really cool, thanks! But what were the exact tubes you ended up with after tube rolling? To factor in when ordering the amp? My taste usually tends to me more towards Jay's taste than Thomas'... Even though I like watching both channels!
Nice to see you guys, spending time together. You see, Thomas that project of yours is bringing to you more than just an audiophile dream end. It gives you time to spare with people you care. Thumbs up for that and greeting from France! ;)
I have been saying this for years, the room is the most important component in an audio system. Room treatment is not an option for the best sound. People spend thousands on equipment and totally ignore the room.
It is 100% true the room is the most important aspect of getting the best sound of your system, if the room sounds like crap your system sounds like crap there is no way around this than to have acoustic treatments. Now do you have to spend an arm and a leg for the acoustic treatments? No you can make them yourself, use existing furniture and or things around your house . Those who make up excuses about room treatments are shortchanging themselves then they turn around and complain they their gear is no good 🤷🏽
Excellent I’m so happy for Thomas that he’s coming out with a fantastic product I would not have to think twice or have a buyers remorse because I love him his honesty and also Jay he’s the guy I will trust with my life once again congratulations
I think that it's really cool to see that it has tone controls, which i find very useful and are unfortunately missing in too much gear these days, because of the myth that they degrade the sound quality. In response to that I say McIntosh, Luxman, and Marantz all have tone controls. I also like that it has line in and out, sub out, a remote, and auto bias. Very cool feature set. The only thing missing is a triode/pentode switch
Yes... But, you can defeat them 😁 BTW, you notice the names of the ones you mention that DO have tone controls... all older models usually. ANY additional components in the signal path CAN degrade the signal and usually does. In over 40 years, I never use them (but, I have to admit that I *DO* cheat a little by having a bi-amped system where my high end tall open baffle dipole multi-driver line arrays are driven by an Ayon Orion II integrated tube amp and the 2-15" dipole woofers are driven by a bridged Crown 2502 amp - so, I can cheat a little by raising the volume of the Crown if I want more 'bass', BUT... without actually changing or shifting the 'pure' tone signature) BUT... again, with that said, some people like you with their personal system and room configuration DO indeed like to use tone controls, so I am NOT saying that is 'wrong' or anything. But, to say categorically that *ANY* degradation by tone controls is a 'MYTH' is patently wrong my friend, sorry 😊
@@latheofheaven BS! Current Mac, Luxman, and Marantz amps all have tone controls. Keep drinking the "audiofool" Kool-Aid if it makes you happy. Let's do a blind test with one of them and see if you can hear the difference between the tone controls defeated and them active but in the center position. Both you and I know you won't be able to hear a idfference, but you'll never admit it. 🤡
@@DougMen1 Marantz receivers have a switch called Pure Direct that eliminates all tone controls and unnecessary circuits. Switching that on and off definitely makes a difference and sounds better with my Revel speakers. It’s not subtle.
I love it and already subscribe to both of your channels. I’m glad to see that you are both friends. Each of you do a great job! Good luck with the amplifier!
Nice to see this amp come to life. I'd be very curious to see a comparison between Galion, Primaluna, Line Magnetic, and Willlenston as they all seem to be very well designed, well built, and capable of delivering very good sound for the $$$. I have personally owned Primaluna and Line Magnetic and was surprised by how different they sounded.
I think it wonderful that Thomas I worrying about the amp being bright And addressing the problem in advance, I'm definitely intrigued... Great review, thank you.
Great first impressions, Jay. I appreciate your honesty in the sound of this amp. Speaker pairing is an important consideration if a person is to buy this amp. My biggest takeaway was the tube rolling. I understand production cost and maybe Thomas may want to reconsider either the output tube or possibly the tubes which drives the preamp portion.
I enjoy how Thomas gets many opinions on his amp. Also it is cool how his reviews include input from his friends. I am curious if you have done much tube rolling on the small signal tubes. Sometimes mixing brands is best. Also I would try 5751 tubes in place of 12ax7. Sadly 5751 are getting rare. 5751 is lower gain drop in replacement for 12ax7. They can perform better in some applications.
Hello Jay. Do you think that you could post a video explaining what you did with your front wall as far as the acoustic properties, the effects of the structure itself and why something like that is so expensive? It really peaked my interest especially when Thomas had mentioned the overall cost of that structure. I think others may enjoy the acoustic science and implementation.
Great honest assessment. What really bothers me with tube equipment is that sound quality is quite dependent on the quality of the tubes used. Is it not possible to have tube equipment that sound quality is not variable with tube used?
There are some tube amps I get from China that rolling tubes does not do anything. We think it is because the amp is so coloured that no matter what we do,the sound does not change.
I have owned many Conrad Johnson tube amps which have used the 6550 tubes and I believe the 6550 is the most natural sounding tube for an output stage.
Great video guys. Wish you could do more together. I use the tad 6550s too and I really like them also. Thomas doing some major ass kissing calling Jay an expert. Just kidding, you guys rock. I bet the amp rocks too...
Thank you for your video! Your review helped me decide to call Black Ice and they were great! Within 30 minutes of asking if I could purchase an F35 with KT170 tubes they updated the website with the kt170 option and I immediately purchased one! I can not wait to hear my Klipsch Heresy IVs with this amp. I am upgrading from a Cayin CS88a which I just listed on ebay.
I've had the ts120(tried the SE and sounded too solid state) since the beginning, and tried upgrading with pricier options. Very hard to replace unless you spend much much more in my opinion
How did I miss this one! You two together is really helpful. I am investigating the Decware now but, this is interesting too. I think I like the same sound signature you do. I like a warmer, vintage sound. Tannoy with McIntosh for example but, the McIntosh are out of my price range. I can get a pair of Cheviots (newer version) for about half off right now.
Great video and looks like Thomas has a winner on his hands. Jay every tube amp sounds better when you have rolled the tubes...😉 But Thomas the logo, the logo on the volume control needs to be moved to the front panel with the volume nob being clean. I am not OCD but I think the OCD folks out their will cover it with a sticker. 😵💫😵💫😵💫 😁😁 Great work.
Really nice ! I follow both of your channels. I would like to know the specs of your QRD on the wall ? Are they prime 7 with 2 inches wide by 4 inches deep wells ? Thank you.
No need, the final version is so smooth that you don't need 6550 unless you want buttery smooth sound. You can get TAD 6550 for that. Don't get Cwing as there are issues with that one and the TS120.
Hi Jay, nice review. I build the CSS 2TD-X partially based on your recommendation of the 1TD-X. (Wonderful speakers btw!). How do you think this amp would pair with either of those? Is there another one you would recommend?
Congrats Thomas. Liking the Galion more and more. OK, so my bad, but what tubes exactly are being mentioned, more so the one preferred by Jay. Thanks in advance. Cheers!
