It's funny hearing them say, "That's the guy from Last of Us!" while the rest say on TLOU, "That's Oberyn Martell!". Oberyn is Pedro Pascal's breakout role. After Game of Thrones, he was then cast in Narcos, Madalorian and The Last of Us.
he makes a huge impression in storm of swords, especially considering he's in only about a third of the book. i think he has line in only 4 chapters of storm if i recall.
The sword that was melted is Ice, Ned's valyrian greatsword, passed down through generations of Starks. Also it was Ned's own sword which was used to behead him, who was branded a traitor, just as he had used it to behead those he branded as traitors.
Beheaded with your own ancestral sword. What a way to go :( Then to have that sword melted down and used by such snakes as the Lannisters. Insult to injury
Spartan is right, tormund (red hair guy) was not there when ygritte shot Jon. She did it as she was hurting, so releasing that pain but not killing him cause she loves him
Truth. If anything, though we didn't see much of him, Robb was more like Brandon Stark than Ned in terms of personality based on what we hear about Brandon before he died and Robert's Rebellion.
Jamie loves cersei bc he trully loves her. Cersei only uses Jaime, and “like” him bc he remembers her of herself. She is so narcissistic that she is in love with the way Jaime looks like her. In the books is pretty noticeable the way they think about each other.
@@dreamfyre3868 Yep, book!Cersei's feelings about Jaime are complicated because she feels trapped in her patriarchal role and wants to be a man (or at least treated equal to men). Therefore, her feelings for Jaime are a muddled mix of feeling so connected to him because his is her twin and she believes they a unit and not individuals. But also madly jealous of the opportunities he has because he is a man. And also dismissive of him because she believes she has the stronger personality of the two, and disdainful because he lets her completely manipulate him. I can't remember if she says it in the books or show or both, but she believes she is the "son" - the heir - that her father should have had. And she holds it against both Jaime and Tyrion that her father - and the world at large - doesn't recognize this.
Oberyn went to kings landing in the first place at this time is because he was irritated by what happened at the red wedding. Pedro pascal has huge range GOT’s Oberyn is a testimony of that as you mentioned very different from the last of us as well as older work such as The Equalizer 2 , The Mandalorian , Narcos among many more. The man can do action, drama, comedy, horror, science fiction, f good guy, villain , half villain, warrior, thief not to mention he is respected and loved by all his costars and everyone who met him, What can’t this man do is the question!
Yeah, he acts different with each role. Unlike others that seem like to play as themselves, making the acting similar and all you can see is the actor, not the character.
Daenerys having trouble with the dragons makes so much sense since you guys watched HOTD and saw how things were before. The other Targaryens had a dragonpit and special trainers and dragons tamed since birth. Daenerys is literally creating her own rules and trying to come up with stuff on the spot to train them like inventing "Dracarys" and other Valyrian commands. To add to it, she is dealing with three dragons personally bonded to her like a mother rather than a single dragon/dragonrider bond. I like to interpret their disobedience as also fussy children and later rebellious teenagers lol.
Sansa and Tyrion got a shotgun wedding just to secure the north which is why Tywin was so set on the consumation because they need a child of Stark blood to rule after Sansa. The Red Wedding was either already planned at that point or being planned
She's not asking why they are being married (that's the obvious part), but why do their wedding before Joffery's, the reasons you give can still go into motion after the Royal wedding, I mean they already have Sansa anyway so why the haste? Sansa is Lady Lannister now, that means she won't be ruling Winterfell, and her first born son would be heir to Casterly Rock, not Winterfell and there's a 50/50 chance she gives birth to a dwarf and we know how Tywin would feel about that...
@@drenzik6284 Having Sansa now doesn't guarantee that they would have her later. It was rushed to guarantee the union would go through. And it was not something that needed to be big and glamorous like a royal wedding so it didn't need to wait.
@@Golladan Ah, she's still a prisoner, even after the 'union', how does that guarantee that they will have her later, even Tyrion will have to rape her to have anything going with her, seriously how?...
@@drenzik6284 It actually doesn't matter what her name is if she is next inline to nherit. She would get Winterfell by the laws if succession and Tyrion as her husband would rule after her. That's how feudal inheritance works. They did it suddenly nd without warning for the reasons above as well as to forestall the Tyrell plot. Also the Lannisters are paranoid and they didnt want someone else to steal her away and beat them to the punch which to be fair the Tyrell's almost did.
