I picked up a rare Game Boy Light from Japan. It's got a bad screen with a burned polarizer. I show you how to replace the polarizer and get this working properly again.

@@RetroRepairs The board also labels the pads as EL and if you look one of them goes to the metal square right in the middle labeled T1, Transformer. EL panels usually require about 100v AC so they are high powered little things. When I saw you putting you fingers on there I was ready to see you get shocked.

I sincerely doubt anyone in your middle school had a gb light. These were Japanese exclusive and with 1998 internet you couldn't easily import one online.

The glue might be in the ballpark of acrylate (super glue) or an acrylic epoxy.. If so, acetone is probably the solvent to try. But you have to be careful to make sure it doesn't get on anything else, especially plastic.

You could try hydro-dipping the shell. It’s way more durable than paint and I believe pretty cheap to do these days. Should cover up those scratches as well :)

I swear i had agameboy light when I was like 9 back on the early 90s. I saw it. My mom is from Queens NYC so when we visted family every year for xmas we would get gifts. I got a GB light to replace my OG GB. Didnt know it wasnt in America. I remember be amazed by the backlight. I about a year or so later the GB SP came out that had a flip sceen.

A bit of acetone with it and it may be more effective against the goo.

Heptane will take the adhesive off WAY better than IPA. It causes the adhesive to lose tack, rather than dissolve. Safe to use on electronics. Makes you light headed if you breathe it in though. Might not work all that well with the optical lens glue.

I think the adhesive is LOCA, or liquid optically clear adhesive. I'm glad to k ow you can scrap it with a blade, I've done with a q tip and it's hell. Next one I do, I'm going to try using hepstane as the adhesive removed instead of IPA. Let's hope it makes it easier 🙏

Yh I saw after I got back from over seas 99% alcohol is like $15+ yet I got mine for $6 in December. I bought the MG Chemicals large spray can for $15 on Amazon. Apparently the spray bottles last way way way longer than normal IPA bottle.

I usually just search "video games not working" on ebay and some stuff comes up, mostly discs, but if you look hard enough you can find cartridges.

Are there any 3rd-party shells for Game Boy Light? I feel like something with its color molded into the plastic would fare better in terms of wear & tear compared to dealing with scratched paint of the original.

As of June 2022, there are now replacement shells available from Ali. They are apparently really good quality. As far as I know there are the clear and clear yellow versions available but not yet the gold/silver.

Do you think a lower percentage alcohol would have let water and alcohol soak into the residue deeper? I know 99% is usually better in electronics because it evaporates quicker, but this looks like a situation where you'd actually want it to stick around a bit longer and soak in.

Goo gone might work better to remove that adhesive. Just have to spray it down with alcohol to clean that off when finished.

The problem with stuff like Goo Gone and Naphtha is the high likelihood it would start to eat away at the adhesives holding the glass together. And acetone is purely the most wrong choice one could make to clean anything around plastics.

Im pretty sure you are supposed to use the other kind of polarizing film. I think it’s called circular. There’s a thread about this on reddit. Dmg uses the one used in this video but gbp, gbl and gbc, apparently used a circular polarizing film.

Maybe, but I'd never use it on a display. I wouldnt want to risk separating the adhesive holding the glass layers together. Rather put in a bit extra work that take the quick route and potentially ruin it

It's not a burn from a soldering iron. I'm not sure exactly what causes it, but could be sunlight or heat warping the filter. It's extremely common with early handhelds
