ℹ️ About the Episode
From time to time we find an RV product that we love enough to do a full review and "how to" on it. The RV Smart Plug from Etrailer really impressed us.
It took a flimsy outlet (like many manufacturers use) and turned it into a SAFER and sturdier "twist lock" option that will probably end up being the last one we ever have to install.
Do not travel will a hazardous RV power Inlet. If that connection isn't tight, you could be at risk. This will end that worry forever.
We are not affliates. We just LOVE this product. We used the 50 AMP Smart Plug - www.etrailer.com/RV-Power-Inl...

I think some plywood inside your RV wall would remove some of the wall flex you see when plugging in.

You made that look so easy, my dad was a underground electrician in the mines, he always told me when working with anything electrical make sure your juice(thats what he called the power) is off and you're good to go. Well done my guy.

I like the fact that you didn't post this right after you did it and added the one month review at the end. Thats different and it provides more confidence in the product. Great job

Good job. Not everyone will have a crap load of tools to do the job. I have a ton of tools I could never take on the road. Wire ez will be one as it's hard to do any wiring without it. Live rubb tape is another but it's not UV stable. If I have room and the weight then a hydraulic wire compression tool is a must as it makes the best connection. I doubt I will ever take the Lazer wire stripper as it cost way to much money. But you did a great job. Thank you. Let us know on a year how it has stood up to time.

You’re the third person who has did an install of the component. Yeah it’s a bit pricey but for the safety feature and simplicity it’s worth the price. I checked it out.

On the standard plug you are supposed to twist it to lock and not rely on the ring to hold it
@liketheresnotomorrow
@liketheresnotomorrow 5 месяцев назад
We didn’t have a twist lock before with the older one. You just had to stick it in and the use the ring to tighten it. It was not a great design. This one is way more solid.

Nice job and a super clean install. I would put something behind the plug receptacle to stiffen the trailer wall or you will be repairing this again.

We have a 36v11 and plan on doing this install. I put one in our last rig and super easy. The hardest part for us is we had aluminum sides so had to figure a way around the ridged sides. I just subscribed so I can see more stuff from you all

@@liketheresnotomorrow will do. It'll be easier than the last one I installed and gonna find a way to reinforce the wall since it is so flimsy

Stick the cable through the strain relief before you strip the outer jacket. Makes it way easier. Also when you are stripping the insulation off with a knife like that, be super careful not to cut into the copper strands. that will start a crack in the strands that will break off over time. for lubricating the cable to get it through the strain relief, soap works but is pretty messy. splash a little rubbing alcohol on the jacket. It's just as slippery, and will evaporate without leaving a sticky residue. There are much higher quality receptacles that are the standard connector, but they run sixty bucks or more, and you probably have to special order them from an electrical supplier.

I would put an aluminum stiffner behind the sheet metal. Also wondering if they have 30amp adapter plug. I often use 30 amp plug in my 50 amp plug in.
@JonBoehm
@JonBoehm 5 месяцев назад
You might want to beef up the anchor. The sheet metal isn't stiff enough. The whole assembly should not flex that much. Maybe add a thicker metal backing plate, behind the sheet metal, to stiffen things up.

I was going to add the same comment. That is a bad place to mount that connector, no matter the type.

A 90 degree angle connector would be ideal for the cord, less stress on the cord and connectors

I would solder the ends of the wires making them solid and use silicone spray instead of soap and I agree plywood behind to stiffen the panel
@OVCArchion
@OVCArchion 2 месяца назад
Never tin wires that are going into a clamped connection. As the solder heats it softens and deforms. It will become loose and generate more heat.
@waltfriedrich7631
@waltfriedrich7631 2 месяца назад
@@OVCArchion been doing it that way over 50 years and never had an issue. The only way for the solder to soften is if it was not tightend correctly in the first place

Is there not plywood sheeting on the backside of that aluminum panel? In all my years of owning campers w the modular screw in power plug I’ve never had an issue or defect w the plug assembly. Oh, I’ve personally owned 27 RV’S and counting. I did see a neighboring rv’er trip over his power plug and crack it as well.

I just noticed you have your Starlink cable going through your garage window. Does that work well for you? I’ve got the same mounting bracket you do in this video for the pole but I run my cable under the rv to the right front storage door and keep my router out there. I would prefer having it in my garage where my mobile remote office is set up but haven’t found an easy way to get the cable inside the garage. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
@liketheresnotomorrow
@liketheresnotomorrow 2 месяца назад
Yea, it works, although in high heat or extreme cold it’s not ideal because the window is cracked. In a perfect world we would creat a perm cord outlet of some sort, but, well… time. lol For us, it’s just fine this way.

Now what a neat idea. My only question is with using soap when put this back together makes me worry. Soap has water in it and that soap is now inside that connector end and wouldn’t that moisture cause corrosion?
@liketheresnotomorrow

We haven’t experienced any issue with it, and it was recommended, but apparently you can use silicone as well.

I say billshit....I've never had that issue. If I did I would replace it with the stock unit and get a 90 degree adapter....problem solved.
