Galant VR-4 Subframe Restoration Part 2

Like the foundation of a house being the most crucial part of its construction, the subframes of an automobile are that vehicle's foundation. You wouldn't remodel a house with a compromised foundation because your efforts wouldn't last. Not unless the foundation is part of the renovation. It's no different for cars. The handling, responsiveness, safety and stability of the car depend on the subframes being straight, solid and stable enough to handle the kinds of forces that will be exerted on it while it's in use.
All of the suspension, braking, steering functions depend on the subframe being tight enough to keep the wheels and tires in line, yet it must give enough so that those forces don't fatigue the body and cause its structure to fail. Over time, bushings tear and rot, fasteners rust and seize, sometimes they can break. The only way to ensure you get the most out of your restoration efforts is if the foundation is solid. This short series about the Galant subframe restorations will give you a good idea for what to look for.
I also cover the parts list for most all of the systems under the car that I've collected so far. It's an extensive list, and not all of it will be used. Some of these items I've acquired just so that I can show you the challenges of attempting this on a 3-decade old Mitsubishi product and prepare you for what to expect. This is by no means a worst-case-scenario. The vehicle I'm demonstrating this with is exceptional. Many of the parts we're replacing aren't even bad. They're being replaced to ensure a stable foundation, and many many years of safe, responsive, comfortable fun... and to handle the performance upgrades slated for this car's future.

Then printed and bound a hard copy. 90% of internet car questions could be resolved by the all mighty FSM

These videos are the perfect balance of being entertaining and informative. I don’t have a GVR4 but I have a 3000GT VR4 and the design of the suspension and rear steer is extremely similar. This series will be helpful as my rolling restoration continues

Tip on H&R springs on the GVR4, cut one coil on the rear or else it will sit too high in the back. The KYB struts you have are for a DSM and the front spring perch is a little lower than the original GVR4 so the front sits lower than what H&R intended. It also will bottom out easier than designed so make sure you have good bump stops and you will probably adjust the front struts pretty stiff. By removing one coil on the H&R rear springs, it will sit level. Lastly, the rear springs have extra coils for ride height so cutting one coil doesn't affect the spring rate.

Correct, those progressive springs are designed like that with 'dead coils' on them. I've done this with progressively wound springs in the past and it works just fine.👍

My opinion hasn't changed, I still believe that car is in awesome condition considering the age and where it lived. It makes sense that the passenger side would be worse as it runs on the lower side of the road with all the slush and salt. Thanks for sharing your journey, Jafro, I'm really enjoying it.

Are you changing to gas shocks? I had them on my S2000 and preferred the ride and adjustability. It will also give you the ability to adjust the ride height if needed.

When all completed- I'd really like to see this rear steering system working, up on a lift. That would be really cool to watch in action; multiple cameras, multiple screens, steering wheel input-to-output cause & effect type thing. I can't wait to get my own projects going, I'm outside, in my paved lot. Electricity is from a generator, air compressor. All totally "off grid" & at Mother Nature's mercy. No garage, lift, or help. I had the magical hindsight to begin buying everything 6 years ago, some parts would be nearly impossible and/or cost prohibitive now- so I'm blessed and not complaining! It's 23F, wind & sleet here in Central New York right now, so no wrenching yet. Take care, love you, Sir!

You need a set of those knipex grippers. No flat surface, no problem, lock um down and they will hold it still. Used them for problem child alignments. Customer wont replace shit, grip it and rip it. Works every time thanks to knipex. I think knipex calls them "cobra" pliars? Either way they are god tier tools IF you wanna spend money, Tarox brakes front and rear. Pedal feel is better than typical big brake kits. Tarox does more smaller pots instead of fewer larger pots. Insane quality in my opinion. Pedal feel is better, brake fade happens less often because smaller pots don't absorb heat as much. Now i need the next episode lmao this build makes me happy lol

The fittings that are on the rear power steering look exactly like what vw used on the mk3 platform. The community has created an adapter to go from the oring fitting to standard flare to make creating custom/replacement lines easier. May be worth checking into

