Game Boy (Color) RTC Flash Cart Power Usage and write times 

I spent about a year working on an open-source MBC3 cart design, and I remember trying to use a CPLD or an FPGA to replace that custom MBC3 chip. I was (and still am) an amateur when it comes to electrical engineering, but was able to program all of the behavior EXCEPT for the real-time clock. Nintendo didn't use any kind of standard for their real time clock, just a big binary counter. Re-creating this circuit takes up a LOT of space on a chip. Choosing a chip then becomes a balancing act: -must have low power consumption -must have enough capacity for the real-time clock circuit -must use correct voltage, OR we need a power efficient regulator It starts to make sense why Nintendo made a custom chip for this. I think a lot of problems could be alleviated if we could edit the ROM to use Binary-Coded Decimal (BCD) for the real-time clock, which is what modern Real-Time Clock chips use. Then, we could have a dedicated RTC chip to store the time, and our PLD could read/write it as necessary. We would use less power, because RTC chips consume almost nothing, and we could probably get away with using a smaller PLD. Then we could finally get rid of the MBC3 chip for good. It's also a little discouraging doing all this work while the EverDrive GB X7 exists. It's a great product, and it makes all of this work feel a bit pointless. There's still a niche for single-game flash carts, but that niche feels like it's shrinking all the time.

Been 3 weeks since you posted! Any chance you're gonna tear down your Steam Deck and do a stream swapping the shell with one of the new extremerate shells? Amazon reviews seemed decent on them.

Mr. Makho, what do you think about the Retrosix GBA cleanscreen? Will you bother to review it or is the company too unscrupulous to deal with? I heard it can replicate the original GBA colours (you can make Golden Sun not-green) and it seems to have other great features.