Idk if you noticed at the end, Arya got her sword and her horse that she wanted, along with a bit of revenge. And the hound got his chicken. It was a “happy ending” to their previous scenes. I thought it was a nice way to start the season, ending the first episode with a point for team stark. Although it’s a small victory, it’s a victory nonetheless. We deserved that after end of the last season. That’s how I looked at it, anyway.
The cold open tells a fascinating story. We see the Blacksmith making the two swords from Ned's sword Ice as the slow and mournful Stark theme plays, which picks up pace and transforms into the Lannister theme as it cuts to Tywin sinisterly putting a symbolic nail on the Stark coffin by throwing the wolf carcass into the fire. And yes I know that's not how swords are actually forged, but the scene is aesthetically awesome🤷♂️. Jaime...the one man in Westeros who can say no to Tywin's face and live to tell the tale. The favorite son. Very different vibe from Tyrion's talk with Tywin at the beginning of last season.
don't expect consistent good things... this show is a perfect combination of beauty and devastation and you're better off embracing both the beauty and the devastation
@@noneofyourbeeswax01 I disagree about the constant disappointment - there are many more great moments to come in the next 4 seasons. But I agree with the second part - this show isn't your typical good guy wins and bad guy loses kinda show, the good guys win and lose and the bad guys win and lose, which makes this show unpredictable and a pleasure to watch.
@@noneofyourbeeswax01 You're out of your mind if you think this is constant disappointment and only the heroes losing. No one would watch this show if it was just predictable misery porn. Heroes can win just as easily as the villains can in GoT. It's just that no one is guaranteed to win.
Tywin did have a slight smirk when melting down the greatsword Ice, Ned's valyrian sword. He most likely gets a kick out of being victorious over other ancient houses and annihilating all traces of them. The way he dealt with his father's vassals house Reyne of Castamere was a similar instance and it is said it was one of the few times in his life where he genuienly smiled, though not warmly of course.
@@stanmann356 At least not for a long time. They did have Brightroar, purchased from Valyria while it still existed, but a fumbling Lannister king lost it while adventuring at sea.
@@alexanderb5726 True. And in the books Tywin had been trying to obtain another Valyrian steel sword for quite some time. (Isn't Tywin's youngest brother sailing the world in search of Brightroar?)
@@jcompton8507 Gerion yeah, the "funny brother" who took nothing seriously, he boarded the "laughing lion" ship in Lannisport when Tyrion was a boy but hasn't been seen since. He was one of the few who was kind to Tyrion growing up.
A smirk would need a slight twist of the mouth, it was actually more a smug look of satisfaction, as he'd finally replaced his family's lost Valyrian sword, as well as all but extinguished the Stark family line. Insult after insult, after insult, after injury. 💔😭
Notice the subtle differences in Sansa’s beliefs. She always wanted to be a southerner where they worship the Seven, and yet she went to the Godswood where her father would have prayed. It’s possibly the only place she can connect to the north in king’s landing. And then her hair, too. She’s no longer wearing it like a southern lady (all fancy and up) but rather down like how she wore it in the first few episodes. Oh, and with Sansa and Tyrion being married earlier - Tywin had already planned the Red Wedding beforehand and needed the two married for an heir to be born ASAP. Joffrey and Margery’s wedding was always planned to happen after the main war was over, which was mainly the one with Robb for that. And then Cersei and Loras’s was planned to happen after Joffrey’s.
Another way of looking at from Roose Bolton's POV (don't get me wrong I despise the Boltons, but...) : he started to see that despite his early successes, Robb was making bad judgement calls all over the place, and an experienced military man would probably have been able to deduce that Robb's likelihood of winning the war was fading rapidly after doing things like breaking his oath to House Frey, and losing all of the Karstark men. So, if you're Roose Bolton, you eventually have a choice land right in your lap courtesy of Tywin Lannister - stay loyal to your liege lord and if, as signs are indicating, he loses the war, your head can be mounted beside his in Kings Landing and your house will face ruin. OR, betray your liege lord, switch sides, and be rewarded with the wardenship of the entire North, a move that will immediately make your house much more powerful. I will always hate Bolton and his decision, but it can't be argued that it was not a smart and pragmatic one from the point of view of his and his house's survival and prosperity.