Looks like you've got a long list of part blasting ahead of you. I used to do media blasting as a college job. If I can make a suggestion, the glass bead you are most likely using is some of the worst media you can use. It breaks down really fast (creates dust) and isn't all that good at removal. If you want to do your homie a solid, convert to a media called either Star Blast or Staurolite (whichever is easier to get). It works much much better, doesn't break down as fast and is less "dusty". Its garnet based rather than sand, so it is more angular than sand and as it does break down it creates more angles and remains effective which means you should spend LESS time blasting. It's also not really that expensive. If I recall a 50ish lb bag is like $40-50. Just my $.02.

The natural media is way less aggressive. Whether its walnut or corncob, they aren't great at removing paint or rust. I mean it will do it but at a much much slower rate. It is good at cleaning parts that are carbon caked like valves and pistons or internal things or where you absolutely cannot disturb the base metal. Walnut and the like are good at polishing metal in a vibratory tumbler though. I hope that helps.@@Stratos1988

Ok, nice on not breaking stuff. Also, I didn't know that the secondary sterring pump was gear driven , I thought it was eletric motor driven . Thank you for sharing. I have only seen 2 of these cars when I worked at a tire bay at bjs Wholesale Club & both cars were rusty rot boxes here in ny. 1 had a working system but leaking & the other was not working but had all kinds of new parts sadly. It's just amazing what you see at a shop lol. Once again, thank you & be safe & good progress. 👍

Glad to see you bringing Greenie back to life, he’s a well preserved example or specimen of an Bygone era. When Mitsubishi was breaking it off it all its competitors and wanted to make awesome AWD creations. Now that Nissan has controlling interest of Mitsubishi…..it’s unlikely we’ll ever see anything like these relics of Mitsubishi’s glory days again. Maybe they’ll bring back a nameplate and completely shit on it…wait they already did! Glad we have dedicated Mitsubishi fans like you and I that want to keep fix and enjoy these cars for many years to come.

There was an article about a concept EV version of it that never panned out to be anything more than a fan rendering trying to drum up interest with some bad writing and bad ideas. I'm against turning iconic sports cars into SUVs and/or EVs which is a thing many car companies do lately. At least the fan rendering of the Galant was still a sedan. I'll give him more credit for that one at the very least. What I'd rather see is a sympathy production run of spare parts for these iconic cars instead. Perhaps including a sternly worded letter on Mitsubishi letterhead in each box that says "Take better care of the $#!† we built for you." in Kanji.

A theory of the rear subframe being stubborn on the passenger side and normal 30 year stuck on the drivers: Crown of the road, most roads are crowned and water and salt grime tends to pool on the outer edges. just a thought. Thank you for preserving these iconic cars from our generation.

When I dropped out my subframe I put it into two furniture movers from home depot and had filled in the gaps with plywood to keep stuff from sagging. Worked great to wheel around and back under the car and out of the way in my small garage.

Get a small shop vac and hook it up to the port in the back of that blast cabinet assuming it still has the rubber plug in it you can just cut a hole for the hose and jam in in there. I did it to mine works great 👍 no need for a respirator anymore

Of course you're not obligated to join, you can just wait for them to pop up here... but trust me, this was only about 1/4 of it. lol! I typically try to use the parts I show or preview them for the next video. Basically show them when they're relevant. Nice to see the progress. I believe power steering line fittings are similar to other mits high pressure connections from what I see. You said the some of the bushings are in good condition. If you are powder coating you will likely need to remove them and unfortunately destroy them by doing so :(. Looks like you plan on replacing them all anyway. All part of the adventure. Keep on going!

I had an Eagle 2000 GTX, the Canadian version of this chassis. It was beyond being reasonable to save but I'd sandblasted all the subframes and arms before getting to that realization. Still have them all sitting in a shed. They've barely rusted again in all this time.

Those power steering fittings IIRC are "saginaw" style, should be metric, probably 10 and 12mm... I had those style fittings on my 87 Nissan's rack. I had AN converter fittings on mine.

