Went to "journalism school", one of the professors gave a lecture and told everyone, "The public thinks they know everything, but they are not doctors, scientists, engineers, or journalists. They are not experts like us." This is the mindset of the people who spend their days watching tmz and tweeting. These people are the enemy.
Out of all the experts that your professor mentioned, journalists are at the bottom. Because, they're not exactly experts in those other fields, those fields require science and math.🤔
@@theroseexperience I'm wondering the same thing, it's because sometimes these journalists think that they're God and know better than the scientists/other experts.
Erik, totally correct what world do we live in where moderate is mentioned as an iinsult?! Full support for you, whatever your views are and I dont always agree with them but you always explain your opinions well.
Please just keep doing what you're doing, you're one of the few sane, reasonable, rational voices that gets to a wider audience. That anyone responds in that way is just a sign that you were on point and they have no argument.
If you aren't on their side 100% (and shout it from the rooftops), then you are the enemy. Zero deviation is allowed. Very cult-like behavior. You are one of the few journos I genuinely hope doesn't lose their job to AI. I was in the industry on the corporate retail side from 99-2017 and it didn't use to be like this. Wild stuff, man.
I thought it was assumed that if you are writing or creating content on a public platform, you are openly encouraging discourse and discussion, which includes potential criticism. Guess times have changed.
The homogeneity of mainstream is a problem, as there is a significant proportion of the audience looking for some escapism, but all journalism cares about is social issues. I believe escapism might be more important to a lot of people, just from a mental health perspective. People get a hour or two away from their real life bullshit, whatever it is.
Anything that makes them a bit uncomfortable is seen as ontologically evil, and any criticism is treated like hate speech. I really appreciate you speaking up and pushing back. We need a return to sanity. Also RIP to Game Informer.
So I started watching your channel back when RoP started and was looking for channels with TV reviews to see if I was alone in how bad the show was. At the time I subscribed to somewhere between 5 to 7 channels on the topic. at this time your channel is the only one I am still subscribed to. Some channels I left due to political slants others because I no longer found them entertaining. I hope your channel continues to grow.
keep doing what you do Erik! We love your opinions and reviews, you're a true journalist and game/tv/movie critic. Also, I'm sure this is about that mercante girl crying out '' HE LOOKED AT ME''. Pathetic. Man this is soo childish.
Something more than a few people have noticed, goes along with your point on these people doing a hostel takeover. So many of these people both with shows and movies, and games that worked their way into what otherwise would be for nerdy people, are the very people that would have made fun of us, bullied us, or laughed at anyone who liked these thing when we were younger. Then it became popular and they flocked in for the attention.
They want in on the hottest gig in entertainment right now for their resume even though they are genre illiterate and don't really care or like the material. Miss the days when we could safely sit in our nerd ghetto and be ignored by the mainstream who thought this is only for losers.
I could be wrong but I have a hunch that the person in question is a certain Kotaku -journalist- blogger who once told us to be nicer and then immediately challenged us to a physical fight 🤔
It reveals how their brain works though. They know that many of the things they write are meant to make people angry at other people… and that person, mentioning someone’s name, IS intended to send “trouble” their way in one form or another.
So true. They make offensive assumptions about people's motives and then get upset when their own intentions are called into question. They're so convinced of their right morality that they believe no criticism of their work can be justified.
I know that this isn't exactly a break through theory but I'm convinced social media has exasperated people's anxiety/depression to levels we're just not supposed to handle.
I’m with you that it’s not worth it to engage. The internet dislikes pushback of any kind, and it’s hard for me to be too critical because I can be just as sensitive. BTW, cheers for speaking about the mental health break. I can relate! Keep pushing forward, I’m digging your content and always look forward to what’s next.
It's kind of telling that "moderate" is supposed to be an insult now... that people are consciously striving for extremism is really a regrettable development.
I miss the good ole 2000's, hell even the 90's. I remember PC Gamer magazines, demo CDs and when the goal was just to make fun games. Basically, when politics didn't enter the realm of video games.
Just discovered your channel and love the videos I've seen so far. You're doing a great job and are a voice of reason in the madness. As someone who also suffers with mental health I'm sending you a massive virtual hug. I know that sounds cheesy but I don't care.
This is how I felt about theatre critique. Theatre critics are less common these days, but they only ever seem to give glowing reviews to productions. Is it because they only go and see productions that interest them? Is it because they don't want to turn people off theatre? I just feel like critics seem to have lost the ability to criticise.
just a sad byproduct of people who live chronically online. i guarantee if we all sat in person over a meal, we'd find that we have more in common than not
A lot of the people who engage in this behavior seem to have come of age after the rise of social media. It's as if they've never had to converse face-to-face with someone who they disagree with. It's antisocial behavior and it's not surprising when it comes from a generation of people who have primarily interacted with other people through the internet. Of course, there's also a group of older, antisocial people who have found their voice online. I hope humanity is in an adjustment period as we adapt to the internet but so far the trend is not good.
I'm conservative and I appreciate your channel even tho we disagree politically because I enjoy your moderate and honest perspective on issues. You may not consider yourself moderate, but compared to the modern left you are lol
It's the gaming hack playbook, almost point by stroppy point, Play the harassed victim of 'insert ism here' threaten, then mobilise the mob to ...harass...
Some people take a joy just to be outraged and sperg out - annoy you. And I am 100% for blocking those burner accounts. And these people exist on both spectrums. It's the sane+real one's you want to reach out
I think you could do with some cheering up Kain. Look up "John Cleese Vs Extremism". If you didn't see it back during Gamergate, it'll probably give you a chuckle.
