Hiking in the Galloway Hills is always an adventure, and in this video I join up with members of the Galloway Mountain Rescue team for a traverse of the western sub-range, otherwise known as ‘the Range of the Awful Hand’.
The ridge consists of four mountain tops; Shalloch on Minnoch (775m), Tarfessock (697m), Kirriereoch Hill (786m) and the Merrick (843m) - and a full traverse is a fairly long day, especially when you factor in the long access and escape routes!
The route we had planned started from and ended at Kirriereoch Farm, using the forestry roads to get in and out. However, a recurring knee injury meant that I had to separate from the group on the summit of Kirriereoch Hill and make my way back down through the bogs of the ‘red glen’ - and though I didn’t get to summit the Merrick (which I’d already done three times) I did manage to discover a fantastic new area in the Galloway hills - not dissimilar to the Northern Corries in the Cairngorms!
A massive thanks to Bert and the troops for letting me join them, they taught me a lot of wee lessons and their wicked sense of humour had me laughing all the way!

Looks fantastic pal! Really enjoying the edits of your video. Flows really smoothly, and the additional info of the plane crashes etc gives the channel a nice touch :)

Rececent subscriber and first watch. Great video, great views, great weather and very informative. What a fantastic area for a good walk. Only been that way once 22 years ago on the SUW and I have very fond memories of the landscape. Cheers 👍🍻

Hi Dave, thank you very much & welcome to the channel! The walking in Galloway is fantastic, the hills may lack the height of the Northern peaks, but they are every bit as challenging :) ATB!

Great video. I was up on the Merrick on Friday, great weather for it. I share your pain with the IT Band, a mix of strength training at the gym, plenty of breaks when out, poles and the odd painkiller has it mostly under control. Still has a habit of flaring up when I least expect it in the middle of big hill days!

Hi Patrick, thanks for your comment! Friday / Saturday were brilliant for the hills, almost like summer! I've found that a decent 20 minute break works well, but it's sometimes difficult to find a moment to halt progress when walking with a team. It seems to affect me most when there are multiple peaks and troughs, either that or steep, uneven descents. The tussocky/boggy shite certainly doesn't help, haha!

That looked braw mate, plane wreckages are always fasinating but somber places to visit. So many of them across the UK. Gotta love the bog. 😆

@outlawedlandscapes 3 года назад
Thanks Robin, they were the first I've seen & whilst they were interesting to see, the difference between the two (the shredded fuselage vs the melted fuselage) really made me stop & consider what it must have been like. The bog is good for the wildlife, but shite for walking, haha!

@@outlawedlandscapes I reckon Beinn Eighe has the most impressive wreckage. Even a gully is named after it, Fuselage Gully. Nicola and I visited one near Garloch, engine sticks out the loch.

@@WalkWithWallace That's in my top five for when the restrictions are lifted! I believe that's where MTR's originated, when the RAF formed their own to find the site.

Another superb brilliantly put together vlog...very informative...ive bagged almost 200 Hills now in Scotland but only a hand full of Munros mostly Donalds in Southern Scotland prefering the more unorthodox stuff away from the crowds.

Thanks Andrew, appreciate it! Galloway is an absolute gold mine if you prefer a bit of solitude, haha! There’s a very definite sense of remoteness/wilderness out there, especially around the Dungeon Hills. I’m setting my sights on Arran/Arrochar now as I’ve covered the majority of Galloway, but I’ll still be back here and there 😁

@@RockStar67 Fantastic 😁 I’ve only managed up as far as the Applecross Corbetts / Torridon, but aye, wow, totally different ballgame! The landscape is just INCREDIBLE! If you haven’t been, Arran is one of the closest things to “Alpine” that we have. Absolutely jaw dropping views and surrounded my the deep blue 😍

Excellent video just subscribed. Iam planning on doing a wildcamp on the awful hand. Parking at Stincher falls and going up the Merrick and probably coming back of it and camping either at loch Enoch or Kirriereoch hill. If it was Kirriereoch hill can you suggest we're is best to collect water for the camp ?
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 3 года назад
Thanks Steven & welcome to the channel! That sounds like a great trip - you could also consider parking at Kirriereoch Loch & heading up Shalloch from there - gives you a nice linear route & you can return to the car straight from the Merrick or Kirriereoch. Have a look at the maps, there are escape routes down to the same forestry road from every hill! If you're camping on Kirriereoch then I'd definitely recommend collecting from the burn that drops off of the col between Kirriereoch & the Merrick. It's clear, clean & tastes fantastic as opposed to the peaty bogs along the way.

It's hard to get perspective; until the scene where you are walking next to the river and you are on the upside of a little gorge....makes you "see" the hills differently. Do you have a flexible brace to wear on your knee when walking? Uneven surfaces are just hell on bad knees, and squishy bog... not so wonderful. Really appreciated the message: if the people you are with aren't supportive of what is best for you... find new people... Spot on. Thanks for the video, give your amazing dog a pat for us.

Hi Gabi, you're very welcome & I'm glad you enjoyed it! The Galloway Hills are surprising in terms of sheer scale, you really have to walk them in order to appreciate it :) I do have a brace, I often put it on as I start ascending as it really helps but for some reason that days ascent/descent took its toll - the Galloway ground is treacherous in places but fantastic practice for the Northern hills which I hope to explore asap!
