Galicia, in the Northwest of Spain is a remarkable place. The rich landscape is paired with a rich and proud Celtic culture.

Fati Landscapes Exactly! I'm from Galicia as well but live in the States. Your English is perfect. Like J Ch said, some can't even write their own and it's the only language they speak. Like you said they think in Spain people walk around with castañuelas, travel in wagons and we're gypsies. To me that is total ignorance and lack of world history knowledge. I was asked once how come my skin was white and I had blue eyes. 🤤

They are called Celtiberians. For the other like Germanic, romans and etc tribes it's the minority that influence the Iberian genetic gene pool of the Iberian Peninsula. It was mostly the Celts. But north of Spain they are called Basque ancient Iberians of what is now Spain and Portugal.

NoctisAugustus Noo that's why many of the Medieval Spanish royals were often described or depicted as very pale, blonde or red haired blue eyed People. The are contemporary depictions from the times of the Moorish rule that portray Spaniards and the Spanish Muslims converts in Moor/arab clothing as very pale, blonde or red haired people. I've red that Medieval Spanish royals were of Goths, Germanic origin. Anyway I often debate Americans who claim that Spaniards, Italians, Portuguese or Greeks are NOT White People. Spain is only associate with Andalusia like Italy with Sicily. Northern Italy is also different from Southern Italy concerning culture, food and even looks. Like in Spain Northern Italians tend to be lighter in complexion, blond, red hair and blue eyed people are pretty common there. Italians or Spaniards are mostly brunettes, Mediterranean people but not that dark how people think. There are of course very dark individuals from South Italy or South Spain due to the Middle Eastern or Northern African admixture. Yet natural dark olive skin is relatively rare in South Italy or South Spain and in Northern Italy or Northern Spain even almost non-existing. The Sun tanned skin of Mediterranean people is often mistaken for natural dark olive skin. The Spanish Flamenco dancers and musicians that are often Gypsies and not ethnic Spaniards are considered outside Spain as the typical Spaniards

Ricardo Pontes Spain is made up of nations for example the Celts from Galicia and the Basques were here before the Romans and preserved their language throughout the centuries meaning they are at least two millennia old. And as the Reconquista started from the north it was mainly Galicians and basques who conquered south and repopulated the area with Christians. Thus the Spanish race is about 75% Celtic at the south and about 85% in the north where they keep their ancient languages. Thus it could be argued that Spain are just these nations that expanded although in truth there are many nations and cultures in Spain.

The idea of 'Spanish' dressed in flamenco and singing is rather Andalusian, in the rest of Spain, each autonomous community has its culture, I am from the Valencian community and we also have our own music and traditional dresses, and of course the Fallas and many traditional non-flamenco festivals. @@enekoeneko69 is not a gypsy folklore. Flamenco comes from Egyptians when they create a type of primitive guitars, then arabs perform their music and develop the guitars. It is true the Galician and Portuguese cultures have some common denominators. However, let's not forget that after achieving its independence (1128-1179), Portugal has expanded to the south of the peninsula absorbing and also being influenced by the Moorish culture present there. On top of that the age of discoveries also significantly shaped the country's identity as opposed to Galiza. In terms of language I believe current day Portuguese is closer to the language that was at its inception (Old Portuguese/Old Galician) than current day Galician. Despite being exposed to the Moorish culture that was not significantly reflected in the language itself apart from the addition of a number of new words. Galician however has been oppressed for centuries by the central government (Castile until 18th century, Spain after that). Franco stroke the final blow by impeding the usage of Galician and imposing Castilian. When Galicians tried to restored the usage of their language the accent was by then influenced to a great extent by Castilian. Still, it's interesting to see how people are getting more informed about history trying to go as far as the actual historiographical sources to forge their one opinion on the topic. Most of them find that the historical facts are not necessarily coherent with what they have been taught in the Spanish school system which has an important ideological dimension to it.

That is a complete rong idea. Is like sayng that a galician absorved things from an Andaluzian. Portugal even though smaller than Spain kept it´s cultural diversity. Minho/ Trás os Montes share the same culture with Galicians. The Estremaduras , both Portuguse and Spanish, share the culture Alentejo and Algarve, share their culture with Anadaluzes And that is in music, food, habits, accents, dances and so much more. It is not a coincidence, that people from Lisbon still call Galegos to the people from the North of Portugal, and find the Minho´s people ways , dances, manners and accent really strange. Strange is a kind word that I am using for what they think of Minhotos....

Well, you were also in Santiago, therefore it's next to impossible being there and not listening to a bagpipe sooner or later. That tunnel in particular, they have turns to play there,it's a busking place for pipers and musicians in general, and since so many people pass by that particular point, they had to set a timetable so they all could, one way or another, benefit from that. If you go anywhere else in Galicia, chances are you're not hearing bagpipes unless it's some kind of "fiesta". That being said, I wonder (I'm yet to see if you've talked about it in any other video) what you had to say about our food. It's not exactly paella and tortilla... I understand everybody has the right to be proud of their history/culture/language/heritage but to bludgeon you over the head with it seems unnecessary. The world is a very big place and country boundaries aren't cleanly drawn along cultural lines often, it would almost impossible to know everything about every country you visited. I'm not making excuses for ignorance but give the guy a break, he went to Galicia he learned something new and he was surprised and enjoyed the difference in language and culture. To which the initial response should probably not be "OMG learn something idiot".

Also with its own unique language, only this one sounded Welsh-ish to me, what with all the weird extra Y's and U's at the end of everything. +John NoNameGibbon ther are not special celtic elements in fala (galician dialect in the west), asturian (center),' or the spanish/castillian dialects in the east. Indeed you can find some celtic word, and guess what? They came all from latin and are shared with italian or french or spanish. The languages in Asturias are part of the romance continium. There is nothing special or particular about them. Source: ALL the linguistic manuals ever written.

Mexico was colonized mostly by Andalusians, but unlike the English, those andalusian spaniards were forbidden by the king to mistreat natives. There was and still is tension in Mexico between class and races, but for the most part races began and continued to inter-marry. Now if like most Americans you rely on Hollywood for your info, in the eyes of the rest of the world you are ignorant. Just as Spain has different cultures and geographic regions so does Mexico. And no Mexico is not at all similar to Spain because of the native aztec maya and other cultures that were preserved. There are a few cultural traits the spaniards left in the Americas, but not to many as they weren't really interested in imposing their culture on other peoples. So Americans buy yourselfs some maps and do some research on the rest of the world so you can get your education up to par with the rest of the world.

It is indeed true, David, that there is a certain vague acknowledgement of "Celtic-ness" among Galicians. However, I think it's a bit inaccurate for reasons of overstatement to say that they are "Celtic", per se, as we commonly define that metric in the modern day. Compared to other parts of Spain, Galicia certainly has Celtic roots, yes (but even then, I would argue, a lot of it is from romanticized 19th-century ethnic/cultural "artificial reconstruction"), but compared to Ireland or Scotland, it's usually not considered "full-Celtic", and certainly not Gaelic.

@hoseruisu30
@hoseruisu30 6 лет назад
