Its great but Im not liking the fact that is creates a new channel in 360 console each time, and these cannot be grouped or foldered in any way, you end up with a LOT of console channels ;-) also it scans every single plugin including synths / drums etc
@@Newmusicreviewyes if you have multiple link plugins on a single channel that is what you get I guess. I do not intend to use it this way though, just one Link plugin in every channel so I can use the plugin mixer layer. Probably not even going to put another effects plugin in there.
Thank you so much!, I had no idea this was possible, and I also had no idea you could add to all channels at once using that keyboard shortcut! thank you
A tip for anyone who doesn't have the desk space for the SSL hardware. If you are considering a second monitor then go for a touch screen. Dedicate 360 app to the touch screen. You can interact directly with each channel. This is as close as you'll get to mimicking the feel of mixing on a console. Congrats to SSL great software
Thanks so much for this video. I have a UF1 and had seen the 360 plug-in but didn’t fully understand what a difference this makes. I love the graphic eq and compression reading I now get on screen. You made everything a lot clearer with this video. Thanks again.
I've been looking forward to this video :). And I always look forward to "Let's go!". The UF1 looks very nice, especially the meters. It seems like Eucon will always have some advantages over Mackie as a protocol for a control surface though. For example, it doesn't need the inconvenient plugin to do track selection and plugin editing and it handles different kinds of tracks.
@@LanewoodStudios the Avid Dock? I just got into the EUCON ecosystem with an old Artist Control and it really has the edge on some (not all) features over the MCU protocol. Especially, as you mention the Resolve Speed Editor, with EUCON you can slip / trim in & out / fade in & out with the jog wheel as you can in Resolve. A cheap way into that is to get an Artist Transport.
@@LanewoodStudios AVID is pretty bad at showing off their products but form what I gather EUCON works on most tablets: Android / Amazon & Apple. Still, I agree, with the tablet this is too big. Even the Artist Transport is quite big.
@@LanewoodStudios Thanks for the video :) I use the Avid Dock with Cubase but more expensive and far too big with an ipad. I guess it's now time to get an UF-1 :)
I also work in cubase and I can 100% confirm that I don't have any tracking issues the the way you're showing in this video uf1 follows all channels perfectly ( with or without plugins) and switches between banks automatically, while uf 1 can only follow channels that have ssl channel strip or ssl link plugin on them. the way I used them the way I use it is to use uf1 for switching between channels in cubase if I have multiple link link plugins on 1 channel I use uc1 chanell knob in extended mode ( that you enter by pressing the left arrow near the channel knob) that channel knob switches between SSL link plugins our channel strip and it even shows the name of the plugin on the uc1 display. you just have to set it up.
I don't have a UC1 myself but that should not be a significant difference in the 'Follow selected track' issue. If you select a track with your mouse in Cubase, outside of the currently selected bank on the UF1, the track will be selected in Cubase but not on the UF1. SSL also states that that will not work due to the Mackie MCU implementation in Cubase, and some other DAWS; check it out over here: support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track#follow-selected-track-0-0 If you somehow got it working, I wonder what the difference is.
@@LanewoodStudios That's the thing I also don't know I had UF-1 and it also didn't follow outside the bank range, the chanell wheel also behaved strange when you went up the channels 1-20 it stopped on the last channel and i had to switch bank manually, when I went down the channels for 20-1 it automatically switched banks. Then I bought UC-1 and after trying out multiple things it works fine, although selecting chanell outside the range with the mouse doesn't always work but sometimes it definitely does. it switches both uc1, uf1 and bank range. I have enabled plugin mixer layer and midi cc layer and played with them (assigned functions). I still didn't have the time to try replicating it on another computer.
The bank issue is the same with other single fader controllers too, not just the SSL UF-8, the Behringer X Touch does the same thing, a bank of 8 which has to be moved along, this is a limitation of the protocol
Yes I kind of understood that too but I remember seeing "somewhere" that it was working ok in Logic and Reaper for example. So I was a bit cautious mentioning it like that in the video :). Here is the summary of SSL: support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track But when you're talking Cubase, yes I guess it is the same thing with all control surfaces unless they have a dedicated protocol like Eucon.
There are some older single fader controllers like the Presonus Fader Port that do follow track select using the Mackie protocol. I’m really not sure why SSL can’t get it to work. I also don’t know why they don’t tack advantage of the MIDI controller scripts.
