'A Grim World of Perilous Adventure' was on the 1st edition rules cover. I still have my original hardback copy from 1986. Zweihander used that because it's a tribute to Warhammer.

I also noticed the little round chapter/section art pieces reminiscent of 1st edition in the new one. Liked it. I have fond memories of WFRP 1e from my late 80s childhood. The grimdark shock was wonderful!

Yup. In fact the entire concept of "grimdark" had its genesis with Warhammer.

Not all Dwarves get mohawks, just Troll Slayers and the follow on ranks. It's a death wish cult.

I played it for a few months back in first edition. It was excellent! I lost that book due to a flood. I just bought this one.

I've begun to think of Warhammer Fantasy RP (and Zweihander by extension) as a thematic mix of D&D and Call Of Cthulhu. A mutant melding, if you will. Corruption & mutation replaces CoC's insanity, which can be damn fun, but there are still plenty evil-summoning cultists and wicked monsters lurking around outside at night, or in the forest. Also don't forget the brutal potential for getting maimed in combat. Being a veteran WFRP character can mean playing a character missing body parts, or growing an extra arm if corrupted enough by Chaos!
@VaughanCockell

It's actually a trope that goes back to 1st edition (I believe). Someone described WFRP as "start out playing Dungeons and Dragons, and slowly realise you're actually playing Call of Cthulhu". 😉
@NefariousKoel
@NefariousKoel 5 лет назад
@@VaughanCockell I never heard that back then, but hardly anyone knew about it in my area. Guess it was an obvious observation! Heh

I've heard 4th edition is far closer to the first than 2nd and 3rd, which is great news, as 1st definitely had a style that made it stand out as it's own thing rather than just being D&D with a different background. Always loved that the players in Warhammer actually have careers, so they're the town guards and ratcatchers who are off adventuring, rather than being a "Ranger" (so what do you actually do Mr Ranger?) or other class which doesn't really serve any purpose in the world except adventuring, and if your Warhammer adventure doesn't end up in the town sewers, then you're doing it wrong.

good overview Kurt - so I guess now that you reviewed the new edition of Warhammer, then the new edition of RuneQuest is on the cards perhaps?

We played 2nd edition for awhile. Cool setting and great character generation. The modules were railroady, but fun. But it was lethal. Almost as bad as MERP, which had devastating criticals. In WHFRP the corruption one can gain from spell mishaps is nasty.

I'm half way through reading the book. Has anyone tried running the 1st edition scenarios (Lichemaster, Deaths Darkshadow, Drachenfels) with 4th edition rules ?

It’s funny that you hesitate to say grim and perilous, as this game is what zwiehander was inspired by! WFRP May have invented the genre in RPGs, maybe...

Grim and Perilous was WFRPs original tagline, not Zweihander's, so yeah.

Played a few sessions and loved the combat system. The magic system, on the other hand, needs a rewrite. This game desperately needs cantrips. Small, reliable spells that do useful things without the risk of your head exploding or being burned at the stake would make spellcasters much more interesting and useful.
@Zaccheus4

Petty magic spells are literally cantrips. They require 0 SL’s to succeed.

Do you play all these games before you make a review? or do you just read through and let us know what you think? I mean finding people to play all these games with is a dream come true.

Not if you're a game master who rules with an iron fist. ;) All kidding aside, I find that if you pitch an rpg or a setting well, players will usually be open to exploring new avenues. One of my current groups consists entirely of people who had only ever played 5E when we first started playing. We've been playing since 2017 and I've never touched 5E during that entire time. We have, however, played 2E, BECMI, Conan (2d20 system), Mutants & Masterminds 3, the Marvel Saga game, Slipsteam (Savage Worlds), Blue Rose, and Star Wars - Edge of Empire. My players have, themselves, moved on to other games as well: one of them is going to run a Star Trek game soon. It all depends on the pitch. And feel free to let them know you would enjoy running such a game. As game masters we tend to find it important that our players have fun - I think this is no different for the players themselves. They tend to want you to enjoy yourself too.

What? Everyone needs a rule book? Back in the 90's I was gming it. And only I had the book. Everyone catched the rules in an instant. Ah. Yeah. Those were times when people were still using their wits, not smartphones and apps. Best fantasy game and setting ever. Rest is cr*! compared to that.

I really enjoy the WHFRP thing (except for FFG's 3e). There is a very nice game buried under the ho-hum GW "Old World". Divorce the system from the setting and there is enormous potential for a good time. The Old World lacks originality and creativity imo. It's just tired tropes and so very derivative of popular themes taken from a variety of well known sources. The system on the other hand has an innovative approach to class/profession, an intuitive d100 mechanic, and workable magic. Corruption adds a fear factor if played well by a creative GM. Combat is indeed deadly, but the system supports roleplay and intrigue as well. Married to a better setting WHFRP can be a pretty good game. It is difficult to review something without playing it. About all that can be done is to give some general impressions based on a read through and perhaps note what others are saying about it.
@TheNiall666
@TheNiall666 5 лет назад
I was never too keen on the Old World setting, and for the same reasons as you give. It reminded me, but was not quite as bad as D&D's Known World of Mystara: a messy collection of unimaginative nations based on real world cultures from around the globe (all in close proximity to one another for some strange reason). As you say, it is probably best just to use another systems setting, or create your own. The world of Symbaroum might work.

I kinda like it, it maked the game feel more like a historical horror game than a bogstandard Forgotten Realms clone where things are shoehorned in because there are stats for them from other settings.
