Taking a picture of the Andromeda Galaxy with a DSLR camera from 2008.
Try Processing it Yourself: astrobackyard.com/process-and...
In this video, I illustrate why I feel that astrophotography is more about the photographer's skill than how good your equipment is.
Don't believe me? Look at the difference between the two shots. Is a Dedicated Astronomy Camera really that much better than a DSLR camera?

The most fascinating thing about the Andromeda galaxy photos is, that almost all dots behind the galaxy are another galaxies, jsut much further. I love this video.

Man, I thought I clicked on a video from 2016 when I saw the HEQ5 coming out! What a throwback this video was and great results. I think one other aspect that really plays in which we'll be aware of as photographers is how important the glass is also. Though I do definitely agree when you say how processing plays an enormous part in this. Imagine how you'd feel as 2016 Trevor making that ISO1600 DSLR image back then!

I'm still using an almost identical rig for nebulae, except with a dedicated astro cam. I have the Zenithstar 73 too which is a really nice instrument and quite affordable, and a HEQ5 which I did the Rowan belt mod for after watching your video Ruzeen! - as it gave me the confidence to do it! Autoguiding graph was definitely much improved afterwards. My latest project is trying to image Andromeda too with this rig from Western Australia - it's very low to the north but I worked out last year that it rises above the treetops for an hour or two at this time of year. Your northern hemisphere astrophotographers are very lucky to have our closest neighbouring galaxy high in your skies, but I guess we have Carina Nebula and targets like Omega Centauri and Centaurus A down here as a trade off.🙃

Aww man, I loved this! - The results from your old gear still look superb, such a great demonstration! - It goes to show the power of quality processing skills and attention to detail, well done! 😀 This resonated with me as I've been using a fairly low budget uncooled camera for a while now and think the results are fantastic still, thank you for making this! The video I've been waiting for. When I found your channel all of those years ago, this is very similar to the rig and tech you were using (except it was the Explore Scientific ED80 scope). Yes, I expected that the rig would perform well, but what is most impressive is how far you've grown as an astrophotographer, story teller, and processing wizard. I'm not gonna lie, I got the chilly-bumps when I saw that old Canon Rebel, blue storage bin, and HEQ5 roll out. And that photo reveal...incredible work. Thank you so much for the throw-back moment. And, Rudy's still got IT!

I have to admit, it's been a while that I've seen your videos, I've been caught up in some problems for the past 6 months but as soon as I came back, i got that sense of comfort watching your videos. They inspire me to start astrophotography but small scale since the budget you know. I don't know why but while watching you videos, i forget about all my problems in the real world, maybe that's because of this hobby or your simple yet impactful editing. I'd love to see some more videos on processing and how you've improved in processing so we can too. Maybe how you process now.

Okay, that is about to change as I finally got great data from my newer setup with an ASI Air Pro and MC2600 camera. Hi Trevor. Been watching your channel for a couple years and last year I finally received my Apertura 8" reflector scope. Great recommendation for beginners and grandkids, wife and I have been astounded by the views of the planets, moon and even Andromeda and Orion Nebula. Thanks for that! This question is a little off topic but need to ask you something and maybe you could make a separate video on the topic for us beginners about focal length and using add on equipment. We just received a W/O Binoviewer a couple days ago to ramp up our experience and had it two day delivery because we are going out to a dark sky spot for the weekend. We were disappointed when we couldn't get it into focus. I realize it has someone to do focal ratio and focal point etc.. it seems that when the bino is fully forward we can only see an image of the mirror with the shadow of the secondary in the middle. But if I focus it on the neighbors tree about 100 feet away during the daytime it works beautifully? I tried Jupiter last night with the setup (20mm eyepieces, 1.6 supplies Barlow) and just say the primary with the secondary shadow in the middle. I called the distributor and they suggested a few corrections to our setup but would rather not move the primary forward etc.. some have said to put an 1" extension on the nosepiece to bring it toward the mirrors. Others have suggested using a 2x Barlow. Or maybe the Binoviewer isn't compatible with the 8" reflector? Not sure what direction to take because we are really looking forward to this addition. Also, really thinking seriously about the Vespera (user friendly) came as another entry level to the photography branch after watching your older review. Thanks!!

Another great video. I watched your videos a few years ago as I was just starting in astrophotography. This one is bittersweet, as it shows both what great results you can get with the most minimal equipment (which we all now have in storage), while also showing how much better your results can be with some better equipment. On an unrelated topic, I think a good video would be about how to advise a friend who wants to get started in astrophotography, but who has limited technical expertise. I have such a friend. He wants me to bring my telescope (Explore ED127) to his mountaintop home to see some daytime sights ( distant islands, ships at sea, etc.) My plan is to later show him visually some of the glorious things to be seen in the sky, point him to your video "Deep-Sky Astrophotography with a DSLR & Telescope (STEP-BY-STEP)" and then encourage him to get started using a DSLR and a midrange wide field scope like a WO GT71. Everybody has a DSLR in a cupboard somewhere, and a WO GT71 is so gorgeous it makes you want to start using it. But I would love to see/hear your take.