I have been watching videos of people restoring Celica All-Tracs, and this feels just as good to watch. I never realize there could be so many bushings to replace in an old AWD car. I think I saw some of the ST185 and ST205 versions. Since the Galant VR-4 and Celica All-Trac basically started out as a FWD car, and AWD was added later, did the manufacturer come up with weird ways to implement AWD? I used to work with the occasional VW MKIV and B5, and they used a solid rear axle on FWD versions, but a full independent suspension on AWD models. It felt weird to look at. 35:30 I don't know how well Dorman bushings and ball joints hold up. That is why sometimes I like rebuilding an old control arm.

Yup, the H&R's are a progressive wound spring. They ride great in anything I've had them in. I've ran everything from their springs with Bilstein's/ Koni's and also their Ultra Low coilovers. Nice job on the poly bushings. So much better feel with them. I saw those spherical heim joints and what looked like aluminum trailing arm limiting shims? Good stuff man. I'd dump that rear steering stuff, seems like much more work than it's worth to introduce more play in the rear end and more stuff to mess around with.

6:00 To little to late but you CAN wash away rust with power washer. De-iron or decontamination products for car body for example carpro IronX can lift and move some rust. There are also some more potent acidic water soliuable products for thicker amounts, but I know only my local european stuff so you would have to search around your area.

33:30 those are solid sub frame mounts. I recognize the size because on my 1G replaced the old rubber ones with polyurethane. I hope they hold up.

14:25 I was changing the engine in my 4wd trailblazer. The front differential goes though the oil pan. Left side carrier presses into pan. Right side the acuator presses in. Im in PA so it was corroded. Same thing I tried like hell to get it out but it was the same thing you did but I broke it.

Just wanted to say that all '90 AWD DSMs had a viscous LSD with the 3-bolt rear-end, and all 91's without ABS had it has well. None of the GVR4's had an LSD because they had the 4WS. And all '92 AWD DSM's had the 4-bolt rear regardless of the production date. I'll go back in to my hole of useless information now. :)

Oops, you are correct. It was the 6-bolt/7-bolt changeover that happened in May. The "Early 92" is a designation where you could get both the 6-bolt block and 4-bolt LSD rear together. Yes, all '92's had 4-bolt rears. I've got a sweet spreadsheet I created that breaks down every part group by production date and I made it 9 years ago, but it wasn't open in front of me while I was scripting this, and I referenced the 7-bolt date. An "Early 92" was the Colt's donor. 6-bolt/4-bolt.

@@Jafromobile I'm only making 325WHP I wanted more grip and push from the rear, now I have a bit of Snap over Steer. I went all out on the drive train, a Dogbox Quaife up front Spider center and Kaaz in the rear along with an Aluminum drive shaft. But I'm going to swap the Aluminum shaft for a Carbin Fiber unit, the Aluminum has a resonance I don't like.

Convert the blasting cabinet to a wet blasting cabinet is an easy modification RU-vid has videos on how to do it this will clean up the parts & give a nicer finish than dry sand/media blasting , yep is that a new turbo for the Hyundai in the box.

if you find a dead compressor take the tank off and fit nitto fittings and use it as a accumulator tank it will double your blasting time

That's actually what we're doing with that 80gal Craftsman unit next to the Chicago unit! I told Matt I'd split a big compressor with him. We need a big unit with a fast recovery rate to keep up with some of our tools. That little compressor's a trooper but more suited for a home garage than what we're doing with it.

10:50 Why you don't use the open end of the wrench to loosen bolts. You'll strip it. You should use the closed end and 6 points for 6 points bolts, 12 points for 12 bolt bolts.