I agree with this and think it applies even to engaging in discourse online in general. Like if you post an opinion, other people are allowed to take issue with it.
I’ve usually thought of entertainment that doesn’t appeal to me as just that: it’s not for me, so I go elsewhere where they cater to my tastes. But I’m getting mighty tired of being followed everywhere I wander off to by a certain group of people who deem it necessary to apply pressure to change and “clean up” every single genre and subgenre that doesn’t align with their tastes or worldview. So I’ve had enough. No more. It’s time for them to back off.
Seeing you pissed that person off with your disagreement with them, it sounds like they really had no good counter argument. Saying someone is not allowed to criticize or argue with one’s own opinion because one did not do so first is indeed ridiculous. I mean, is no one allowed to criticize a film made by Stephen Spielberg because he didn’t mention them in his film first? Or does this only apply to game journalists, the holiest of journalists?
Erik you are once again spot on with this one. I love differing opinions. I'm always open for a mutually respectful discussion about ideas. I stopped going to gameinformer, ign etc because I got sick and tired and seeing/hearing this subtext about how I'm a terrible person for having a differing belief system. Especially from people who really seem to lack any kind of nuance in anything. I base that opinion on the fact that they all think an identical thing. I could walk into ign(or almost any media focused place) and tell you with probably 95%+ accuracy how every single person there feels about most political issues. That's not a good thing. Especially when they've also applied this moral virtue that gives them permission(in their own eyes) to not only hate me, but even hope that evil or death befalls me or "my team". That's some pretty evil stuff man. Unbelievably dangerous. I do not agree with a lot of your opinions, but I respect and appreciate them all. You seem like a wise person as well so it's interesting and fun to listen. Thank you again for your insight and please keep spreading this wisdom.
Erik Kain! Erik Kain! Erik Kain! What happens now? Maybe watch Rififi? Great heist movie! Apart from that, I agree, the whole idea of people who think they can make up the rules as they see fit and not be called out on it, is delusional.
I follow a lot of people who consider themselves liberal/progressive who have basically been kicked out of their political groups by the wokies. It's weird. I think I know who you are talkin bout. I can relate so much with the periodic funks. I have an autoimmune disorder that is disabling when it flares up and not being able to exercise is so rough on my mental health. I ended up having to give up my career. It sucks. Hang in there! The pendulum will always swing the other way.
I find it interesting that they can't call Erik conservative, which is probably the insult they're used to throwing out, so they instead go with moderate, which essentially exposes that they find anyone outside of their group morally compromised in some way.
I have a hard time taking game journalists seriously (you and Mr. Tassi not withstanding) since Dean Takahashi couldn't finish the Cuphead tutorial. In the interest of rewarding the other end of the spectrum, Mitchell Saltzman of IGN posted a video of him P-Ranking Pizza Tower's first level. This proved he understood exactly what was going on in the game he reviewed, and is to be extremely comended.
What I find most aggravating about these political activists is that they mask their activism through "games journalism" and have infiltrated and poisoned my biggest hobby. Even worse, they have the gull to lash out against the typical videogame consumer because they do not fit with their political views. Nothing more cowardly than a "videogames journalism". I wonder why they don't try writing in other genres of journalism... Maybe because they are shit at their job?
I'm from Canada... our health care system is crap! Sure, it's free but it feels like it as well. I feel it would be way better to offer "microtransactions" and "pay to win" options.
Hm, I found your channel thanks to TV show reviews and I really enjoy it. I don't always agree but I love to hear your opinion, and compare it to mine. I don't need our views to be identical to enjoy it.
Neitzche had opinions on the weak, they resent and hate those with more perceived power. Left wing game journos know the power of the games industry, mainly that it's a space where normal dudes get their down time, and they hate it, they want control and are just displaying their inability to create actual power in it, ie creating things people want to play.
My Mom once said to me, “Be nice to the stupid people, Madge.” We then looked at each other and laughed like loons. Because, right…. 😂 Sounds like you ran into some major idiot, Erik, but hope you’re doing ok. (Maybe see a doctor for the high/lows?) Take care!
Let me guess, it's a her and the first name starts with A and the last name starts with M? I took journalism in high school in 2002 or '03 because I wanted to be one for a while. Glad I didn't continue with it because it sounds like I'd be stuck in high school to this day. I love your moderate approach. And moderate is an insult because they see those types of people as more evil than their opponents because they assume you're watching evil happen and not doing anything about it.
I hate that it's a shortcut in journalism to don a holier-than-thou attitude and attack groups of people. Wait for expected outrage. Cry foul/play victim. Grow niche audience. Get clicks. It feels like it's a lot less than it was a few years ago, but that may be because I don't get into the drama much these days.
@ErikKain which I'd argue the 3 No thank you nations did it incredibly wrong. However, 3 I'll agree Nations did it as best as it can be done but does make the patient responsible. Example is obesity due to eating or smoking, they pay out of pocket. I agree with that, as a former smoker and I won't go into detail on other habits, I was apart of the 2000s & 2010s epidemic of the big O. Clean 10¼ years though so there's responsibility to go around. Luckily I didn't get Hepatitis or HIV, so I got off Scott free beyond yes it did have long term effects on emotional regulation but I deal. That is my socialized Healthcare shpil. Canada? No. Japan? yes.
