Mine is in the next episode, I believe. It's the one between him and Pedro Pascal in the Dungeon. When he hears about when he was a baby and when he says Cersei always wanted him dead and Cersei always gets her wish. He seems so broken, so... done... And then when the prince says he will be his champion, for a second , Tyrion's eyes clear says "Oh, don't f*ck with me, don't give me hope"... That scene still destroys me to THIS DAY

True. Peter Dinklage is such a good actor. All those emotions on his face were just heartbreaking. They both loved each other and they're both hurt. And I think Cercei played a big role in that too. The idea behind a trial by combat was that the gods would protect your if you were innocent. So if you win, that's the gods saying that you're innocent of the crime. If you die, then you must have been guilty, and you end up with the death penalty by default.

I know Varys testifying hurts because he has been so close to Tyrion, but remember what he said when Tyrion wanted him to lie about Shae. He has no one to help, protect, or avenge him if he is in trouble. He simply cannot afford to risk his position since he wants to help the Realm. He also does NOT deny what Tyrion asks him and if you watch his face you can see some pain/sorrow in his eyes while he looks at Tyrion before he puts his game face back on to answer. I think he really does care about Tyrion and HATES to testify against him, but he has no choice. It is the saddest part to me because the part with Shae doesn't make me sad. It makes me furious. Tyrion's heartbreak is awful and I am sad for him, but not in that moment. in that moment all I feel is blinding rage towards Shae for lying and sentencing him to death with her words. >n>
@darth856
@darth856 4 года назад
Another thing about Varys' testimony is that he doesn't say anything that was shared in confidence between him and Tyrion. Both Tywin and Cersei were present at the small council meeting when Tyrion threatened Joffrey. So by mentioning this, which other people already know about, he makes himself look like he is anti-Tyrion while actually not worsening his position at all. Very clever.
@ashleyl3699
@ashleyl3699 2 года назад
" I think he really does care about Tyrion and HATES to testify against him, but he has no choice." Tyrion also asks if Varys has forgotten when he told Tyrion that without Tyrion the city would have been defeated and that Varys would not forget it, and Varys looks straight at him and very seriously says "i never forget a thing." that's Varys trying to subtly communicate that he is still Tyrion's ally and is going to try to help him, although Tyrion doesn't pick up on it. and sure enough, Varys is the one who helps Tyrion escape King's Landing after he loses his trial.

They really softened Shae's testimony in the show, in the book she basically pretends to be some innocent girl that Tyrion forced into prostitution on her wedding day before killing her betrothed, and she also accuses him of having some huge evil conspiracy to take the throne from Tommen: "They plotted it together," she said, this girl he'd loved. "The Imp and Lady Sansa plotted it after the Young Wolf died. Sansa wanted revenge for her brother and Tyrion meant to have the throne. He was going to kill his sister next, and then his own lord father, so he could be Hand for Prince Tommen. But after a year or so, before Tommen got too old, he would have killed him too, so as to take the crown for his own head." "How could you know all this?" demanded Prince Oberyn. "Why would the Imp indulge such plans to his wife's maid?" "I overheard some, m'lord," said Shae, "and m'lady let things slip too. But most I had from his own lips. I wasn't only Lady Sansa's maid. I was his whore, all the time he was here in King's Landing. On the morning of the wedding, he dragged me down where they keep the dragon skulls and fucked me there with the monsters all around. And when I cried, he said I ought to be more grateful, that it wasn't every girl who got to be the king's whore. That was when he told me how he meant to be king. He said that poor boy Joffrey would never know his bride the way he was knowing me." She started sobbing then. "I never meant to be a whore, m'lords. I was to be married. A squire, he was, and a good brave boy, gentle born. But the Imp saw me at the Green Fork and put the boy I meant to marry in the front rank of the van, and after he was killed he sent his wildlings to bring me to his tent. Shagga, the big one, and Timett with the burned eye. He said if I didn't pleasure him, he'd give me to them, so I did. Then he brought me to the city, so I'd be close when he wanted me. He made me do such shameful things . . . " Prince Oberyn looked curious. "What sorts of things?" "Unspeakable things." As the tears rolled slowly down that pretty face, no doubt every man in the hall wanted to take Shae in his arms and comfort her. "With my mouth and . . . other parts, m'lord. All my parts. He used me every way there was, and . . . he used to make me tell him how big he was. My giant, I had to call him, my giant of Lannister." Oswald Kettleblack was the first to laugh. Boros and Meryn joined in, then Cersei, Ser Loras, and more lords and ladies than he could count. The sudden gale of mirth made the rafters ring and shook the Iron Throne. "It's true," Shae protested. "My giant of Lannister." The laughter swelled twice as loud. Their mouths were twisted in merriment, their bellies shook. Some laughed so hard that snot flew from their nostrils. _I saved you all,_ Tyrion thought. _I saved this vile city and all your worthless lives._ There were hundreds in the throne room, every one of them laughing but his father. Or so it seemed. Even the Red Viper chortled, and Mace Tyrell looked like to bust a gut, but Lord Tywin Lannister sat between them as if made of stone, his fingers steepled beneath his chin.