When replacing PS or brake lines and the flare nut is partially or fully stripped, I would use a grinder to cut the line off near the flare nut, then hammer a socket onto the flare nut. For ABS (or similar) sensors that get stuck in their bore, use an adjustable hammer on it and wiggle it back and forth. Even on a steel bodied sensor, hammering it can damage the sensor. There is a downside to a paper service manual. Over the years since it’s inception, the manufacturer will make additional notes and edits, sometimes completely changing how a service is done. Honda k series VCT actuators for example, used to require full disassembly of the side of the engine and the timing chain. Skunk2 came up with a way of using a bungee cord to hold the chain to the hood, meaning a 9 hour service can now be done in an hour. Honda suddenly changed their manual (and warranty repair times) basically immediately.

could a machine shop where machined the block also do that. the adjustment to the oil pump shaft? it would appear that there is a place, but it is not machined for the newer model

Well that 4 bolt cup information hurts a bit. I already started down the path of deleting the factory VR-4 AWS. Ill trade you all my AWS 3 bolt stuff for 4 bolt stuff ;) Cali car most its life, pump was still pumpin when i parked it summer of 22'

It's hard to say for sure, but the power steering flares at 27:40 look an awful lot like GM O-ring flares for fuel and power steering lines. There's a flaring tool available for them in 5/16 and 3/8 tube, and most LS powered trucks through the 2000s use those flares with 16 and 18 millimeter fittings, not to mention plenty of aftermarket AN line adapter fittings.

I need this tool. It's interesting that American car companies use it, and Honda uses it... but nowhere else on a Mitsubishi do you find it? I bring up Honda because the steering rack, lines and technology are the most non-Mitsubishi looking things I've ever seen on these cars, and it was the Prelude who in the import scene was the first to have AWS. I wonder if Mitsubishi borrowed any tech from their neighbor?

@@Jafromobile I've seen it across a bunch of manufacturers when replacing steering racks, pumps and boxes, I just couldn't remember specific makes, import or domestic. I used GM as an example because any crossover with LS stuff will make it that much easier to deal with.

Metric vehicles use what they call an ISO-bubble flare. Anyway, A good thing to do is bring the old parts to a hydraulic hose fabrication shop and pay someone to fab up a new unit.

Yo, jafro, those axle cups dont look all that complicated... I live too far away(europe), and my machine setup at the moment is in no state to produce any large parts, but i am damn sure that you must know a machinist or two, hell, you can contact some of the youtube machinists, like the inheritance machining and collab a project... As far as i perceive from my machinist armchair, the only thing that you need is the cup that affixes to the short wheel spindle in the trailing arm and has the right geometry to mount the axle`s cup via 4 bolts... A decent machinist can make you such an item entirely on a lathe, but that would be nonsense when other machines can allow the work to be done much faster, but the point is simplicity of the thing... You can take off the 4 bolt cup for a short time and send it to the machinist to replicate... Its literally a part made from a cylinder of decent steel with a bit of turning and some milling/drilling and tapping... Possibly it has a keyway of some sorts that would need be broached or milled in, but that all can be done with pleasure and ease if someone is willing to work with you on a collab, or paid to do it... Most youtube machinists that have larger machines are lovers of turning wheels and such things and gladly do collabs in that regard... Reach out, you do some machining related content yourself, so it can only help ping pong the audiences...

Still am. Still drive a 402A optioned F-150 5.0L. Used to have two of them (a 99 F-150 XL), but I sold it to someone who would give it more love than it got with my 402A in the driveway. Neither one is a better truck than the other, just different strengths. All the Fords I grew up with were Shelbys and DeTomaso's.

I already did back in 2003! It went a 12.73@113. That was .16s faster than the dial-in time its owner wrote on it. He might show up in the comments here to confirm this because I think the track mailed him a check. We didn't check in at the tower before we left. I ran it through 5 rounds of bracket racing eliminations by lifting at the 1000 foot, sending 4 people home. Most of them were faster cars, and they kept breaking out because I'd be ahead with a good launch and they thought they were losing trying to run me down as I braked or lifted. A win's a win, but it din't make many of them happy.

From where I live, we have wrecking yards where they stockpile axle cups and guys who can find axle cups based on the dimensions and not on the part numbers

If I wanna go to a 4 bolt setup on my 90 talon, what all do I need to change? I have the 4 bolt axles, diff, and driveshaft. Also have the spindles. Is that all I need?