@@newtype-tv I’ve heard some mixed info on the Presonus Faderport so unsure whether that can now follow track selection. As for the midi remote scripts, not sure if that would provide all of the functionality for those SSL control surfaces. And they would have to make it for Cubase specifically of course.
Just to add $.02 the 8-channel Bank IS a part of the MCU protocol, and all the dozen or so MCU controllers I've owned/used over the years have Channel and Bank Left & Right buttons. However, the real issue is how each DAW Implements the MCU protocol. Many have figured out how to implement it where the Single fader controllers follow the selected track b-directionally, so if you select with either the MCU or the Mouse, the other will follow. And if you are on say Channel 8 of an 8 channel bank, clicking the channel-right button will move to Channel 9 and the next bank of 8. If Cubase isn't doing this, send in a request to Steinberg.
@@G_handle that works if you move to the next bank on the UF1. It doesn’t work if you select track 9 in Cubase though. That does not change the bank and therefore the channel is not selected on the UF1.
I´m currently having an eye on these SSL controllers, so I binge-watched a lot of videos. I always thought and understood they come with a licence for their channel strips ( the 4k and the 9k) but according to you this seems not the case. I´m confused now... Oh... me bad: I just learned: The channel strips and the bus comp only come with the UC1... sorry for that! But Thank you for your great videos!
Great video. I’ve had all 3 units for ages and they have come quite a long way in the last year. I put the Meter plugin on my control room too. All 3 units have a big learning curve and that curve has changed a lot but with each update they seem to be bringing it all together.
@@LanewoodStudios one thing that bugs me a little is the custom shortcuts you can make in draw mode are not usable in 360 mode. I use the 1 and 2 buttons to goto the start of the project and the 1st locator. However in the last update they have allowed uf8 users to custom map nearly all buttons now so you have an extra 25 or so to play with on top of what was there before
@@Harrysound yes I configured those buttons for going to left and right locator on the UF1 but it does not work in plugin mixer mode. Perhaps after another update.
I use Steinberg CC121. The unfortunate reality with all of these types of controllers with mappable buttons is, it takes quite a while for muscle memory to build, and then if you get a different controller, it's gone. I find it's faster and easier to do most things with the keyboard and just map and slowly learn more hotkeys, which you can use forever. And a keyboard has a heck of a lot of keys, especially including modifier keys. Hundreds of functions available in a split second. I do use the hardware buttons for pulling up the channel and inst editors, automation buttons, and mute/solo, and a flying fader and pan control is obviously great, but no matter how much I use it, the mouse is just so much faster and more accurate for EQ and keyboard is faster for transport and most other things. SSL uc1 may be an exception if you like SSL Channel strips and I could see that being very quick if you put them on every channel, but I would not use uf1 to control plug-ins when I could just use the mouse. I think fixed buttons are okay. Mappable buttons are a pain. Keyboard shortcuts are fastest.
Hi. Having the same channel/bank issue with Behringer XTouch-one, but they didn't release a solution. Wish I can send it back, but a lot of time had passed until I noticed it. This one looks much better though. You can put the plugin on all of the channels by selecting all of them and clicking ALT-SHIFT when selecting the plugin. My favourite contorller so far is nob-control.
Yes I mention the shift-alt trick in the text on my video. Forgot to mention it so was done during editing. I guess the bank issue is just the way Cubase has implemented the Mackie protocol. But it affects quite a lot of other DAWs as well.
Thanks, very nice explanation of how this thing works. Just one thing: there is a row of dedicated buttons above the transport control, which also have shift functions. I was told you can use them for setting automation type, do loop on/off, show instrument editor etc. Do these buttons still work in plugin mixer mode?
Thanks! When you engage plugin mixer mode on the SSL UF1, the top row buttons are mapped to controls on the SSL plugin on your selected channel. They are then no longer for those more general Cubase functions that you can control when in the DAW control mode.
You did not mention if it can control the master volume channel? I have a presonus ioStation 24c and it does not control master ch I was thinking of getting the whole ssl 360 set uf8, and plug-in controller
@@DJ_ByPDipper ha frankly I do not even know, I’ll have to try it for you or someone else may reply. The fader of my stereo out channel is always at zero. I use a separate monitor controller for reducing volume if I need to.
