Follow up video to test if there's a similar CPU-06 bug in the OLED kit since I used a CPU-06 board (with Rev E CPU) in my original install.
Older video for an obsolete kit but that probably explains this issue a little bit too: • [OBSOLETE KIT] Game Bo...
TL;DW -- I was unable to reproduce any issues with either a CPU-02 or CPU-04 board (Rev B and D CPUs respectively) and my normal power usage testing is largely invalid for OLED devices due to the variance in draw depending on the specific content of the screen.

It's possible the issue I was told about is exclusive to CPU-01 boards with REV A CPUs but since I don't have one, I cannot confirm. I assumed it was a similar issue as what the 9380 kits were experiencing but since this OLED kit works fine on CPU-02 and 04 boards with REV B and D CPUs respectively, it seems that the issue is unrelated. Additionally, the kit maker tested this issue too. They did have a CPU-01 board but they did not have the same games so it's still not ruled out. Perhaps the original issue was just an improperly seated connector? The initial issue was forwarded to the kit maker and this was their reply: We test the GBC 01 motherboard with 6 different kind of game cards We cannot repeat the issue you mentioned Currently we did not have the same game card as your video. We will buy it and test them once we get the new game cards.

Thank you for the feedback - I've been trying to find others with a CGB CPU A so we can try to reproduce the issue!

That cart pcb you used towards the end of the video at the 28min mark, is that a Makho exclusive thing or is that available somewhere? Looks very handy.

have you tried turning off the gameboy color logo for the power draw test?

Hey, could you link me to more info about his issue? Maybe some images or description of what happens? I think I might be experiencing the issue in question. I have a CGB-CPU-03 with REV C CPU. For me, the horizontal pixels seem to shift left a few seconds after first power on. I can fix it temporarily by turning the system off and on about three times and then the picture stays stable. But it comes back after not playing for a while.

You should record the symptoms and post to the Game Boy discord or subreddit

Curious if you found a fix for this. I have the same board but my screen won't be here for a few weeks. I'll let you know if I run into the same issue.

I can confirm I don't run into this pixel drift on my CGB-CPU-03/Rev C CPU board.

I did this mod and own the Japanese version of Kirby tilt n tumble and I haven’t had any issues with it. I can’t remember what type of motherboard I have in it though.

What’s battery life with OLED?

About an hour or two better than with the Q5 with the extra power wire installed.
@makho

That depends quite heavily on your batteries, the games you’re playing, and the settings on your kit. I’ve measured the power usage before and after the kit so you can extrapolate with my numbers if you want.

Hey everyone.this is a random question but I struggle to find help does anyone know how I can dim the power led of a moded GBC it's kinda to bright 😅
@kingju1ius

i would just add tape to the interior of the LED indicator window so that the light can be diffused and/or toned down. (ive never modded a gameboy, but this seems logical)

Makho, could you make a video creating a GBC or GBA with your most favorite mods? :)
@makho
@makho 2 месяца назад
Short answer: No Long answer: I already did. I prefer minimal electrical mods. My preference is to stop at case mods and a backlight kit only. Maybe I'll get fancy and add in a replacement power management circuit to bypass the shitty power switch on these consoles and add soft-latching. The "ULTIMATE GAME BOY" builds are a total meme and rarely result in a good experience. The people you see doing builds like this are doing it for engagement, not because the end result is actually good.

i wouldnt bother. funnyplaying has a high defect rate and this kit is already so good.

@@kingju1ius You raise a good point. I've had several screens from them and haven't had to return any, but some have had light bleed issues despite being 'laminated'. I was able to fit a piece of paper down the side of one of their panels that was supposed to be laminated. I had to use electrical tape to seal it properly.

Follow up: Until we prove this by having others reproduce it, take this with a pinch of salt as stated in Makho's pinned comment Please test CGB CPU A; we have a troubleshooting post opened by someone that has issues with that CPU rev. When sprites are displayed it causes a couple of pixels of offset for tiles on that scanline. I know that clock timing was altered between some of the CPU revs.

@ZippletTech as in my message in the troubleshooting post on discord, I can confirm this issue occurs with my CPU CGB A board too.

From my personal experience, boards 03 & 04 are the most common with CPU C & D. For me 03 D is solid, never had issues. The problem was with CPU C and under had issues. D up had no issues. 03 could have C or D depending on date manufacture.
