Game 1 Reaction: Stars fall 4-3 to VGK | Shaky start proves costly, adjustments must be made!

The Dallas Stars fall to the Vegas Golden Knights in game 1 by a final score of 4-3. The Stars came out flat in the first period and the Knights struck three times, including twice on the power play. Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson scored in the period to cut the deficit to one heading into the 2nd. The Stars out shot the Knights in the middle period, but failed to pierce through Logan Thompson who started in net for the VGK. Jake Oettinger was not very busy in the final two periods, but Vegas made his life tough on their goals. Joey breaks down game 1 and why Vegas was so successful and why he even has some optimizing moving forward in the series. It's no question the Stars will need more from Thomas Harley, Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Matt Duchene if they want to beat Vegas at full strength. They will also have to make adjustments in their defensive zone exits and the way they attack Vegas. The Knights blocked 20 shots and forced a ton of shot attempts from the perimeter by Dallas. The Stars must find a way to win in front of both nets if they want to have a chance in the series. We will see what kind of
response Dallas has in game two on Wednesday night.

@@coreyo1289 More than that. VGK has dealt with Pete DeBoer’s offensive framework in all of their first six postseasons (whether via facing SJ/DAL or by having DeBoer behind the bench). The idea that being intimately familiar with that system is helping them defend against it is not at all unreasonable.

The 1st period Stars felt sleepy but 2/3 looked a lot better, kept the VGK in their defensive zone much of the time. I think game 2 will go to the Stars.

I think the reason the stars kept the VGK in their zone is because after the goal in the second period they switched from a 3-1-1 to a 1-2-2 line and just hyper defense for 40 minutes. this next game can go either way

Vegas is no 8th seed...and they were ahead so they just shut down on scoring to control using the d. That goal on Thompson in the 3rd was a fluke.

Lets be real here. Deboer is responsible for how his team plays. No one wants to talk about poor coaching but Deboer, in my opinion is too laid back!! Its disgusting how often the Stars begin games looking like they are not ready for competition or even care about winning.

I think it's rather telling that the Golden Knights were not too upset about losing at home to a very bad Ducks team so they can draw the Stars in the first round rather then play the Oilers. In the postseason, it's all about having the mental edge and that is something Las Vegas has over the Stars. Game 2 is a MUST win. If the Stars don't win, they can forget about playing any more home games for the rest of this season. I'm tired of this "frontrunning" mentality from our teams in this town, outside the Rangers.... thankfully.

Oettinger has the ability to play between the pipes at a high elite level of play. He usually turns it on after the first game, he was facing a lot of screens that Logan Thompson wasn’t dealing with in the game. Thompson could see everything clearly coming at him. Vegas also completely shut down the middle of the ice so Dallas had to shoot from the outside. Debore is not afraid to switch the lines up if something isn’t working or goalies either if one of them isn’t performing well. I hope they come out ready to play in game 2 because they didn’t look fully ready to play hockey 🏒.

The Stars are the only home team to lose Game 1 in the postseason so far. A very Dallas thing to do (except the 2023 Texas Rangers, thankfully).

I think game 2 is a must win. Honestly, we outplayed them most of the game. Oettinger struggled but at least if not 3 of those goals he was left out to dry. PK needs to be better.

Where was the physicality. Dallas got pushed around. These short passes to get the puck of the defensive zone just kills Dallas. Use the boards, take an icing, something.

@@hotdogstandman the VGK does that a lot, shot totals will be low but they’ll be very high danger; Stars got caught sleeping on them in the 1st tbh. VGK also got blown out of the water last year in their 1st game too like 5-1 and then went on to win the whole thing.

@@Archangel1994 Was a good game.. shaky goaltending. Dallas got a weak one too. It's probabky a bad thing that I was happy dallas played good because I was watching the game thinking.. Vegas is huge and all of a sudden I'm looking at that same damn Vegas team from last year that might once again be the clear best team and if dallas can't beat them... I dont know who can.. its only game 1 though. Were used to losing game 1.

They were the better team. They allowed 15 shots, but gave up 4 goals on that. I think Vegas was fine giving up many of those shots as a majority of them were easily seen. Vegas just has to clean up a bit and they will be fine. Block 4 more shots in a game and Vegas will do better.

Last year they lost the 1st game against SEA and MINN. The world has not ended over one game. The 1st period dictated that entire game. It will not be the same in game 2.

Wow, let’s not get all negative, let’s see where the Stars stand after 3games! Hold off on painting a negative picture or creating a self fulfilling prophecy, after one game! VGN came out hitting hard, definitely focusing on certain players, or so it seemed. Stars have to play their game, not take penalties! VGN goalie played better and the stars looked hungrier 2 & 3 period. Imagine if that first goal was allowed? Let’s focus on tomorrow night and what can be improved upon and not project the worst, the Stars need our support! Go Stars ⭐️ Go!!

That’s what Stone taking time off grants you. The ability to pick up three players at the trade deadline. Then magically his 8 month recovery is over and he’s ready to go for game 1 of the 1st round. Just like Pietrangelo and Carrier magically recovered.

Tell me I’m overreacting… we aren’t winning this series. They let a inferior LV team own them tonight with less than 15 shots on goal. They lacked discipline to their game, couldn’t do anything offensively against a mediocre net minder, and were the only home team to drop their first game. I knew this shit was gonna happen.

Otter certainly did not appear to have the eye of the tiger. I know he’s known for bouncing back, but I would rather see consistency. Otters play and the physical play overall I think will determine the series.

@@ericespinoza7789 You can't afford your netminder to have "crap" games if you have any hope of winning a Stanley Cup. Consistency is absolutely key, but he has never been that. Aside from a handful of better performances towards the end of the season, this has been his worst year on record both by the stats but also the eye test. He has been outright bad for too long, yet for some reason avoids a lot of criticism despite costing the teams more wins than he earns them. Jake isn't it, and frankly never was. The hype around Miro and Robertson with Oettinger being in the same draft class has earned him plaudits that he's frankly never earned. I mean apart from one crazy series against Calgary (which we still lost), what has he ever done to convince anyone that he's an elite netminder? Nothing.

WHAT is it gonna take for this team to come to the rink prepared to own a game from opening puck drop?! Every team knows the first period is this team's achilles heel so they are all going to come out hard and fast to snag an early lead. Home ice is pointless for the Stars, given their track record. I'm placing responsibility on PDB and his team captains to get this shit figured out so they don't get swept. Put Dadonov back on Duchy's line. Or sit Dadonov and get Smith back on Line 4. This is no time for the line blender. And don't dare start another game with the fourth line. Really bad idea. Line 3 should be starting games against their Line 4. Period. Plenty of poor choices tonight from a coaching standpoint. Not impressed. Lastly, 7:33 for Nils tonight. If he isn't trusted, bring Pouliot in. PDB at least will say he trusts Pouliot. (DID they assume no-one would claim Hanley off waivers?!)
