It's the perfect episode title - Tywin's children were acting up, Dany's children were acting up, the children on the way to the three eyed raven were messed with, the children of the forest came into play, Arya was acting up and left The Hound for dead. I also love that Varys turns away and gets on the boat as soon as he hears the city bells. He wasn't going to leave, but he's said: "I've always hated the bells, they ring for horror."

The hound was like a second father to arya in a way…. It was so painful to watch the scene where he needs to resort to talking her into killing him by lying about the atrocities he’d “do to sansa” and reminding her about her friend…. In the end the hound is the one person arya took off of her list. They were the best pair for me honestly.

Agree fully. Also Calypso didn't react to it, but I love the interaction between Brienne and Sandor: Sandor: You're the wrong one to watch over her. Brienne: And that's what you're doing? Watching over her? Sandor: Aye, that's what I'm doing. I love it so much. And his clear protectiveness over Arya just makes his death 10x more heartbreaking.

Arya's face said it all. She didn't believe all those words. Just stared at him. She only knows what she knows for sure; he killed Micah the butcher boy. For that; she should kill him. However, She also can clearly see that Clegane longs for death because he hates his life; whatever there is left of it. Better to make him suffer. On the other hand; he kept her safe even after it wasn't lucrative anymore, without asking. He stayed his hand when she told him not to just kill someone out of convenience. He could have sold her to any Lannister-soldier but chose to keep her safe. He actually respects her.For that he deserves to live. But whether it be long or short, in pain or in pleasure; Arya doesn't care. Valar Morghulis

There are several ironic deaths in this episode: mighty Tywin dying on the toilet by the hands of his family (by Tyrion directly and Jaime indirectly), Shae literally choking on gold, the Hound losing to someone wearing the best armor money can buy and a Valyrian Steel sword.

Tywin Lannister was an awful human being, but possibly one of the most accomplished men in the Seven Kingdoms. He viciously quashed a rebellion by the Reynes against his father (The Rains of Castamere); served as Hand of the King for 20 years, a peaceful rule he managed while Aerys slowly descended into madness; stepped down as Hand before Robert’s Rebellion and didn’t involve himself until the very end when he sacked King’s Landing; married off his daughter to the new King and ensured his grandchildren would sit on the Iron Thrones. But for all his successes he couldn’t recognize the talents and skills of his own son because of how he was born, and the way he treated Tyrion all his life led to his downfall.

@EncryptedBear8

@@shinrapresident7010 Tywin hated Tyrion since his birth and got off on seeing him suffer. The show never reveals the real reason why Tyrion went back to kill Tywin. They told us the story of Tyrion's first wife Tysha in S1 and never revealed the plot twist. She really was just a common girl that was saved by Tyrion and they fell in love and married. When Tywin found out he had Jaime lie about her being a prostitute set up on purpose for Tyrion to have his first time, then he had his men and Tyrion himself r*pe her and give her a coin to show that she was indeed a prostitute (which she wasn't). Great father. Don't think he ever did something just out of love for his children. And now he is bedding Shae, getting off on the thought that Tyrion loved her and he is the reason that Tyrion would be executed. Also it's said in the books that there is a secret tunnel to the brothel which a former hand had built to secretely go there and it's strongly implied it was Tywin. He is a hypocrite and narcisist who only cared about himself and his legacy, not even his family. Overall an absolutely terrible human being, probably the most evil Lannister. Charles Dance just portrays the character in a way that makes him seem somewhat likeable

I think the fight between Brienne and The Hound is one of the most impressive fights in the entire series. And they were both trying to protect Arya in the process. They both had the same goal. Imagine what they could have done if they had joined forces instead of fighting each other so viciously! Instead we leave The Hound at death's door on the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. And at least there is one person who truly loves Tyrion - his brother. As for Stannis, Maester Aemon sent out the letters asking for help, and Ser Davos read it and brought it to Stannis's attention, and Melisandre agreed it was important. I assume the Watch actually just let them through. Unless they arrived by ship if they were coming from Dragonstone, since it is an island. I haven't read the books, so I don't know for sure. But the Watch letting them through makes more sense as far as them knowing where to find the camp?

One of my top 3 favorite finales. Tywin played his last game of thrones on a throne. You win or you die. Fun fact: the finale aired on Father’s Day in 2014. Another Emmy Award worthy performance for Peter Dinklage! The reason he didn’t leave immediately was Tyrion wanted to confront Tywin on why he sentenced him to die knowing he was innocent. Tyrion was willing to risk his chance of escape to gain closure on the issue. Some months later after Father’s Day, they showed the last two episodes of Season 4 in select IMAX theaters! The surround sound system was incredible! Because of that and even though I already seen it, the sound of that crossbow going off startled me! Jumped out of my seat a little.

