Long time ago - 1988! As a 1st time visitor,I had my trumpet mouthpiece in my pocket. King's Head had a poster in the window Sunday "jazz at 3:30" I was there from the beginning. At the break I sat next to the trombone player at the bar. Asking if I could sit in, he found me a horn and I played C Jam Blues . . .then many more. They invited me to their gig in Ballyvaughan the next night. There's so much more to the story . . . . . . .

If I had my way I'd be there for NYE tomorrow night, delighting in that absolutely joyous music, the wonderful Irish hospitality and warmth and loving EVERY BLOODY MINUTE of it. One day. One day with a bit of luck and a following wind 😀 👍 xx

This Galway/music/Ireland series is great. It brings memories flooding back of a trip there some years ago. Top marks for the no nonsense informed commentary too.

I experienced gallway just a few months after the Easter accords. An experience I will cherish unto my dying days. My wife made the mistake of trying to pet the swans down on the beach. Lol swans may be mute but their anger at being disturbed was as plain as day. Never met an animal she didn’t think was a friend lol. Beautiful times.

The King's Head is the best pub in Galway! Get in early and grab the table at the front window you can watch the bar and street at the same time! 😀

Irish pubs, giving a new meaning to mutual destruction...

I visited Galway some weeks ago and I was really disappointed by it actually, should be said that I was only there during daytime tho but still. Galways felt like it was just one big single street where everything was, outside of that street it was rather dead...apart from Dublin where you can walk for 10 blocks and still find a small pub with live music Galway just felt so centered on that single street which was a bit disapponting, I was exptecting it to be branched out like Dublin but in smaller scale which was not at all the feeling I got, I was actually bored with it after just a few hours and took an earlier train home. With that said I might have to spend a night there to also see it from the perspective of the nightlife to get a fair view of it but I don't think I will visit again in anytime soon

I live here…if I never hear another bloody fiddle-player it will be too soon 😬

Sorry, but you are wrong... Trad musicians don't just "improvise as they go". That would lead to a very unpleasant cacophony with so many different instruments. I'm a trad musician myself, I play the Uilleann Pipes. What you hear at a trad session are tunes, some of them very old tunes. A good session musician has a huge reportoir of tunes. And that's how playing at a session works: a musician with a melody instrument starts a so called set, wich consists usually of three tunes, each tune repeated three times. So a musician starts with a tune and if you know it you play along, after three times you stop to listen for the next tune in the set and again, if you know it you play along, if not, you don't. Usually when a group of musicians play regularly for a long period of time, they are building up a common reportoir. The reportoir can vary between different sessions in the same town. There are also regional tunes, that are mostly played in the region they are originating from, but that's kinda dying out due to the technological connection, if that makes sense. You don't have to travel to a certain region to hear its tunes. Sorry if there are some mistakes, I'm german...
