There was a rumor that the reason Dirk Benedict did the episode was so that he could get back on the Universal lot to retrieve some personal items he had in a backpack that he had left in an old locker in a property room. When BG was initially canceled, he wasn't allowed back on the studio to get it for some reason.

Unfortunately you forgot that Richard Hatch mortgaged his own house to finance a proto pilot to bring back the original Galactica series - hopefully into a feature film. Unfortunately, he died of cancer and nothing came of his efforts despite fans positive response. It was going to be filled with as many original actors as possible and the old timeline.

Ah yes, The Second Coming. I wish I was able to see the trailer but I don't know it was released to the public or not. I know on Richard Hatch's web page they said it couldn't have been released due to SAG guidelines, but that was about 15 years ago.
@HerrEllsworth
@HerrEllsworth 10 месяцев назад
I saw the trailer and it was amazing! Many fx people worked on it for nothing. Hatch had a great reverence for the original series, more so than Glen Larson who emphatically put a stop to the project claiming it was his property and it was not going to be usurped by anyone. It was much the same way seventeen years earlier when Irwin Allen shot down a project co-written by Bill Mumy to reunite the original Lost in Space cast.

In 1980, I was nine years old. I loved “Battlestar Galactica.” While even nine year old me didn’t care much for much for the Super Scouts, even then, Dylan and Troy on flying motorcycles was unquestionably COOL! William Daniels and Wolfman Jack trading barbs with Cylons at a Halloween party-SUPER COOL! I just rewatched it in DVD and to this day, I still have a bit of a soft spot for “Galactica 1980.” As silly as it is, it’s entertaining-and somewhere in there the kernels of a good show that unfortunately got eschewed by an identity crisis.

Great video, thank you! I have more memories of watching Battlestar Galactica on Sunday nights as a child than I do of Galactica 1980 even though I was older and memory retention gets better with age. This was before we had cable and my guess is it is because BG was so much better and Galactica 1980 was so bad that my parents chose to watch something else. I remember my eyes glued to the TV even through the long (2 part) Intro of BG. EPIC theme song! It gave me goosebumps as a kid.

@@mctaguer IF, IF, IF the left Jonathan Winters' character as Mindy's crazy uncle, I think the series could have exploded. Willaims and Winters' comedic timing and improvisation were outstanding, but having Winters recast as Mork and Mindy's child was just stupid and a complete waste. Getting back to Mindy's uncle - the episode where Winters guest starred was fantastic. Watching those two comedic geniuses in the scene where Mindy's Uncle began to hallucinate after eating an Orkin egg was a ten laughs a minute romp.

You forgot to mention that Universal released an edited version of the original pilot into movie theaters with "Sensurround," and Richard Hatch is the one who kept the fan's desires alive shooting a trailer for a possible reboot of the original series.
@davebolter9111
@davebolter9111 3 года назад
Universal was clever to release it early in Canadian movie houses, to swell up support before the eventual ABC premiere. It was then released in Europe and other places simply to recoup the enormous production costs, as well as with Sensurround here in the US. I hate when folks try to compare BSG and SW..; BSG was never intended (nor shot) as a cinema motion picture, only as a television mini-series from the start, hence the abundance of close-up shots on faces, etc. It's like comparing 'How the West was Won' and a classic John Wayne western. It was just presented in movie houses (as mentioned) to stir interest and later to recoup studio costs. What's also interesting was it was only one of FIVE movies ever done in Sensurround. I believe 'Earthquake', 'Midway', and 'Rollercoaster', plus the 'Mission Galactica' telemovie, re-edited for cinema release. I thought Towering Inferno was one, but I was mistaken.
@dragonfly1694
@dragonfly1694 Год назад
@@davebolter9111 yes, 'Conquest Of The Earth' which was the 3rd film in the series (along with 'Battlestar Galactica' & 'Mission Galactica:The Cylon Attack') & the only one not to feature Sensurround. We had proper theatrical releases for them in Australia & I saw all 3, but Sensurround was mostly unavailable in cinemas here as it was an expensive & impractical format as most theatres were multiplex. They even used stock footage from 'Earthquake' in the Cylon invasion of Earth dream sequence, superimposing the Cylon Raiders attacking Caprica from the original 'Saga Of A Star World' pilot over the top. Sensurround was basically the equivalent of 2.1 surround sound by adding a subwoofer for low-end frequencies, & giving a stereo-panning effect for the 35mm mono prints (from 'Midway onward'). It got killed off by the competition when Dolby Stereo went optical. 20th Century Fox developed their own equivalent in Sound360 & also Warner Bros. their own system in Megasound, with both formats faring even worse. Also the quality of the Sensurround films were a lot to be desired with diminishing returns for Universal, 'Rollercoaster' in particular being a massive failure. However there was a limited theatrical release of 'Alien' in some territories with 70mm stereo Sensurround though (same as Earthquake), despite being a Fox film.