Rhaegal is the green one and Viserion is the cream and gold one: “… I would name them all for those the gods have taken. The green one shall be Rhaegal, for my valiant brother who died on the green banks of the Trident. The cream-and-gold I call Viserion. Viserys was cruel and weak and frightened, yet he was my brother still. His dragon will do what he could not.” “And the black beast?” asked Ser Jorah Mormont. “The black,” she said, “is Drogon.” A Clash of Kings: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Two

This is one of my favorites. I think The Children's reputation has elevated a lot more in retrospect and nowdays everyone say it's their fav, back then it never used to make those GoT top 5 episode lists. But yeah it's def a top 5, might be top 3. I look at the Tyrion escape as that tiny silver lining inside a world of pitch black darkness. It's so tiny, but so bright! The rare upbeat Stark music at the end always gets me. You know this is peak GoT when you have that extended shot of Tyrion and Shae lying in bed, in that "head to head" position from every Y/A movie poster ever. Think Fault In Our Stars...except one has just choked out the other. You can't make this shit up 😂
@dustinaltenhurst7958

If we do a top three actors list for GoT Charles Dance has to be in it. Not talking about the characters, there's other GoT characters you probably like more, but acting wise my GoT top three ranking is Alfie Allen, Liam Cunningham and Charles Dance (honorary mention to Dinklage, Lena Headey and Jack Gleeson). But Charles Dance is S-tier. What a way to bow out!

In the book its even more humilliating. He emptied his bowels the moment Tyrion shot him and the day after the corpse stinks fucking terrible lol "Lord Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold." Stannis sailed north of the Wall and then marched to the wilding camp, yes. He did it because of Aemon and Sam's letter and Melisandre's warning. His endgame focus are the White Walkers now. 3:50 It still pissed me off that the Three-Eyed Raven in the show has both eyes. It completely ruins the line about "thousand eyes and one"; it's a reference to the joke about his true identity. They either shouldn't have used that line, or put some make-up on his to make it seem like he's missing one eye (which would be my preferrable option).

In the first four seasons, which stayed pretty close the books, Shae's character was arguably the most changed. She wasn't written as sympathetic and in love with Tyrion as she is in the show. However, despite changing her a lot, they insisted in giving her character the exact same conclusion, which made little sense given how they portrayed her before the trial.
@mamakat114
@mamakat114 2 года назад
My guess is that at Joffrey's pre-wedding dinner when Cersei showed Tywin who Shae was and he said "have her brought to the tower of the hand" so when Braun & Tyrion thought she left Kings Landing, she was actually being ',held' by Tywin. So then by the trial, he had power over Shae and that is why she testified against Tyrion.

Even though I started watching this show mainly because he was in it, this was the episode which convinced me that Peter Dinklage is quite possibly the greatest actor of our age. I know that some episodes like this are hard to watch, the emotional roller coaster is good to purge feelings and I believe that you will find, as did I, that it is very cathartic to experience everything this show has to offer. I'm glad that you have chosen to continue this far. I know that you will be a lot like I was with my first time. As painful as it was to watch each episode, the most painful was when the series ended and I knew there was no more to come (although I am excited for the spinoffs coming up from HBO. It’s very understandable Arya and Hound wouldn’t trust Brienne, considering everything they’ve been through… And especially the fact that they haven’t seen Brienne’s journey like we have. The Hound may as well even be correct… There’s no telling where Arya would’ve ended up with Brienne, no matter her good intentions. And at the same time, it only makes sense Brienne isn’t going to just be like “understandable, have a nice day” and leave them be. She has sworn to protect Arya, and she doesn’t know The Hound and his nature. No one is really right or wrong, but a cooperation between them is an impossibility and the clash inevitable.

Varys getting the hell up outta there as he hears the bells tolling to signify they've found the body of the Hand tells you all you need to know about how important this death is. Even Varys decides his skin isn't worth the shark pond of King's Landing anymore. Make no mistake this is probably the single most important death based on the political repercussions it has for Westeros. Like Ned and Robb's death hit me a lot harder on a character level, but this one is the most consequential.