@@darth856 It really wasn't Shae's fault that Tyrion forgot he was paying for the girlfriend experience. The Lannisters also have a history of treating smallfolk badly, is it really very likely Tywin Lannister nicely asked a lowborn sex worker to do what he wanted? It's important to remember that she was only seen from Tyrion's PoV. He projects his first wife baggage onto her and actively ignores Shae's flaws the entire time he knew her. Tyrion isn't as cruel as the rest of his family to smallfolk, but he still has moments of insensitivity throughout the series. Plus Shae was in her early-mid teens while Tyrion was in his mid-late 20s, the age gap alone would make for some imbalance.

She is vindictive and HATES Tyrion, and she also loves her children. She knows she can play the 'sad mother' card to try and garner sympathy. Just because she IS genuinely sad and loves her children doesn't mean she isn't expressing it to specific people to try and sway the trial. She is very good at that sort of thing. Tywin, not Cercei is in total control of everything, including forcing Shae to go against Tyrion! Tywin always holds all the stings! 3 years late but I doubt it. "Show Bronn" (maybe not book Bronn) appears to have more loyalty to Tyrion than is normal for a sellsword. Bronn says she makes it to the ship. There is no reason to doubt that. It's only after Joffrey dies that Tywin says close all the city gates, SEIZE the ships in the harbor, and lock the city down. Bronn never said he saw the ship sail away.

Dany is learning that blasting her way through cities doesn't make you right, and conquering lands and freeing slaves doesn't make you someone able to rule. If she is to one day be ruling the Seven Kingdoms in Westeros, then she needs to learn something that even Tywin has said, that conquering and ruling are not one and the same, and that actions have consequences. She wants to rule Westeros because her birthright was stolen from her, but what about the birthrights of others that her actions are taking away from. One has to wonder, how is her taking back the throne justice, but others doing the same for their birthrights are not. Who gets to decide that? Does she get to excuse herself? These are things that rulers have to think about and Dany has been on a bit of a power trip that she does need some real perspective that ruling isn't always about things being black and white, life is often more grey. And as for Shae, I think there is something you have to understand. To her, Tyrion essentially tossed her away. As the quote says, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Shae stayed and endured it all for Tyrion, because she loved him so much, she was willing to risk anything for him. But he was not willing to risk everything, to give up this game of thrones that he's so good at, to be with her. And instead, he chose the life of King's Landing and this game of politics, over a life he could have had with her. Maybe she was naive, maybe it was stupid of her to think this way, but she loved him so much, and he made a choice, politics over her, all the while trashing her and hurting her and saying all those things to her. She was hurt, she was in pain, to her, Tyrion did not love her strongly enough to fight for them as she would have for them, and in many ways, he had betrayed her. So no doubt when Cersei's people likely found her, she accepted the offer to turn on Tyrion. Because if he was going to hurt her, then she was going to hurt him back. Much like what Ygritte felt when Jon had left her behind. And as Shae had told him during the trial, "I am a whore" - that's what he said to her, and if that's all she was going to be to him, then that's what she was going to act like. He would answer her pain with his pain and she would protect him or Sansa any longer. She once told Sansa to trust no one because life is safer that way, but she trusted Tyrion and trusted in their love, and he ended up turning on that.

@jcompton8507 6 лет назад
Tyrion hurt Shae's feelings, and maybe broke her heart (if she genuinely loved him). Shae is helping to sentence him to *death,* which to me is completely inexcusable. It's like the people who murder their significant others for cheating on them. She's just being less direct about it. And it's not the same as with Jon and Ygritte. Jon was essentially a captive trying to pretend he was a turncoat, and Ygritte always suspected he was still loyal to the Watch. She knew it might happen; she just hoped his loyalty to her would outweigh his loyalty to the Watch and it didn't. And, unlike Shae, she didn't try to kill him - especially by lying to get him killed. Ygritte just shot him with a few arrows. ;-)

Diana Gero - No? Maybe not. BUT - what happens when Sansa and Tyrion have children? What happens when Tyrion falls in love with his wife (!) - which he would, someday. I do apologise if you don't think I'm not fair not trusting a whore - any more than I'd trust a pimp.