@@JZINGER1 You could simply mount your DSLR camera on a star tracker and that would be a great start. There are some nice ones in the Sky Watcher Star Adventurer series (2, 2i, GTi) as well as the iOptron SkyGuider Pro mounts.
@stefanschneider3681
@stefanschneider3681 Год назад
@@JZINGER1 My suggestions: First you should have fun to go outside at night when its sometimes freacking cold and enjoy the night sky. Second I would suggest a tripod for longer exposures. If it's still fun then a star tracker like the one mentioned above seems a good choice (Star Adventurer GTI). And of course get into some processing skills like stacking ... And my last tip: Don't compare your pictures with Trevor, Nico, Chuck, Dylan or the Star Hunters ... they truly master every step on this way ...
@jasonpatterson8091
@jasonpatterson8091 Год назад
@@JZINGER1 As the others said, it's worth getting out and learning a bit of the sky. For Milky Way images you can do that with any standard lens on a tripod, just shoot short exposures and stack them. It's really, really easy to spend a bunch of money really fast in this hobby, and not even on big ticket items. There are very few items you truly need, but there are tons that make life easier and your images a little better. If you're wanting to shoot larger nebulas or the few big galaxies, you can easily do that with any good telephoto lens and a star tracker. If your DSLR has a built in timer/shutter bulb then that's great. You want the ability to tell the camera to take 80 exposures of length X and wait Y seconds between images. If it doesn't have that, or if doing so is cumbersome, a programmable shutter timer like this (PIXEL Wireless Timer Remote Control E3/N3, don't want to post a link and have my comment deleted, but it's on Amazon and reasonably priced. That is the Canon version, I'm sure there's a Nikon or Sony one if that's your jam.) is very, very useful. You can reasonably do one night of programming single exposures over and over again, but it's worth the $50 to get a timer. If you try to take pictures and wind up having issues with dew or frost, you'll want a lens warmer/dew heater. If you don't already have one, a good headlamp with a red/white switchable light is also handy, particularly if you're lucky enough to have dark skies. I like the Coast 19291, which is cheap and goes through a set of batteries in ~40 hours. There are rechargeables, but they're significantly more expensive. Whatever you pick, make sure it has a red lamp as an option, as red light doesn't affect your night vision nearly as badly. If you're in a city this may not be an issue at all, and a lot of these RU-vid guys do everything with their back porch lights on then shut things down once everything is set. I like to see the sky and I live in a deep dark part of the country, so on a new moon it's genuinely impossible to see what I'm doing without some help.
@astrofckups4305
@astrofckups4305 Год назад
Upgrading to a dedicated camera depends on how warm it gets where you live. When I used to use a DSLR it was a great performer in winter, but in summer became a hot noisy mess. Also a dedicated camera allow you to reuse bias and dark frames as you can keep the temperature the same for different targets.

Great video. I had this "discussion" at the local telescope store after delving back into astrophotography after a 10 year hiatus. There is so much peer pressure to have "the cool equipment" that the underlying objective gets lost. In fact, that's all of what was talked about in the local photography club. Funny, but when I used to do editorial and news photo gigs, I noticed guys putting electrical tape over their camera's branding to avoid the silly debates.

This is so relatable... My trusty old 450D was the reason I started astrophotography 1 year ago. It was just a sad sight to see it sitting in a corner and being replaced by smaller cameras or even smartphones. And since I always wanted to get a good scope and a go-to mount, the decision was made to give it a second life :) Things have escalated quickly from there and I'm using modern cameras now on said scope, but the 450D (now astro-modified) is still around on a small, portable setup I have with a Star Adventurer and an Askar 300 or the Samyang 135mm. I always appreciate your vids and have learned so much from them, great content and passion. You mentioned astro modifying your own camera. I have watched Gary Honis t4 astro mod and attempted to repeat it using the Astronomik MC-Klarglas for the EOS 1000D. I was unable to find any data, other than Gary's attention to detail for reinstallation of the sensor, to position it correctly. I gave it my best shot and the camera seems to focus ok, but have not had a chance to use it behind my scopes yet. Any thoughts based on your experience? I do have the field flattener from ES for the Canon Rebel. Thanks for all you do.

Hi Trevor, I was wondering if it would be possible to do a video on the filter wheel please? Explaining the difference between the manual and electric versions, as well as, how to install them. Thank you. If you already have one, I can't find it.

Nice work! I don’t too much difference. Could you show us how you processed the image? I’m in a bottle 4 using a rokinon 135 and a canon 40 d. Can’t get images like yours!!! Thanks again for your work.

I have a T3i and a T7i available to modify. I'm leaning towards the latter. My T7i has less noise than the older T3i and I have an M6 Mk2 as my daily driver.

Good video, It's not bad that somewhat old cameras can also capture good images.
