Andy, you're not the only one to compare Village to a theme park. It's honestly a great structure for the game. Also, for having a silly tone mixed cool characters, I still cared about Ethan emotionally. Shout out to Todd Soley.
I'm with Mike here. Having a new RE every year would make the games terrible. They might be good for a few years, but after that the team will get burnt out and they'll start to lose that RE magic.
Same happened to RE 3 remake if only they had spent 6 to 8 more months with the it then my good the game would've been awesome.... I'll never forgive capcom for not creating clocktower's interior as a playable area, seriously what were they thinking......
@@stinkfist6422 The funny thing is, I think they wanted to make it like the original RE2 and RE3. Because RE3 the original, came out a mere like 6 to 7 months after the original RE2. It didn't work here quite as well, but still was a good game, but not a great game like RE2 (remake)
Literally just finished Psychonauts 2 the other day and can confirm it is amazing! I love that Andy used the sailing music in the background as he spoke because the playful what should we do with the drunken sailor motif works *so well* in that section and it may be my favourite song on the ost. GOTY is difficult for me because LiS True Colours, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Psychonauts 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy were all *excellent* so it's too hard to choose!
Is the first psychonauts required before playing the sequel? I keeping scrolling pass 2 on game pass and thinking about playing it but always tell myself I will after finally getting around to the first one
@@Dave_ja_vu I think you'll appreciate the game more if you've played the first one, but generally it is a self contained story so it isn't necessary. There are a few references to the first game that you might not get but none of them are necessary to understand what's going on and there's a short recap video at the start of the game to catch you up on everything important. I'd recommend playing the first one at some point anyway, but don't feel like you have to play them in order :D

You are not he only on, infact i had the best time in factory than in any other place in village, killing those soldat enemies was extremely satisfying. It make you feel that you are not just taking out their health but also doing physical damage and this is not the case with any other type of enemies in other areas even in entire franchise, the only other title able to achieve this was RE 2 remake exploding heads, dismembereds was so fun.
I love Heisenberg's factory and Heisenberg himself is one of my favorite Resi characters now. He's so OOTP and I love evert second of it. I also recently unlocked a lightsaber in the post game and I've been testing it out on Heisenberg's army and I love every ridiculous moment of running around being a Jedi Mold dad lightsabering Frankenstein zombies in the factory.
Really great body horror level. Which I think was his theme for his factory. Just what are the most messed up things he could do to the human body to make them into weapons that could happen in real life to people. So outlandish, but not too outlandish. And it handles it well. Like just the horrible machine body people
It was the scariest level for me. That sort of body-horror and not knowing when they were going to activate and chase you are terrifying for me. At least, the baby is easy to runaway from.
I didn't really get to play many new games this year, but I really loved Deltarune chapter 2. The characters were all really cool, I love the dynamic between Ralsei, Susie, Kris and Noelle in this chapter, and it gave me a new appreciation for Berdly. And the music was as amazing as ever, especially BIG SHOT

My game of the year absolutely was Metroid Dread. It's the first metroid game I ever played but it is hands down the most fun I had with a game this year.
My 21 GOTY is Boyfriend Dungeon. It was absolutely the year of the indie for me. Unpacking came in strong, but BfD has a great mix of light yet challenging shooting combined with great story.
Boyfriend dungeon was an absolute surprise of a delight for me. I didn't know anything about it till it popped up on Eurogamer. Aoife wasn't playing it fast enough so I got it myself lol Needed to know all the things! Seven was my favourite
Oh I forgot that was that year! I'm enjoying it immensely, I find all the Dunj buddies so compelling. Every time I think "okay THIS one is my favourite" another character shows up and steals my heart
Just here to mention that Inscryption also came out this year, even got "dlc". That's probably my contender. Though, props to Darkest Dungeon 2, though I don't know if that quite counts since it is in early access, and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus, though in terms of new content it probably doesn't beat Inscryption. Also LiSTC, but many are already mentioning that one.

I’m literally playing RE8 on my other monitor while watching this video. RE7 was scarier (except for the beneviento mansion which is change-your-pants terrifying), but RE8 has way better loot, level design, and combat. Such a fun game. I really liked the factory. The new enemy types with the glowing cores on their chests were pretty fun to fight,
I'm with Mike. I think "getting Jason X" on Resident Evil is kind of the perfect scenario for the series. You've got your labs and scientists, but you've also got your isolation horror and campiness. You could even have a Holodeck situation so you can have a mansion in space.
It shouldn't count but as it was my first time playing them I'm going to say Mass Effect legendary edition. Honourable mentions for Guardians of the Galaxy (which would be my best 'new' game), Kena Bridge of Spirits and Halo Infinite.
I think it counts because it's a great remaster that retooled quite a bit for the first ME game that made it feel a lot closer in quality to ME2 and it's been long enough that it's a lot of people's first time playing the trilogy, so it totally counts, imo.
