@@JoeBleeps That'd be awesome! The thing I'm most curious about is how you ended up mounting the side switch to change which signal gets used. I ordered parts to set one up similarly, but I'm just a tad bit hesitant to relying on hot glue for a long-term solution haha. The other thing was which DPDT switch you ended up using, as I've found a few but I'm not too sure on how easily they'd be able to be used once installed.

This is a great video! Can't find much on RU-vid about audio mods apart from amps, so this has really taught me a lot. I'm a bit of a circuitry noob, but what kind of slide switch do you use for the post pot & pre pot switch and where can I get them from?
@JoeBleeps
@JoeBleeps 3 года назад
It was a really small one, any should do. I often use ebay for stuff like that. This one had two rows of three pins so it's like an on/on Switch to swap between states. Having two rows meant I could swap between pre and post for two inputs at the same time, if that makes sense. It's not a mod I've seen done before and it's far from essential but it was fun to do!

Hi, I've got a question about doing a, "internal" sound mod: do you know of any ways to amp up the audio-jack as well as the speaker, bypassing the original DMG amp? From what I can find, you can do an "internal"-mod wher you add an amp board (eg. retrosix have those), but those are just for amping up the speaker. However, I'd like to amp up both the speaker & the jack, while making sure you the jack cuts off the sound to the speaker when plugged in.
@JoeBleeps
@JoeBleeps 3 года назад
I'd point you in the direction of www.heldergametech.com/ who posts as angryhelder on Instagram and Twitter. They did a lot of the work that R6 copied and make reliable products with a great reputation. They are also very helpful and will most likely be able to answer your questions. I use an external mixer to boost the sound but I can see how an internal amplifier would be useful.

Would love to have some video about the variable clock mod (thursday customs used to have them, and some month ago I get some from handheld legend). I.e. could we build our own, how to we fit the existing ones into a IPS and pro sound modded DMG shell. Also sometimes pushing the buttons on these things will crash your processor and I read somewhere that this could be circumvented by using a rocker switch instead of a button.

I am wondering if you could implement a switch to change between the internal pro sound, and using the headphone jack as it comes stock. That would be an interesting middle ground for those who still like to make music through headphones, as well as play live.
@JoeBleeps
@JoeBleeps 2 года назад
It's doable for sure, essentially you'd have two wires to disconnect/ reconnect at a time. Would work better if you soldered to the points where you removed the two wires instead. I've found that to be not quite as good for the prosound but it does work, and would be better suited to the switch. I personally have no problems with using headphones after the prosound mod. Quieter, yes, but much cleaner sound.

Hey Joe! Great video, I had no idea that the internal pro sound option existed! I have just two questions 1. You said that the internal pro sound mod makes the sound quieter, does it still get loud enough for personal headphone use outside of recording? 2. Where's the best place to get those little wires to solder the connections?
@ConnorBaxter
@ConnorBaxter 2 года назад
It gets quieter with headphones due to the signal not being amplified as much for the headphones to drive them. it's still audible and useable in quiet settings. but it lacks some of the oomph, bass, and volume for me generally if i'm on a train etc. through an amplifier or mixer, it sounds so much better though!! I think the easiest compromise is having a seperate jack for Prosound, and keep the headphone jack for when you're writing on the go with headphones. just my experience.

This video is perfect. I learned so much and feel confident I can do something like this to meet my needs. I guess one question I have is if I do the internal pro sound mod and bypass the internal amp and just use headphones that are really low ohm. Will it be audible enough to play comfortabley or would I need an amp. My main goal is to bypass the hiss/hum it drives me crazy. I tried doing this cap mod to and that worked a little but I still get alot of hum and hiss. I guess you would be unable to answer my question without knowing what headphones I'm using so I guess my question is, is how much does the original GB amp actually amp the volume?
@JoeBleeps
@JoeBleeps 3 года назад
It's definitely quieter than before through headphones but it's cleaner, so you can hear it more clearly at the lower volume. I use headphones with it and I prefer it to the original headphone input

@@JoeBleeps Great thanks. Just to clarify I use the IPS screen mod so maybe that introduces alot of hiss/hum from the power board? I'm not an expert on this stuff maybe ill try cutting some wires and do the prosound mod I got the stuff for it so maybe I'll try that.