Not only that but even if Robb was successful Bolton knows he wouldn't be allowed to do that torture stuff that's on his banners. Robb was good at tactics, but not so good at politics. I've gotta say that story plays on our expectation that everything will work out alright for the heroes, because true love and all that. Of course Talisa is a perfect match for Robb, everything'll be just fine and - ope guess not.
There is also a rivalry that spans millennia between the Starks and the Boltons. The Starks and the Boltons are both descended from the First Men, and both were Kings in their own right in the past - the Kings of Winter and the Red Kings, respectively. They fought each other time and again, and eventually the Boltons surrendered to the Starks and became vassals of Winterfell. It was at this time that the Starks decreed that the Boltons could no longer flay men. The Boltons have been biding their time to make their move against the Starks.
@@Golladan yup...in the books you see this playing out. How Roose cosntantly holds his men back and does little things that constant;y sacrifice other northerners more loyal to house Stark. At the wedding, all the Boltons and Karstarks and Freys knew what was up, everyu other Stark bannermen was getting sloshed and drunk....

One of those guys from the Nights Watch was actually the person who controlled the City Watch in Season 1 and murdered Roberts Bastards and got sent to The Wall by Tyrion early in Season 2.
Pedro Pascal is a great actor. He seems to play all these different roles without effort. In fact, when the crew was asked who is sharing the most characteristic with the character they are portraying, they named Peter Dinklage being as intelligent and witty as Tyrion and Pedro Pascal being a party animal.
I’d say actors adapt to their role, in a similar way people adapt to the other people around them in their environment (if you hang out a lot with someone who uses unique slang words a lot, you might find yourself saying them, too, for example), but I don’t know for certain.
What a great end to the episode - Arya got to strike a name off her list and she got her own horse, while The Hound got his chickens 😊 I love those two together.
Pedro Pascal is an amazing actor, and his characters in GOT and TLOU could NOT be more different...except their love for their families being so fierce. LOVE Pedro.
Tormund wasn't there when she shot him. She just wanted to hurt him because he hurt her, but didn't have it in her to kill him. She's just heart broken.
Tywin was very serious at the beginning, no nonsense here from his part. He understands well a meaning of symbolism at his level (kings, wardens, hands to the king, etc.). Valyrian sword is a very rare thing, and these families, who owns one, treasure them. Even the ones which lack money, sell everything but the Valyrian steel swords. And Lannister family never had one. Tywin waits until everything is finished with Starks and only then proceeds with melting the sword. They could melt the sword before (had it since Season 1). Now Stark family is gone, Tywin made sure of it. Here follows burning of a wolf's fur, a very symbolic action, as wolf is a sigil of House Stark. And here comes the time to get a new Valyrian sword into Lannister family.
Actually, the Lannister family did once have their own House Valyrian Steel sword; it was called "Brightroar", but it was lost a few generations back when an adventurous Lannister took it on a sea voyage, never to be heard of again. The loss has always rankled Tywin, who believes it diminishes the status of his House not to possess such an heirloom.
@@noneofyourbeeswax01 Cool, I probably knew that some time ago, but forgot it. "Adventurous Lannister" rings some bells now, thanks for reminding me of it.
You heard in passing in the early seasons and histories and lores that when King's Landing fell the Lannister army butchered all the Targaryens and Tywin had the two children of the Targaryen Crown Prince dragged out of their beds and put to the sword. Well now you're hearing the same story from the mother's side, Elia Martell of Dorne, who was also killed during the sack of the city. Oberyn is her brother. Pedro Pascal has played some amazing characters in some great shows from Narcos to Mandalorian..but this one just might have his most memorable moment🤐
When Arya gets her first vengeance kill and jaqen h’ghars theme plays in the background as she’s filling with dopamine watching him just gives me chills
The Unsullied have Spartan attributes, but they are much more closely modelled off the Persian Immortals that fought the Spartans at Thermopylae. Old Ghis in GoT is their stand in for the Ancient Persian empires, with Valyria as George's Rome.