Stuck between Lost Judgment and Hitman 3 as my game of the year. I like them for very different reasons (the story and improvements in gameplay for the former, the sheer amount of creativity you can do for the latter).
I am honestly considering Guardians of The Galaxy as the story and interactivity is really solid, haven't had as good a comic book video game since Batman Arkham City!
one thing cool about Metroid is that Samus Aran is a female protagonist! and for the time it first came out, that was a whopper of a reveal. here is a quote "We wanted to prepare a reward for people who cleared it more quickly,” Sakamoto says. “Then someone said, 'It would be a shocker if Samus turned out to be a woman! ' And everyone thought that would be interesting and wanted to do it, so we decided it right away.”
I think Luke proves a game of the year can be as simple as a captivating game that come out right when you needed it. For me, and this is gonna be a hot take i'm sure, but was New Pokemon Snap. It came out in April, back when there was constant insecurity about vaccines (at least here in Canada) and it was a return of one of my favourite games ever. Pokemon Snap was always something special, a relaxing go at your own safari adventure where you can see pokemon...being pokemon. New Pokemon Snap took the charm of the original and improved upon it with updated graphics, hundreds of pokemon, new mechanics and a whole region to explore. It can be fast or slow depending on how you like to experience it. Whenever I needed to unwind a bit i'd come back to pokemon snap and try to hunt that missing pokemon or pose for my photodex.
Poor Luke! I'm sorry you got Covid, but I'm glad Metroid Dread was there to help you through it. I seem to play almost exclusively games made years ago (I'm currently playing Fallout 4, for example), so I don't have any GOTYs personally, but -- gotta say, I loved the RE8 LP, sooo. . .
I loved Village, it was SO fun despite its stupidity and weirdness. It was gorgeous and I am such a fangirl for Ethan Winters. I was a big fan of Inscryption, it was such a weirdly incredible indie gem
What I liked the most about RE8's design was that, yes, it's a linear story, but its world was *just* big enough to not feel restrictive. So much of the map was technically not mandatory, but I could easily explore the whole village in one playthrough without Open World Fatigue (TM).
That peashooter tank against Heisenberg Boss fight on Village of Shadows difficulty in RE8 was super annoying and frustrating, apart from that the game was amazing. Still, Hitman 3 wins as my game of the year
Psychonauts 2 and Resident Evil Village feel like PS2 Game Design, and I mean that as the highest flattery I can give a game in how nice it made me feel, it feels like the best parts of gaming in 2005
Monster Hunter Rise is my GoTY easily. Never played or really even looked into monster hunter before I bought Rise on whim. I didn't realize it'd come to dominate my gaming life and turn me into a hardcore MH fan. Played Rise for quadruple digit hours, then put several hundred hours into MH Stories 2 and now am playing 2018's MH World/Iceborne, gaming in 2021 has been %90 MH for me.
I’ve been a bit busy this year, so I haven’t been keeping up with games as much. It might not be a super informed decision cause I haven’t played a lot of new games, but Village is my pick for GOTY. Andy is so right about it feeling like a theme park. House Bienviento was the first thing to well and truly scare me in years.

Wildermyth for Game of the year. Never been more attached to a player made character then I am with Iverain. She started as a hunter, and almost immediately accepted a lycan curse to turn into a wolf, but before the transformation could take place, she had another curse that started turning her into a crow. Just when you'd think she looks like some sort of very cool abomination that kills everything in her path, she got a necklaces she traded for scorpion tail. She eventually retired, to live in the woods with her partner, with her child taking her place in the party. Runner up is Deathloop. cause kicking stuff is fun.
I was trying to guess what your picks would be... figured RE8 might be Andy's, but completely forgot about Metroid Dread. I'm a huge fan of Hollow Knight and the Ori games, not sure if MD is my kind of thing, though... Andy trying to think of awesome new locations for Resident Evil 9 and, even after his Disneyland comparison, somehow didn't suggest "[abandoned] amusement park".
Resi 9 should be Mia travelling around North America dealing with Maya, Aztec, Sioux, Navaho, etc. monsters and mythology. And I have to agree with Luke.
My GOTY was Hitman 3.I didn't play Hitman 2 before but played Hitman 2016 before so I knew I would enjoy playing H3.I decided that the first time I play a level I get Silent Assassin (Silent Assassin Suit Only sometimes,but that is much harder)and when I replay a level I play more like Jane or sometimes go full Mike.
Luke should play Dragonball Fighterz instead. Why? Because its just a fighting game. You've 100% the game just by playing each character once, and you get to pick 3 characters for your team so you can go through the entire roster really fast.
I kinda have a love hate relationship with Metroidvania games, I love them but almost always they make them so rock hard that eventually I just get to the point where I just can’t continue and I’m left very unsatisfied with the whole thing. My favourite metroidvanias are Aquaria and Dust because I actually managed to finish them. Most frustrating, Iconoclasts and Ori because I was loving them and then just got stuck unable to continue. I haven’t played Hollow Knight because, from what people say about it, I know that I’m going to love as much as I’m able to play and then just get stuck.