Galactica 1980 is a guilty pleasure of mine. While much of it was really bad, some of it was really quite enjoyable. I actually liked the 3-part pilot, although I don't think the time travel plot would've been a good idea for the entire series, but I think it works for the occasional episode, much like Star Trek. Liked the idea of humanoid Cylons and the Cylons landing on Earth, sadly The Night The Cylons Landed 2-part episode was very badly executed. But I liked the concept. And I especially liked the finale The Return of Starbuck.

True, yet Star Trek The Animated Series succeeded in completing the "5 year mission", and was faithful to the original series which only lost one character in Pavel Chekov. Whereas Galactica 1980 failed in every way as it only featured one character returning from the original series in Adama (with limited special guest appearances from Boomer, & Starbuck in the finale). Troy was meant to be Boxy as an adult, but was completely unrecognisable. It's premise turned off fans of the original & it didn't even make it through a single season.

If only they'd waited a bit for Benedict, rewrote the script to Hatch's liking and done the 3-hr TV movie, say 1-2 yrs later (I've since wondered how the hell they got Lorne Green to do this one). I wanted further answers on Count Ebley, the angels et al. Anyway, I question "30 yrs in the future." That would make Boxey almost 40. Moreover, we SAW video of the Apollo Landing in the original. That would make this series 11 years later. Yes, that's too soon (a discrepancy 11 yr old me also recognized right away) but 30? No. They should've called it 1984 or something. Things that drove these decisions make you realize how much LUCK goes into a show being successful.

Barry Van Dyke was later in another ill-fated attempt at reviving a TV series shortly after its unceremonious cancellation, which was Airwolf in 1987. CBS had dropped the show after three seasons in part due to rising costs but also because of the growing problems with its star, Jan Michael Vincent. USA Network soon picked the show up but like Galactica: 1980, it was produced on a significantly lower budget (it was ostensibly, a Canadian production) and with virtually, an entire new cast. Jan Michael Vincent however, appeared in the first episode of Season 4 to help bridge the gap.

The time travel premise for the original TV movie sounds like the one that was later used for 'Quantum Leap'. Oh you mentioned that at the end of the segment 😊 Being set so far into the future caused a huge inconsistency plot-hole in itself with the moon landing transmission in the original series final episode, as it had only been 11 years in reality. Galactica 1980 was woeful, as well as the international theatrical release 'Conquest Of The Earth', edited from the 3 episode pilot with some random scenes featuring Count Baltar from the original series being thrown in for no good reason other than to have a main antagonist villain return. Note it's Count Baltar, or just Baltar. Gaius Baltar is not the same character, that is the equivalent one from the Ron Moore reboot, where he used the given name of Julius Caesar. The biggest mistake was not having 'The Return Of Starbuck' as the pilot but the final episode, but Benedict's availablity most likely prevented this. It would have worked better giving fans some familiarity & closure for a popular major character. Also there was no space action, and the minimal scenes set in space were boring exponential dialogue between Adama & the extremely dislikeable Zee, made worse by Adama playing as his subordinate, not how you remember him. Not to mention the damn super scouts! Yeah the kids killed this show haha Season 2 of Glen A.Larson's other production at the time, 'Buck Rogers In The 25th Century' was also terrible, and made way too many changes due to a lower budget that killed that show off too.

While series stars Kent McCord and Barry Van Dyke are very good actors, they didn't have the chemistry and dramatic punch that Hatch and Benedict had in abundance. Except for the pilot episode and 'The Return of Starbuck ', the episodes of "G1980" didn't have the suspense, action and drama of the original. And while Patrick Stuart played Dr. Z much better than Robbie Rist, the idea of a mere teenager serving as Adama's science advisor rubbed me the wrong way.

I was in highschool when Galactica 80 came out. Yes it was hokey and Prof Zee was an outright joke. The Starbuck episode was the best since it was played straight with a good cast and a strong story. Now I understand why the time travel stuff was done then dropped. It's a wonder they were able to make any coherent storyline out of all the ordered changes. The flying bikes were kinda stupid but cool at the same time. The idea of that the cylons look like us didn't originate in the 2k reboot. No in G80 they did a Halloween episode where the cylons make it to Earth with a human looking Cylon and a Centurion. As again of the OG Galactica and this second series. I was kinda bent out of shape by the bait and switch Moore did with the Celestial Spaceship Trace kept drawing. Too bad too many of the OG cast are gone. I'd have liked to have seen them make it to Earth with the Earth Directorate Starfighters. That would have been a sequence to watch.

I was 8 years old in 1980. I was a huge BSG fan, I had the books, the trading cards, even the toy ships that eventually got recalled because a kid swallowed and choked on one of the little spring-loaded plastic missiles. Even at 8, I was appalled at how corny Galactica 80 was compared to the original. Had it been an original IP, maybe I would have been more forgiving. But I don't know, it was pretty lame.

The only permanent set in "Galactica: 1980" was a dark room with a seat where "Irritating And Wise Boy" sat surrounded by a bunch of TV screens. One of the stupidest parts of this series' moronisms was "the Super Space Kids". They did a good job trying to rescue the series with "The Return of Starbuck", but left him abandoned by Angel Lady and Cy, his repaired Cylon buddy was destroyed leaving him completely alone on some desolate planet. That was depressing.