7:43 I hate that Robb marrying Talisa is reduced by some faction of the fandom to "he's losing the war because he's horny". The show really did a poor job with that storyline. Remember that Robb literally won every battle. Every single one of them. Against all odds, and to the frustration of the Lannisters.Tha's why Tywin had to up his game and literally cheat to win. Some Stark lords are also not that bright. Lord Karstark wanted to kill Jaime. Suppose Robb had let him. How does that help? How does that advantage The Stark cause? How does it not put Sansa in more danger? And the Boltons didn't betray the Stark because they were frustrated with his bad decision to marry Talisa. They did it overwhelmingly out of ambition. Yes, they probably fear the Lannisters to some degree, but it's ambition that drove Roose. The Boltons have tried to topple the Starks for the North mutliple times in the past.
The show explained it well enough and showed all that was needed, it's just some people to understand what they've seen think it's only "because Talisa", which is not, there is plenty of smart comments about "why" it's happenned under the Red Wedding episode reaction that only provide references to the show scenes, thus no poor job was done
@@nickrubin7312 I strongly disagree. I started reading the books AFTER season 3, ie afer the Red Wedding. As I was watching that episode for the first time, not knowing what was about to happen, I thought it was stupid of Robb to bring his wife. It did not make any sense to me that he would make that decision. Even more so when she's pregnant. I was not surprised to learn that she was not actually there when I read the books. Furthermore, more astute observers and shown only critics picked up on the fact that Robb was marrying a character who from a noble rich family in Essos, and yet was all by herself in the Riverlands, the most war torn part of Westeros. She had no guards, no retinue, and her nameless powerful family gave Robb no aid. Most viewers may not catch that, but the astute one, and a professional critic will. In the books, Robb's wife come from a very modest family, and yet they still supported him in small ways. The reason Robb marries her is also far more compelling. Even if you just look at the show evidence, there's a quite a lot that doesn't make sense. And Essosi & Northere noble getting married in the faith of the Seven does not make sense.
Ser Dontos, the guy who gives the necklace to Sansa, is the last member of House Hollard who had their lands taken away and all of its members executed for taking part in kidnapping the Mad King during what is called the Defiance of Duskendale. Ser Dontos was only a child when it happened and he was only spared because Ser Barristan asked and the Mad King granted this favor since Ser Barristan was the one who saved the king.
Robb's mistakes? Well, not going through with the marriage pact was a big one. Not just because it bent Walder Frey out of shape, but if Robb could go back on his word, a vow that evoked the gods no less, then what wouldn't he go back on? ALL of Robb's bannermen might wonder about that. It definitely opened Robb up towards potential betrayal, something Tywin Lannister was eager and quick to take advantage of. Talisa the character is an invention of the show; but the situation still exists in the books. Robb's wife in the books was Jeyne Westerling, the daughter of one of the Lannister bannermen, whom Robb had taken the Westerling castle to enter the Westerlands to fight on Lannister ground. This was something of a 'Romeo and Juliet' element that the show didn't go for. I think that the dismay of Robb's bannermen over his wife would have made more sense if the writers had just followed the book. Personally, I think that Robb's first and biggest mistake was in allowing himself to become 'King of the North'. When I read the novel, I was initially aghast at it, because it's something Ned would have never done--and he had the opportunity. Robert became king, Ned did not become King of the North. Robb basically turned his back on what his father was imprisoned for and executed for, whether he realized it or not. Becoming King of the North was great for morale and cohesion of the forces early on, but would later act as a wedge between Robb and some of his bannermen and also against potential allies. Honestly, keeping Jaime alive was more trouble than it was worth. Jaime Lannister might not have all of Tyrion's gifts, but he proved quite capable of getting under people's skin. Just as Tyrion could drive divisions against his captors in the heart of the Arryn power; Jaime could ultimately do the same. The Karstark issue over those two Lannister boys was fairly ridiculous. Unfortunately, it might have been the honorable and just--if harsh--response to the murders of captives, but what is done in peace and what is done in war can be two different things. Robb lost a terribly important bannerman. Robb might have listened to his bannermen better. Karstark and Bolton were free with their advice, but Robb rarely paid much heed. Robb didn't communicate his plans well, leading to the problem with his Tully uncle. Again, Robb was willing to let them put a crown on his head which suggests insufficient planning and goals, allowing the bannermen to project their own 'national pride' onto him and his effort; yet, once he allowed them to do that, he no longer paid them much mind.