Personally my 2 games of the year didn't come out this year, but I played them this year, so they count! Emotionally, it's Spiritfarer (2020). You play as a person who shepherds the souls of the departed through a sort of purgatory - a realm in which they deal with their unfinished business. And the characters are just so cheerful, so heartwarming. It's a simple, cosy sort of game, but the feels it generates are super intense. Mechanically, it's La Mulana (2013). It's a metroidvania with cryptic puzzles on the order of games like Myst, with a healthy dose of the high lethality traps and bosses you expect in a Soulslike game. If any one of those three things (Metroidvania, Myst Puzzles, Soulslike lethality) is not a thing you like, you will likely find this game infuriating. If they are things you like, you will *still* find it infuriating, but you're also the right kind of masochist that it might be an enjoyable kind of infuriating. It's a superb game. Take copious notes.
Fun video concept. Most GotY videos are dry and matter of fact. I love OxBoxTra confessional type videos. I think the only game that came out in 2021 that I played was Hitman 3. And it was a brilliant final entry in the trilogy, even if the launch was a bit of a cluster. But in general, I like to wait for most games to finish baking. My game of the year, though is Mass Effect Legendary Edition. First time playing through the series and it was just an amazingly awesome experience. Nevermind that they were just remasters. They were new to me.
Can't say I got to play many this year (a bunch my kids only just got for Christmas) but for me the fact I sunk over 700 hours into both MHRise and MHStories 2 says alot about how much I enjoyed them so both share my GOTY.
This was genuinely interesting to see what your GOTYs are. I didn't play many games that came out exactly this year, but this year i finished 'Alien: Isolation' among other games and that one topped everything for me. So i guess i could say that 'A:I' would be my GOTY
My GOTY is probably blue reflection second light. A series I'd not heard of and then I played both the first one (from 2017) and second light (this year) in like two weeks. The characters are so fun and well written. The designs of the levels are all great. And the story was genuinely sweet and emotional.
Rift Apart I am begging I just feel like the difference between it and the other contenders is the style like it being cartoonish aliens is holding it back
My game of the year is The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, but that's a remaster of two games not from this year. So maybe it's Miitopia- no, wait, that's also remaster of a game not from this year. Hmm.
Personally, I didn't think this was a particularly strong year for games due to the pandemic delaying a lot of them, but the ones we did get were good, or better than their predecessors at least, e.g. RE8, LiS: True Colors, etc. It's weird because there were a lot of good games, but nothing I'd classify as GOTY compared to previous years. Granted, it's all subjective, but I believe 2022, will just be a better year for games all around considering what's coming e.g. Forbidden West, Ragnork, Starfield, Red Fall, Stalker 2, etc.
I literally just finished watching the Resident Evil Village series of videos this afternoon before watching this video. I don't currently have a gaming consul, but if I do get a new one, this game, plus one of the HItman games, would be on my list of games to buy thanks to this channel's videos. 9:51 Resident Evil tends to work best when it's someplace unexpected, with lots of variety. So anything obvious (trains, mansion, lab, ect.) would not be the way to go. My first thought jumps to some prison in a dictatorship that's being used as a "demonstration" for the prospective buyer. this allows for things to get very creepy, but not a ton of variety is built in. my next thought is some getaway resort, although that might be too similar. My last thought, and this one is high risk, but high reward, is in the mind of an infected. So, you're someone infected with the latest virus, and you are slowly succumbing to it. Part of your symptoms include vivid hallucinations, where all the creepy stuff would play out. But, you'd spend your time "thinking straight" trying to find a cure. This could also allow for some excellent story beats where it's a bits where you are either "waking up and dealing with" the horrible things the player did while having an episode, or trying to piece together what happened during that time.
Even though I don’t agree with your choices I’m still a big fan & with the exception of real critics(I.e.unlike the nobodies in youtube or other sites)& the game awards,you are the only ones outside of those who’s opinions for goty I can respect,these are facts.
Not played many new 2021 games but DLC came out of some of my favorite games Fynx Rising and Ghost of Tsushima 2 basically perfect games. But RE Village was very good and polished. Psychonauts 2 has the idea of going inside other peoples minds that the sequel to Alice Madness Returns that was scrapped
My game of the year for 2021 is Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Yes I know it came out in 2020. It's still my game of this year, and also every year going forward :P (And in a techical sense, 2.0 and Happy Home Paradise did legitimately drop only last month and rekindle my love for AC)
I also had a Switch to get me through covid, back in January. Difference is I bought it after I was already sick, and solely because of Luke’s Animal Crossing archived streams!
So my GOTY is kind of out there for most probably. But Tales of Arise. Just a great and meaningful story, great characters, great combat, great anime graphics, great sound design and sound track. Really awesome game overall. RE8 is amazing too though!!
