The problem was Jim was actually a very bad tenor! Mike had to do double parts quite often but of course that's also prob what got him so many solos and his solo deal.

I noticed you said the same thing about Terry Franklin in another video and yet Franklin doubled even Michael's parts on the Peace Of The Rock album and on Sometimes My Feet Wanna Dance on Southern Classics. Jim Murray was evidently past his vocal prime when he joined the Vocal Band but that was common practice in CCM at the time where the lead singer did most of the vocal work in the studio. They weren't really fixated on quartet music back in the 80s and early 90s. English even doubled for Larnelle Harris on a few songs on One X 1. Does that mean Harris is a bad tenor? No! Larnelle was and still is a vocal beast! And Jim Murray was an awesome tenor singer with the Imperials! 20 year run with them and his wonderful tenor voice!