You'd need the 4 bolt cups that bolt the spindles to the axles. Exact same pickle I'm in. It's why we're out of them.

Bit I have 3 sets of 4 bolt axles plus the other stuff I mentioned and been wanting to do the swap just wasn't sure if I have everything

I know this is a Galant, not a DSM, but they appear to share many components and assemblies, so I'm just wondering how rare is a 4 bolt rear axle flange and 6 bolt crankshaft combo? I have a '92 Talon and it's got both, manufactured April/May of that year. Did I win the spec lottery or something?

Only for a short time of production did DSMs get both of those together. People refer to them as the "magic '92's". The 6 bolt production stopped in May of 1992, but all the 92's got a 4-bolt rear. They are uncommon, and a really really rusty rust bucket of a magic 92 was the donor for my Colt, and the 6-bolt donor of the Glyptal block project. They're not impossible to find, but definitely a gift whenever you do!

Seriously though, I had no idea when I bought it as the original and only owner back in July of '92 (add yet another unicorn point) what 6 or 4 bolt meant let alone that this was a find. I just wanted a new sporty car and it had the best combination of features I was looking for at the time (fast, affordable, AWD, manual, nice-looking) to take on a months-long cross country trip. Had a blast and now nearing completion of my several years long restoration project doing many of the same things you've been doing on yours, e.g. complete front/rear suspension rebuild, trans rebuild, driveshaft rebuild, throttle/intake rebuild. It'll be as good or better than new in some ways when I'm done, hopefully this year although the body will have to wait till next year as that's a whole other thing.

Kudos on all the efforts you've done, but pat yourself on the back for all the efforts you saved yourself along the way, and didn't have to mess with. Now you just need a 2g or EVO exhaust manifold, and a 2g throttle body elbow. ;) Fingers crossed it's back on the road again soon!

@@Jafromobile I'll have to see about mods and more serious upgrades. First I want to get it back more or less to stock shape and then I'll decide. Gotta walk before you run. I'm too old to get into racing, tuning and all that. I just want a fun car to drive around and take on road trips. Been a while since I've gone on those. But it's actually been driveable for several years now as I started with the issues that kept it from being driven, like a totally worn out clutch, bad trans (kept popping out of first, had to replace the 1st-2nd hub/sleeve/synchros/fork and some other parts while I was at it), sloppy clutch pedal and seized calipers. That made it driveable. Only then did I move onto the less critical but still important tasks like replacing the TB/BB/WP, rebuilding the struts and suspension, overhauling the gas tank, etc. The car was actually in fairly good shape when I started several years ago, for its age. I just figured it's a nice car so might as well go all the way. When I eventually sell it, it'll be worth quite a bit more than it when I started. I have a ton of admiration and respect for what guys like you and the folks on DSMTuners and such do and if I were several decades younger I might just get into it, it's just not my thing at this point in my life, but the expertise you guys share has been invaluable. No way I could have done half of this without it. You rock.

@@Jafromobile I recently bought an original service manual for my 1984 200SX and all I can say is wow they don't make 'em like they used to! Nooks with a B that is. Every diagram is so beautiful and clear and I could find any part on that car in seconds with thatmanual. Don't get me wrong, I love a digital manual that I can ctrl+f my way through, but then again when cars were a bit simpler it was much less necessary. I'll tell you what though, that 1984 manual is about 10X better than the 1994 Mazda RX-7 manual I had to constantly go through in terrible scanned digital format for the 13B BRZ build. At any rate, some of the old books are really fun. That's my basic point.

The logic in that is sound. I'm sure that it could play a factor. What's most likely in my case is the passenger side has never once been taken apart, but the rear driver's side trailing arm had been replaced with a junkyard unit, so absolutely everything on that side of the car had been taken loose before. So there was only about a decade since it had been apart instead of 3 decades. You'll see the paint marker writing on it in the video. When you see that, it means it's a junkyard part.
