The problem with Tywin is that, as a cerebral man, the affective and emotional sides of people and situations are not included in his calculations, which is always a huge, huge mistake. Human behaviour is unpredictable, chaotic, and cannot be reduced to a set of sharp chess moves, no matter how brilliant they may be. Littlefinger, on the contrary, does use chaos and human feelings in his equations ("chaos is a ladder"), as the reckless player he is.

On Shae: I think the writers shot themselves in the foot with the changes they made to her character tbh. In making her love/care for Tyrion, not only does it make her later betrayals even _more_ vicious, they feel borderline out-of-character. Especially when she also throws Sansa under the bus, despite the show taking great pains to develop her motherly, protective bond towards her. Idk. It reads like a writing fumble, like they were awkwardly trying to bridge her book-self with the character they wrote for the show before Kings Landing. Even if we're supposed to believe she was just _that_ jealous and angry, it feels like extremely disproportionate retribution for something that her show-self _really should have understood._ In trying to make Shae feel more complex than she was in the books, they made her less consistent and coherent as a character instead. Not really an improvement imo.

Joffrey turned out that way because Cersei is a bad mother who let her son get away with everything and taught him he could behave and do anything he wanted because he was a prince/king. Robert and Jamie were also not good father figures because they didn't care enough to teach him shit. He also might have turned out that way because he was a product of incest. If Cersei wasn't such an idiot she would have taught him right and smacked/punished him when he acted up. Tyrion tried to teach him respect a few times with a smack but by that point it was too late and Joffrey was already set in his ways.

@@jesses5463 no he ended up that way because his mother was a monster who never taught him any values or morals. Both his parents were disgusting parents who created a monster.

@@kylethompson3008 I've known tons of kids who have been allowed to get away with anything and they didn't turn out like this. Joffrey is a clear example of the effect domestic violence can have on a child. In this case, domestic violence from a bad uncle.

Her anger played a huge role in this though, revengeful attitude to the max basically, she said like 100 things more than she could have on this occasion, being way too hateful than Tyrion ever deserved. Completely unredeemable after this betrayal, regardless of how Tywin and Cersei may have approached her. That was awful to watch.

Shae never understood the real danger she was in, while she was with Tyrion. She thought she'd been flat out rejected, but really should have known better.