@@JoeBleeps Went ahead and did the post pot method with the original jack and it sounds perfect I'm so happy, there's a tiny bit but its nothing and only audible with max volume. It works perfect with my RIPS V3 and I got the filtering cap mod into the power board the (470uf 16v cap) and that got rid of most of speaker audio to be happy with. It's still there but not as bad as before or my headphones before. Unfortunately the speaker still hums a little even when pot is all the way down. Would be cool to have the pot switch the speaker off like what happens when the headphones are in but when the pot is at a really low volume. That would legitimately make it perfect.

@JoeBleeps thanks for this video! I learnt a lot of things! I've just some questions on the switch: it is not clear (at least to me) how to solder it and the pre-post pot to the other components. 1. Could you please explain more how to properly connect everything? (how did you done on yours? What did you precisely connected? (pad, components...)) Is there any pinout available? 2. What does LOut and ROut means? Left Output and Right Output, of course, but what you exactly mean? Maybe the RCA? 3. I also don't understand if am I allowed to solder all the jacks and also a PS/2 Jack Keyboard to use it as synth. Is it possible? If yes, how to do it? Thanks for your patience and your time!
@JoeBleeps
@JoeBleeps 3 месяца назад
Okay that's a lot to unpack. I am glad you enjoyed it! 1 - if you're just starting out I would suggest the "internal prosound" mod. No extra parts needed, just some wires. The other options are fun but this is the one I always do as it's clean looking and sounds great despite being a simple job. I have other videos that explain this, I can point you in the direction of these if you need me to. 2 - Yes left and right outputs. These are the connection points to join up to the left and right connector on an audio socket you'll be connecting your cable to. 3 - yes it's possible to do as many jacks as you want and do the PS/2 mod as well, there is just more work involved. the PS/2 mod allows you to connect an external keyboard and use the game boy as a synth but to be honest I've only used it for that when testing these mods. It's not as much fun as actually creating sounds and sequencing them in LSDJ
@prototype_925
@prototype_925 3 месяца назад
@@JoeBleeps Thanks by heart for your answers! I did and prefer external prosound mod because I'd like to preserve the headphone jack even if unfortunately the external one requires trimming the shell. So I'd like to try the switch mod with RCA+JACK, in order to have the best of every possible combination (even if I'd like to add a 6.4 Jack too, but I don't know if there is enough room, I've seen your other videos). I only have one final question: I've carefully rewatched this video, and the only other thing I didn't understand is the ground pin and components. I'm not sure, but you say something like "after soldering everything in this way with the switch, every other component "-" should be soldered to the ground pin" So, in my opinion, let's say I have RCA and Jack: I need to solder the "ground" part of each of them to that specific ground pin in audio pot part. (I don't honestly know if it is a good idea, because it would become a mess with cables, so every gnd point on the motherboard should be fine) Do I have correctly got what you meant (solder every "-" on components to gnd points on the motherboard and every "+" on components to the switch) or did you mean something else?

Why don't you just remove the original headphone jack and put the new one there instead of drilling a new hole to the shell?

The internal prosound is pretty much that. I can't see much benefit to swapping the parts out though.

Hey there, great video! I found a DMG mod kit called "PureSound + BassBoost" by "Revive to Relive" and it consists of 3 electrolytic capacitors ("replace the old two capacitors with the new ones and solder an additional capacitor to the DC CONV"). This seems to be a much simpler mod - any thoughts on this?

That sounds interesting, the capacitors will serve to emphasise the bass. The mod I'm doing here is mainly to provide a clearer sound and then I use a mixer to adjust levels such as bass. It's fun to try different mods though!