A Storm of Swords - Tyrion XI: ( Shae, Tywin ) ..........................That was the worst thing you could have said, sweetling. Tyrion slid a hand under his father's chain, and twisted. The links tightened, digging into her neck. "For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman's hands are warm," he said. He gave cold hands another twist as the warm ones beat away his tears. Afterward he found Lord Tywin's dagger on the bedside table and shoved it through his belt. A lion-headed mace, a poleaxe, and a crossbow had been hung on the walls. The poleaxe would be clumsy to wield inside a castle, and the mace was too high to reach, but a large wood-and-iron chest had been placed against the wall directly under the crossbow. He climbed up, pulled down the bow and a leather quiver packed with quarrels, jammed a foot into the stirrup, and pushed down until the bowstring cocked. Then he slipped a bolt into the notch..........Waddling to the door, he listened a moment, then eased it open slowly. A lamp burned in a stone niche, casting wan yellow light over the empty hallway. Only the flame was moving. Tyrion slid out, holding the crossbow down against his leg. He found his father where he knew he'd find him, seated in the dimness of the privy tower, bedrobe hiked up around his hips. At the sound of steps, Lord Tywin raised his eyes. Tyrion gave him a mocking half bow. "My lord." "Tyrion." If he was afraid, Tywin Lannister gave no hint of it. "Who released you from your cell?" "I'd love to tell you, but I swore a holy oath." "The eunuch," his father decided. "I'll have his head for this. Is that my crossbow? Put it down." "Will you punish me if I refuse, Father?" "This escape is folly. You are not to be killed, if that is what you fear. It's still my intent to send you to the Wall, but I could not do it without Lord Tyrell's consent. Put down the crossbow and we will go back to my chambers and talk of it." "We can talk here just as well. Perhaps I don't choose to go to the Wall, Father. It's bloody cold up there, and I believe I've had enough coldness from you. So just tell me something, and I'll be on my way. One simple question, you owe me that much." "I owe you nothing." "You've given me less than that, all my life, but you'll give me this. What did you do with Tysha?" "Tysha?" [ He does not even remember her name ]. "The girl I married."......"You do not have the courage." "Shall we find out? It's a short word, and it seems to come so easily to your lips." Tyrion gestured impatiently with the bow. "Tysha. What did you do with her, after my little lesson?" "I don't recall." "Try harder. Did you have her killed?" His father pursed his lips. "There was no reason for that, she'd learned her place . . . and had been well paid for her day's work, I seem to recall. I suppose the steward sent her on her way. I never thought to inquire." "On her way where?" "Wherever whores go." Tyrion's finger clenched. The crossbow whanged just as Lord Tywin started to rise. The bolt slammed into him above the groin and he sat back down with a grunt. The quarrel had sunk deep, right to the fletching. Blood seeped out around the shaft, dripping down into his pubic hair and over his bare thighs. "You shot me," he said incredulously, his eyes glassy with shock. "You always were quick to grasp a situation, my lord," Tyrion said. "That must be why you're the Hand of the King." "You . . . you are no . . . no son of mine." "Now that's where you're wrong, Father. Why, I believe I'm you writ small. Do me a kindness now, and die quickly. I have a ship to catch." For once, his father did what Tyrion asked him. The proof was the sudden stench, as his bowels loosened in the moment of death. Well, he was in the right place for it, Tyrion thought. But the stink that filled the privy gave ample evidence that the oft-repeated jape about his father was just another lie. Lord Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold.

When you think about it, the end of this season marks the end of people knowing what they're doing. Tywin, a horrible person but supremely capable leader, is dead, leaving the Seven Kingdoms without competent rule. His children have neither his level of authority, nor respect, nor actual skill when it comes to running a country. Tommen is a boy at the mercy of his surrounding influences. Tyrion is heading away into absolute uncertainty, and the situation is so volatile Varrys just decides in the moment to drop his entire role in King's Landing and leaves with him. Daenerys locks up her Dragons. This is basically her locking up her identity. Without spoiling Season 5, Daenerys wants to rule, but she hasn't learned how yet, and her learning curve is severely stagnated, because these are the kind of decisions she makes to make up for perceived faults. Sansa is playing Littlefingers game, much like Daenerys without any experience in what she is doing. Arya essentially escapes to Bravos, also into absolute uncertainty. Brann's storyline has always been about mystery, Jojenn was the only one who seemed to have a true understanding, he's also dead now. Stannis uprooted everything to go help out the Night's Watch. The Night's Watch at this point consists of maybe fifty men, a broken organization by any definition. The only people who are still exactly where they planned to be are people like Littlefinger or Roose Bolton. Traitors and turncloacks, responsible for a lot of the chaos that brought down other, more stabilizing forces. So yeah... guess what Season Five is going to be like. Nobody knows what the hell is going on, half the main cast is either dead or lost, the rest are fumbling through chaos and adversity.