Kyburn secretly helped Cercei abort as a result of sleeping with Lancel. Cercei needed time to heal before having relations with Jaime. Her anger slipped out from Jaime’s demands because she blames him for her predicament, that his absence caused her cascade of events: “We can’t have relations because I had an abortion with Lancel which wouldn’t have happened if you were here.” This is what she meant by saying, “You’re too late.” And Jaime is clueless.
"People love their king." "They know I saved the city, they know I won the war" and Jaime silently replying "the war is not won". That's how the trailer of Season 4 starts and everyone did the CJ from San Andreas "awww shit here we go again" thinking about how Joffrey is going to troll us for another season 😂. Both the OG trailer and the DVD/blueray trailer feat. Hozier are fantastic. A very uncanny feel to them. The Hozier trailer might be my favorite GoT trailer. Fitting for the GOAT season.
It's really funny how they made the Thenns in the show all barabaric and cannibals. While in the books they like the most peaceful people and is literally vegetarians, don't know if the showrunners did this on purpose just do something fun or if they actually fucked it up that bad XD
Had to laugh a bit when you said, thats' the guy from The Last of Us. Everybody who saw GoT before The Mandalorian and The Last of Us will always say: Wait, ain't that Oberyn?
Right now Russia's war against Ukraine is having global economic impacts. Danaerys has become "Mhysa" mother to all the slaves she freed. Who are her trade partners now that she abolishes slavery? The wars in Westeros must also cost much and more. How does the economy of this world work?
45:55 Love you guys so much! Just maybe watch the use of that word in future - I know Spartan doesn't mean any harm by it but it is a slur for people with disabilities! Keep up the great vids though guys, I'm loving this series.
Pudgey I totally agree the cast change for Daario was such a confusing choice! None of the charisma or mystique appeal of the previous actor’s performance. I don’t believe this version of Daario would catch Dany’s attention while she’s likely still mourning Drogo
An unpopular opinion - I was kind of relieved when Rob’s storyline ended 😭 I always felt like he was a side character (I think someone told me later on that in the books there is no Robert’s POV so that makes sense). Also, some of my “favorite” characters were “bad” - The Hound, Tywin and…please don’t be mad…Cersei 😅 I just love when she lets us in and we get a glimpse of her vulnerability. The Lannisters as a whole are an interesting bunch.
I really don’t like Cersei. But tbf she is a very interesting character. So every scene is great with her. I think sometimes Pudgey could listen a bit more what she has to say instead of just screaming shut up Cersei or Ewwww.
There are a number of factors at play as to why Sansa and Tyrion were quickly wed before the royal wedding. One main reason is Tywin's multi level plan to secure the North. Cersei's spies had figured out that the Tyrell's planned to marry Sansa off after Joffrey married Margaery. Tywin states that he wouldn't allow Sansa to "be taken from him", so it's reasonable to deduce that he planned to marry her off to someone after the war and Joffrey's wedding. Timing therefore was of the essence if he was going to beat the Tyrells to the punch. Another smaller reason was that the royal wedding was more of a big deal and required more work, planning and guest travel. Sansa's wedding to Tyrion was a political maneuver that could be done and over with quickly.
Pudgey saying how she still crys at the red wedding scene and then getting emotional as Spartan talks about it. 🤣 idk I think pudgey may to be innocent to keep watching this
OMG just as they're also watching The Last of Us they also are watching this season. Also, Sansa's wedding occured first as they were preventing her to be married to Loras. Tywin said it.
In the books, it made even more sense because she was being married to Loras's older brother Willas, who was heir to Highgarden and not gay (as far as we know). So she would have been more likely to produce both the heirs to Highgarden and Winterfell, with the Tyrells having power/influence over both kingdoms and Margaery as Queen. Tywin was not going to let the Tyrells have what he wanted for the Lannisters.
Spartan is forever respected for having Tywin on his love list. We all love a good antihero! Arya was never going to help the hound. How would it look if a little girl had to help someone like the hound in a fighting match. She also has a very different outlook on her guardian then we do, so there’s that. Great reaction as always.
