Back in the days of GameMaker 7 and 8, I remember stumbling onto your games on yoyogames sandbox. At the time I was blown away by the quality of 3d you're doing on an engine that's not innately meant for 3d. I occasionally come back to your channel just so that I can get my mind blown over and over again. You're somehow able to produce better visuals within GameMaker than most people (Including myself) can produce within Unity. Always good to see you upload!

SInce learning GML I couldn't understand why earlier versions were able to code with D3D and not studio 2.0. I have a basic knowledge of shaders and this opened up a whole new perspective in using them. Happy to see the translation you supplied here with great detail in using veC with the camera. So many videos I run into always saying "if you wnat 3d use a different engine". Thank you for this enlightning video. Please update us on your learning path as you go I would be very greatful.

Yeah I get that! About 95% of this stuff is possible with GMS 1.4. Only the structs I think are not possible, for which I can think of several workarounds. Definitely keep using GMS 1.4 if you're more comfortable!

Halfway thru video, note that the reason 3d stuff gets flipped in gm is because youre using the camera system. they auto apply a Y flip matrix onto the end of the projection mat i think. Cuz yknow, GM is normally a 2d engine, which is +y down this doesnt occur if you roll your own camera system and directly set matrix_view & matrix_projection in like. draw begin/end, or with layer begin/end scripts its Annoying :[

You can install the function from the developer's Github repository: github.com/Sandman13sq/DmrVBM-blender-to-gms2 Just download the ZIP file and extract the scripts into your project. so um, i'm quite new with game maker and i followed your instructions. But around 12:06 , instead of those upside down flags inside the room, i got a sun-like object which is probably all the vertex buffers combined to one, and i'm not even inside a room. Did i import the sprites and textures or even script incorrectly or something?
@afaaldira
@afaaldira 8 месяцев назад
Okay, i tried adding vertex_format_add_color before vertex_format_add_custom and it kinda works...except the fact that the textures themselves aren't getting loaded into the vertex buffers(?) so all i can see is them with neon-like coloring instead of textures. Does anyone know what's the problem?
@GamingEngineer
@GamingEngineer 8 месяцев назад
Hey there, sorry about the late reply. I'm stuck at work :) If your vertex buffers look all messed up, this will have something to do with your vertex format. If you export your mesh in Blender using a specific vertex format, you *must* use the *exact* same vertex format in Game Maker. So for example, if you export your mesh using position 3D, normals, texture uvs and color information, the order matters just as much in Game Maker. Does the same thing happen in the example project? You can download it for free in the description if you want to take a look!

How to move these light sources?
@GamingEngineer
@GamingEngineer 11 месяцев назад
For now you need to manually use the add_light function to place and move lights. You can also adjust the structs in code afterwards. I'm currently working on a more robust framework that would make that a lot easier.
@WobbleScoff
@WobbleScoff 9 месяцев назад
I'm only good with gm 8.1, this tutorial is really good. But the lights are only rendered at the start of the room, what if i want to have a dynamic light like a fire? Do I need to make the lights have an id and have an update array script or something?
@GamingEngineer
@GamingEngineer 9 месяцев назад
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the tutorial. You can update the position of each light using a simple for loop where you update the x, y and z position. In Game Maker you could do something like this: var desired_light = 2; for(var i = 0; i < array_length(light_positions); i++) { if(i == desired_light) { light_positions[i] = x; light_positions[i + 1] = y; light_positions[i + 2] = z; break; } } This will update the third light source's position to the player's position. You don't have to add or delete items from the array in order to update the positions. If this isn't helpful I'll try to make a little example project.

Really depends on how far you want to take it. Doom 1 & 2? Very doable. Quake? Somewhat harder. Halo CE? Pretty difficult. Anything is possible with Game Maker but its strengths are totally 2D-oriented in my opinion. In short, it would be difficult but a very fun challenge!

@GamingEngineer
@GamingEngineer 8 месяцев назад
As long as it's disabled your geometry won't be culled/optimized. Meaning that this likely isn't the cause of your issue. You can enable culling in Game Maker using gpu_set_cullmode(CULL_MODE) and then replace CULL_MODE with one of three constants: cull_none, cull_counterclockwise or cull_clockwise. Culling ensures that only one side of each triangle is drawn instead of both sides, resulting in much better performance.

Haha, I don't think Game Maker should be used for any "serious" 3D game but considering the whole Unity debacle, I understand switching engines would be the next logical step.

Hi! I am keep getting same error, I have tried fixing it but no result. Can you help me out with it? 😅 vertex_submit: Illegal vertex buffer specified. at gml_Object_objPlayer_Draw_0 (line 23) - vertex_submit(current_buffer.vertex_buffer, pr_trianglelist, current_buffer.albedo);

Hey! Ah I know this issue. It happens from time to time and I still don't really understand why. What worked for me was duplicating the object in Blender and then export the new one as a vertex buffer. If that doesn't work, simply add a plane anywhere in your scene and select both the model you want to export and the plane. If you export them both at the same time, it works! No idea why this is the case, but hopefully it works for you too!