Tywin Lannister "morally questionable"? Where was the question? He tormented his own son his entire life, including making him watch the gang rape of the only woman who ever loved him for him. He ordered the Mountin and the Brave Companions to "ravage the Riverlands" noting fully well what they were not only capable of, but thoroughly enjoyed doing. Yeah, Charles Dance made that character his own, but there's no questioning the morality of Lord Tywin Lannister. 😉

Although I did post on Facebook after watching it: "Brienne of f'ing Tarth" Dragons are: Drogon (the black one), named for Khal Drogo Viseryon (the bluish gold one), named for her brother, Viserys Rhaegon (the greenish one), named for her brother, Rhaegal - the same Rhaegal that's accused of stealing Lyanna Stark away and murdering her by Robert Baratheon

An interesting conversation between Ser Barristan and Daenerys from the books. Nothing to do with the show. Daenerys: And my father? Was there some woman he loved better than his queen? Barristan: Not ... not loved. Mayhaps wanted is a better word, but ... it was only kitchen gossip, the whispers of washerwomen and stableboys ... Daenerys: I want to know. I never knew my father. I want to know everything about him. The good and ... the rest. Barristan: As you command. Prince Aerys ... as a youth, he was taken with a certain lady of Casterly Rock, a cousin of Tywin Lannister. When she and Tywin wed, your father drank too much wine at the wedding feast and was heard to say that it was a great pity that the lord's right to the first night had been abolished. A drunken jape, no more, but Tywin Lannister was not a man to forget such words, or the ... the liberties your father took during the bedding. Aerys was kind of a man who gets any woman he want. Tywin still continued to be Aerys' Hand. But later on they fell apart due to some reasons and Tywin resigned from the post of Hand of the King and went back to Casterly Rock. Could that be because mad king did something to Tywin's wife? Later on we know that she dies giving birth to Tyrion and then Tywin hating Tyrion for rest of his life.

I don't like the theory of Tyrion being a secret Targaryen because I feel like it ruins the genuine father-son relationship he and Tywin have. Turns it into just "my wife was raped/cheated, you remind me of that and I hate you" instead of the "you killed my wife, you are a dwarf, and you reflect what I hate about myself, so I despise you"

I think I never saw a reactor so invested in Tyrion and Share relationship or Jon and Ygrette, people sadly tend to hate Shae and Ygrette and forget the beautiful love story behind Now, an Amazon season has come to an end, and its the last season completaly based no the books, the next ones will have some parts of it and some GRRM ideas, leaving this aside, the next seasons on my opinion are atill great, so many grrat moments like this episode are waiting for you, season 5 can be consideres a little bit calm and slow compare to this season, it feels like a season 2 vibes because things go slow and building up for future season but season 5 is darker , I think you will love it since it has more Daenerys things (I’ve noticed you like Daenerys). Well, enjoy the rest of the ride!!!

The season starts with Tywin melting Ned's sword, at the peak of his power. Renly killed, Stannis defeated, Robb murdered, Greyjoys almost forced out of the North...it felt like House Lannister was finally the unchallenged master of the Seven Kingdoms. The season ends with Tywin's downfall, not at the hand of any enemy, but brought down by his own hubris, murdered by his own son. During the last moments of his life Tywin finally has to come to terms with the fact that his grandchildren are bastards of incest. For someone who valued family legacy more than the actual family, that had to be a devastating blow knowing his grandsons were not legitimate heirs to the throne. His victory is built on quicksand. This episode is fittingly titled "The Children" for the Children of the Forest, but it's also about Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion each in their own ways rebelling against the Lannister patriarch, with the last one being fatal. A season ago Tyrion had a great line, "Seven Kingdoms united in the fear of Tywin Lannister". Tywin held together a country in civil war with sheer force of personality. Now that glue is gone. Now that "gaping pit" has opened up. Or as they say it's time for the Crows to Feast.

It's a brutal world and all sides commit their share of atrocities, but there's something to be said about how callously dismissive Tywin, one of the most "civilized" men in the Seven Kingdoms, was when he heard of Shae's death. Almost like she wasn't worthy of being dignified as a human being. Contrast that with the compassion with which Mance the "savage" reacted to Pyp and Grenn's death.