23:25 I completely agree that this new Daario is underwhelming compared to the previous one. To this day, I don't understand why his character had to be re-cast. One thing that was always clear to be in the books, is that no matter how attracted Dany is to him, Daario always read as a dangerous man who could potentially be a threat to her. He was bold, and never afraid to speak his mind. The original Daario perfectly captured that. This new Daario feels like he is completely on Dany's side. He doesn't feel like a potential danger to her.
The first Daario chose to leave the show (to be the bad guy in Deadpool) so they didn't have a choice in finding someone else. Obviously the character is too important to just drop. But I have never read a good explanation of why the costuming and writing changed so much. It is especially weird and off putting on rewatch and not having the time inbetween the seasons.
@@musicmucker I don't think it was a case of "wanting" to leave the show, it was my understanding that he was already scheduled to do the Deadpool movie. This is the risk serial shows take when they choose not to renew minor character's contracts until just before they shoot a new season; the actors can't rely on being renewed so will take other good roles when the opportunity arises.
i agree, i preferred the original actor daario from the books is very unique looking and though the OG actor didn't have blue hair (lol), i feel like he captured daario i grew to like the new daario but he just isn't daario to me, he just seems like a normal guy who's good looking but not strangely or otherworldly looking and besides the looks, the original actor seemed way more flashy and sarcastic again, which encompasses book daario second daario's personality was like that occasionally but very rarely and still seemed just like a normal dude daario is NOT a normal dude dany would never like just a 'normal dude' so again, i like the guy andx no hate to the actor but i mostly see second daario not as daario but some random made up normal guy character that fights by dany's side LOL which i like but not as daario

Oberyn will play one great role, and Jon is the TRUE north .... more coming on that! :) For Ser Jaime Lannister's is entry in The Book of Brothers will have to wait, but -- with no spoilers -- it will be nothing short of legendary, written with GREAT CARE by THE Lord Commander of the Kingsguard! "The Book of Brothers, informally called the White Book, is the tome that records the deeds of every knight who has ever served in the three hundred year history of the Kingsguard... The book is kept in the Red Keep in the White Sword Tower, where the knights of the Kingsguard have their sleeping cells. The book is in the uppermost floor of the tower in the room where the seven meet. It is the responsibility of the current Lord Commander of the Kingsguard to update the entries in the book. Each knight who has been made a member of the Kingsguard since the reign of King Aegon I Targaryen has a page within the book detailing his deeds. On the top left-hand corner of the page his personal or family arms are drawn while at the bottom right-hand corner are the arms of the Kingsguard."

Welcome to The Adventures Of Arya And The Hound
This is probably the best season of the show. Perfect mix of writing and production value. Before the show became more about the spectacle and the writers felt that they could do no wrong.
Yes, I think they gloried in their success for the later seasons. But I think they were also bitter and angry that GRRM hadn't finished the books to give them more source material to work with. And you can tell. It all feels a bit tinged with an "I don't give a f*ck about this story and its finer details anymore" attitude towards the writing of it.
@@jcompton8507 What's worse is they actually didn't "ran out of books to adapt", that's a popular thing people say but that's not what happened. Tyrions speech to Sansa is one of the greatest pieces of acting ever. Mostly because everyone missed the meaning. Hear me out. Watch it again when not so emotional. Literally every compliment Tyrion gives to Sansa about her mother is Cersi. They are the only things he likes about Cersi as stated in season 2. He was talking about his sister in the same breath.

The sword is Ned’s sword, Ice. It’s Valyrian Steele, very rare in Westeros and there’s only a few people that know how to melt/reforge it. Tywin has found 1 such person to reforge it into 2 swords of which there will only be a few in all of Westeros

He is one of the few armorers who can work Valyrian steel,[4] and claims to be the only armorer in King's Landing who can add tint to the metals in a suit of armor without using paint.[1] Ser Loras Tyrell and Lord Renly Baratheon are among the nobles who have purchased armor from Tobho... At Lord Tywin Lannister's request Tobho melts Eddard's Valyrian steel sword, Ice, to forge two new swords. The armorer admits that he tried to color the swords the crimson of House Lannister, but despite his spells the steel darkened to grey and red patterns.[4]"
