mix when track building.

Instedt of this gain plugin you could level your channel by 6 db right?
@UnfortunatelyTheHunger

Doesn't Spire have an in-built master volume knob? Why not use that instead of a separate gain plugin?
@demishellen
@demishellen 5 лет назад
Yes you can do that, I was demonstrating the use of gain control to better demonstrate how hot a signal can be.

@@demishellenHellen its also important to Adjust The Volume at the very first Source, because most of the Synth Presets in Spire, Sylenth 1 and so on are way to loud or overdriven already, and are distorted already on their Output. itself. So first of all Set The Volume of the Using Synth to -15 dB or -18, of course, it depends on the Sound if the Sound is very Dynamically then you can't achieve exactly the Value .. and then Use the Output Gains on The inserted Plugins aswell. e.g if you add an Eq and add some Boost in Highs or Lows then match the Levels from Input to Output :) > -18db input ->add eq or any other Plugins->adjust the Outputs on each Plugin Instances afterwards..-> Final Output =-18 dB

Big fan of your tutorials and all you do. However I have to say that i found you've made this gain staging video far more complicated than it needed to be. I would have thought you would have concentratedmmore on the gain plugin to acheive an -18dbs or thereabouts by using the gain plugin. and show setting all the faders to zero and better resolution adjustment.