I was 15 when this came out. Loved the original Galactica, HATED this, especially "Dr. Z" I have a vague and distant memory of an early episode where kids from Galactica were in a classroom on Earth and the teacher was doing some astronomy and showed a picture of the Big Dipper, and one of the Galactica kids said it was backwards and another Galactica kid said "it looks different from the other side." The other side? At 15, I knew enough astronomy to understand exactly how very stupid that comment was. That memory sticks with me but I've never seen anything else bring it up. I don't think I imagined it...
@thudthud5423
@thudthud5423 2 года назад
Technically, that would have only worked if the Galactica came from a vector that passed directly to our solar system through those groups of stars, would they have come to that conclusion. The reason for that is that those stars in that constellation are at different distances from the Earth and would not have looked anything like a Big Dipper if the Galactica came from any other route. A better scene would have been if one of those kids recognized those stars (after coming to Earth) and stood up and said: "No, no. That's not the where those stars are!" then walked up to a chalk board, drawn X,Y,Z axes and started putting the stars in their correct 3D positions. I'm sure that teacher's jaw would have been on the floor when all of the other "Super Scouts" (ugh) agreed with the one that pointed that out. Of course, that would have been way too cerebral for a series that was evidently geared to the 10-year old crowd.

Great review of the entire G80 concept. Few comments though, The original BSG killed the newly-revised 'Archie Bunker's Place' in the early months of Fall 1978, and yes ABC was cocky enough to think the 2nd season of Mork replacing BSG could regain ABC's top standing on Sunday nights in order to prove it didn't need to spend the millions on Galactica, but that idea flopped miserably. Some of the main reasons ABC soured on BSG was 1) the notorious Newsweek review that BSG was nothing more than a SW-rehash (ABC didn't want to hear that, riding high as the Number1 network at the time..), and 2) they didn't like all the merchandising revenue Universal was scooping up, which was essentially ABC's own fault since they contractually didn't invest in the merchandising rights, only the series. The Mattel toyline obviously didn't generate anywhere near the Kenner SW profits, but was doing well with all the other stuff like books, school folders, sleeping bags, etc.

I vividly remember all that "it's a rip-off of Star Wars" blather in the critical media and thinking "Aside from being in space this doesn't remind of Star Wars AT ALL. What are they talking about?" What a load of bunk. Yeah, when you tie that lost opportunity in merchandising to the cost of production (AKA "money") it all makes a lot of sense.
@thudthud5423
@thudthud5423 2 года назад
If I remember right, George Lucas DID sue ABC and, if I remember correctly, he won. Possible reasons for the lawsuit: - The dark haired and blonde main characters being Han Solo and Luke Skywalker ripoff (with the "cocky rogue" vs "serious hero" roles reversed). - The Vipers' paint schemes very similar to those of X-Wings along with possibly the long fuselages. I think, yeah, BSG could very well have been influenced by Star Wars, but it was pretty original as well. As I recall, cartoons and comicbooks also had a lot of CLEAR Star Wars ripoffs. For instance, in one comicbook, a "future" Tony Stark flew around on a large Helicarrier sized spaceship that looked like an X-Wing.

@@thudthud5423 Yeah, now that you mention it, I do recall. I mean, those characters are actually pretty conventional. I simply never thought of Star Wars once when I watched Galactica. I remember my mom mentioning the SW copy thing and thinking, "Huh?"' The entire saga/series style, pacing, direct earth myths and mood were so different. I do remember now Lucas winning that lawsuit, I'm just not really sure WHY (probably better lawyers). Does anyone remember Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? THAT shamelessly copied Galactica in lots of ways...

Please do a review of THE CBS Sci-Fi Comedy IT'S ABOUT TIME (1966). I was 10 when it aired in Australia & it was an instant hit here, sadly cancelled after just 1 season. The only drawback was the ridiculous scripts for 2 astronauts, portrayed as "bumbling boobies", (to steal a line from the great Jonathan Harris). If their scripts had them in more serious roles, it would have been much better. If remakes were able to be as good or better than the originals, it would be worthwhile for this series. Sadly, most remakes are poorly done, with poor scripts & a reliance on CGI or other technology to make them "watchable".

It said "there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens". So I'd say no. Until the final episode, The Hand of God, it was more or less left to your imagination. But in The Hand of God, they receive radio signals of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which would place the series after 1969. However, Galactica 1980 should've have been Galactica 1999 or Galactica 2000 since its based thirty years after the original series. Glen A. Larsen has since disowned Galactica 1980, and according to him, the original series takes place in the future, and when the Galactica finally does reach Earth, they'd find a highly advanced civilization capable of fighting the Cylons.

ABC executives had not figured the outpouring of support the original BSG had following the show's cancellation. So instead of bringing back Galactica and its original cast, the network brass decided to feature this horrible spin-off hoping that fans would reject it in droves and thus have a legitimate excuse for pulling the plug on the series for good. The plan worked. Out of all the episodes aired, the only one that generated any substantial ratings was the episode featuring Dirk Benedict as Starbuck.
