Using the Blackberry Q10 screen, this kit is very similar to its Q5 based predecessors with nearly all the same features. First of many using this screen I figure.
You'll want to get a shell molded to fit a laminated Q5 based kit for this. Funnyplaying makes plenty and they're fantastic for this. The "Starfield" style printed shell I used currently only comes on shells made for Funnyplaying's FPGA GBC which is why I swapped the back panel out. If you get a printed shell, be aware of which model GBC it is for because the backs are different!

Makho warns us not to swap to newer backlit kits because the ones we already own likely are as good, but he never warns us not fall into the rabbit hole of buying bunches of gbc to mod using the fire shells he's always showcasing. Happened to me with the cyberpunk shell and it might happen again with this one.

The power consumption with pixel grid should be lower, because only 9 instead of 16 pixel are lightning up by itself (no common backlight with oled). Thats how oled usually works, black pixel are just off.

This is the most nit-picky thing ever but I wish one of the logo light color options was like the old IPS kits that have the “Game Boy” in white and “Color” in the original 5 color letter design.

Buy Q5 instead.. I have both Q5 and Q10(OLED). Q5 have exactly what you want. It is that good.

@@Rurounik99 I bought a FP Q5 display last year :) It doesn't have color desaturation, colors are too intense compared to an original GBC screen. Or are you talking about a new Q5 revision that now has this feature?

I think for me a laminated screen would be most important. I can learn how to solder, even if it scares me, but if I put the screen on wrong I'll lose my mind XD

is the monochrome color mode useful for original gameboy games? for example pokemon red, i think the red and green default palette and most of the optional button combo palettes look bad. is this actually a useful mode for that?

hey bro can you post a link the tape insulation you used ? or go more in depth with why and where needs to be protected like make a separate video going over and more in depth possibly showing you also trimming the pins or something thank you i enjoy your videos gained a sub!

It's just polyamide tape. Brand name is kapton. The pins are proud on the board so you need to take steps to ensure that they don't contact anything. It was a much bigger issue with older kits and I've recycled this board so that's why it was already done. If you use the included insulation film with the kit, trimming and covering the pins is unnecessary.

You should get more than 30 minutes. Check your batteries and probably clean your power switch.

As someone who's modified regular shells and crystal clear shells to fit laminated screens, yeah, it's awful. Looks good, but -50/10 don't ever recommend lol

Cool, but if you compare Q5 IPS displays to pretty much any other IPS you have lying around, you'll find they're pretty amazing to begin with. OLED is a step into overkill.

I have the same case with the funnyplaying motherboard and the metal buttons. How did you get the membrane to fit over the start and select buttons? My membrane over the start and select does not fit over the metal buttons because they protrude way to high and it's hard to keep it balanced - did manage to put it in, but the buttons were super stiff and did not register start and select. Any ideas?

Lol I didn't have an old FP kit but a one chip one that had ghosting and then I had the ips v3 kits which I'm going to taking the motherboards from and update to a q5 kit I have laying around so I don't have to worry about it causing me any more headaches (since constantly had issues with the ips v3 kits always breaking things).

Either I got a defective screen or I messed something up because my screen refuses to turn on. I can see the light on and hear the sound but nothing for the screen. Did everything step by step, took everything apart and tried again multiple times and nada.

that black bar is because the pwm modulation, that could affect the eyes strain negatively old oleds have max 240mhz in high brightness and 120 in low. ips panels can have pwm but the valor is high enough that dont affect your eyes. Im sensitive to low pwm in oleds and i cant use any device with oled screen unless they have high modulation or local screen dimming . Sadly is not information of the pwm of this screen i tried to research and i come empty handed.

Not gonna lie, the lower power consumption is actually the most enticing thing in this kit. Probably gonna wait for other kits tho - maybe they would actually implement color adjustments?

I had high hopes that this one screen would finally implement desaturated colours… but alas, it wasn’t to be. I will keep my RetroPixel 2.0 screen in the meantime - hopefully some screen implementing it will come out soon. Great vid as always, thank you!

OC won’t make a kit with desaturated colors until they can copy someone else. They’ll add it once Funnyplaying does.

This doesn't work in the FPGBC. Funnyplaying is making one that will take one of these OLEDs but Q10 displays have never been interchangeable with Q5 displays.

Unless someone makes a separate screen mod just for adapting this screen panel to be used with the FPGBC, I wouldn’t bet on it working since I can’t imagine it’s drop-in with something meant to only use the Q5 IPS screen. Maybe if FP starts using the Q10 OLED screens and releases an update to get it working on the FPGBC.

SUPER AMOLED is far better than any other OLED technologies, perhaps QD Oled might beat it depending on the case. Now slapping an OLED display inside a console made for LCDs has crossed the line for me... OLEDs are nice for 4:3 machines that would replicate CRT displays in combination with the right filters but simulating the LCD look is an other story.