Thanks for another great video 🙌🏻 I've got the UC1 and I've been toying with getting the UF1??? I use Reaper and Studio one which works well with the Faderport 1 I've got, so I don't know if the UF1 is worth the money. I think the 360° Link software wrapper for 3rd party plugins is cool, but they need to make it so the centre strip in the UC1 (which is usually the Bus Comp) is also assignable for 3rd party plugins 👍🏻
For Studio One the UF-1 is completely useless, despite their effort for implementing the link plugin (congrats SSL for this), which is clunky as hell. Nothing beats up the faderport at this stage, no banking issues, very straightforward. The UF-1 works flawlessly with Reaper though.
Begging for an answer as how to open (using either the UF8/UF1/UC1) the Edit Channel Setting function (you know the one that resemble a little "e"). Is there in fact a "button" for this on the SSL equipment previously mentioned? I LOVE my setup but that's the last thing I can't figure out. Many thanks to anyone who has the answer.
I was wondering about the following: What happens when using track visibility and only a part of the tracks are visible. For example only 1 and 5, 6, 7, out of 10 tracks are shown. When you scroll through the tracks with the device, does it follow the visible tracks or all the available tracks? This is still an issue with my AVID controllers and the EUCON protocol. It does not recognize the track visibility. How do both SSL360 mode and Mackie mode function with the device? Thanks!!
It's the same on the UF1 after a quick test. You still scroll through invisible tracks as well. Also for example tracks in a folder which has not been expanded in the project view.
Thanks for checking this! This will most likely be the same with the UF8 and is really unfortunate. Still something that is not resolved properly by the console developers. I wonder how others have adopted this shortcoming in their workflow.
I still have that question as well, because even though they mention this in release notes and they’ve demonstrated how to do this on UF8 I have not been able to find how to do this on UF1 in the plugin mixer layer.
Good morning, I discovered your channel and its content of immense quality and the most interesting. Question regarding ssl 360 software. If understood correctly, if I put the ssl 360 software on each track, will the tracking of the tracks with the ssl uf 1 be effective then? No need to buy a vst ssl channel strip for track tracking, putting the ssl 360 software on each track solves the track tracking problem? Thank you again for the quality of your channel.
Many thanks for your response. It’s already a solution, so it’s okay 😊 This avoids having to buy an additional ssl channel strip plugin, an excellent thing. Have a great day.
I have one more question if I may. Concerning The four buttons at the top can be configured on the UF 1, can I configure these four buttons for the lateral zoom function and the horizontal zoom on the tracks in Cubase Pro 13? Thank you in advance for your answer.
@@PHOENIX-fb1cf yes you can pretty much program anything into those. I don't think the zooms are available as a DAW command directly, but you can also put a keyboard macro under those buttons. So as long as you make sure that the zooms in Cubase have a keyboard shortcut it should be possible that way.
In Logic Pro X there is no problem with the bank. Somehow they solved it. No problem in Reaper either. S1 and Ableton Live? You need to look for files to replace on the Internet. Cubase is outdated in so many ways...
Yes it works on some DAWs but not on others: support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track#follow-selected-track-0-0 Apart from that, Cubase has always worked fine for me.
I kind of understood from this article that hey added sends to the plugin mixer layer as well, but I have not been able to find it yet. support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track#h_01HCCHY0WK8R4DR6VSMFXSKAA0
Ok I think I figured out the follow problem and it's definitely UF-1 ( probably UF-8 as well) only, UC-1 works perfectly , You have to be in plugin mixer layer for UF-1 to follow the tracks outside bank selection, you can use the plugin button that should be pinned to top right button to switch fader on UF-1 between plugin and DAW so you can change volume and use solo cut buttons, you channel knob should browns through inserts ( channel strip/link plugins) and you can edit them, the only issue I see is when you come back from Plugin mixer layer to DAW layer it switches focus to whatever channel you were working on before selecting the channel with mouse. I don't know how they can explain the problem being related to Mackie control limitations since both UF-1 and UC-1use the same protocol and UC1 doesn't have any problems and you can mouse switch channels and browse through them seamlessly but UF-1 is not following, witch is definitely weird since UC-1 follows UF-1 perfectly.
Yes that’s exactly what the video is about. If you use plugin mixer layer with that new 360 link plugin on every channel track follow will work. If you use DAW layer it will not follow. DAW layer uses the Mackie protocol which causes track follow to only work within a bank on some DAWs. That’s confirmed by the SSL tech article I linked.
Ha it’s still used a lot. There are many plugins for VU meters. I’ve always used VUMT before for example and the VU meter in the Britson plugin for gain staging each channel.
@G_handle, sorry it's no longer in the chat. I think you posted it just after the premiere was already done. Can you post it here again, because I think it would be very interesting for everyone!