Yes, but Tyrion did that to protect her, he knew Cersei was onto her because he noticed Cersei watching Shae at the pre wedding dinner. He loved her so much and knew she wouldn't leave him willingly so he said those things on purpose to push her away and keep her safe. Unfortunately, it backfired.

@@digitalthunder9927I still feel he really loved her and look what happened the last time Tyrion found love-he actually married her and his father destroyed that. This would have been the same story. If they had run away together I think Tywin would have made it his mission to track them down, I don't feel he chose the game over her, I honestly think he didn't want anything to happen to her and he was telling the truth, he's a Lannister, she's a whore, it never would have worked, he tragically fell in love with the wrong person. If she had listened to Varys it would have been avoided. The while thing is just sad.💔

Regarding your discussion of Littlefinger to kick things off - I was re-visiting episode 3.4 when Varys and Olenna were talking... Varys: Littlefinger is not long for the capital. A confidant of mine has told me that when he goes, SANSA STARK GOES WITH HIM. Olenna: And why have you come to me with this matter? Varys: Littlefinger was born with no lands, no wealth, no armies. He has acquired the first two. How long before he has the army? Perhaps you'll laugh, but I know him better than most and this is the truth. Littlefinger is one of the most dangerous men in Westeros. If Robb Stark falls, SANSA STARK IS THE KEY TO THE NORTH. Olenna: And if Littlefinger marries her, he'll have the key in his pocket. Varys: Which seems such a shame. Why should a man with such a low reputation STEAL AWAY such a lovely bride? Olenna: You must despise him. You're working so hard to undermine him. Varys: Actually, I rather enjoy him. But HE WOULD SEE THIS COUNTRY BURN IF HE COULD BE KING OF THE ASHES. Just working this through in my head...So they arrange for Sansa to marry Loras to thwart LF's ambitions. LF tells Cersei which prompts Tywin to step in and arrange for Cersei to marry Loras and Tyrion to marry Sansa. LF and Olenna plot to poison Joffrey and LF escapes King's Landing with Sansa - which is what he wanted all along?? Whoa...

The frame job that's being portrayed is based on evidence that actually happened. Tyrion said everything that the witnesses stated he said (save some embellishments from Cersei and straight lies from Shae). Tyrion played his hand very poorly when he was not in positions to do so,and it's coming back to bite him during this trial. He could have minimized his profile after r being relieved of duties as the Hand, but instead kept on with his bravado, speaking as a powerful man to those who hated him. He's innocent of the charge of regicide, but gave every piece of ammunition to those who wanted to string him up.
@samansu9106
@samansu9106 6 лет назад
Well not really... Only 1 piece of evidence is presented from when he was not Hand of the King and that is Varys'. All the other things happened while he was Hand. The comment about 'Kings dying like flies' was bad, but he was very upset and emotional at the moment. He would have been better off not saying it, but his emotions got the better of him. Otherwise he had screwed himself with Cersei, Trant, and Pycelle LONG before losing his position. He was screwed if any of them testified.

Hey guys if you want more backstory narrated by the actual actors from the show you should look up Game of Thrones History and lore on youtube, there's one for every season released. If you dont want spoilers you should watch them in the order of 1, 2, 3 and so on, they even speak of events prior to the start of the show which gives a nice bit of backstory to many of the characters. :)

The Dance of Dragons one is absolutely the best. As much as I love the Stark family, the history of the Targaryen family from Aegon's Conquest on down is fascinating. I would however avoid watching anything extracurricular, even the History and Lore videos, until you're up to date on the show. There are history videos on RU-vid that have big spoilers randomly thrown in just because they are popular fan theories and such. Just like right smack dab in the middle of the videos there's a "And we all know Bran's direwolf is actually a unicorn bear". So be careful.

I would add that having the actors read the histories makes it even better than just history. It reinforces both the identity of the character and the importance of perspective. And it's acting and art. Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) was just a kid in the early seasons, but his reading is extraordinary.

The only plan Dany has ever known for her life is to take back the Iron Throne, in whatever way that meant and with whatever role she was meant to play. But once her brother died and her dragons were born, she took that to mean restoring their family dynasty was now her responsibility. So for the last 2 seasons, learning to rule wasn't the primary focus, it was gaining the resources she needed to get to Westoros. But when she came across Slaver's Bay, she saw what she wanted to do with all the power she was gaining. She wanted to help the slaves. She wanted to set them free and the most obvious way to do so was to get rid of the slavers. Now she's learning how complicated ruling systems are, all the while trying to fit into a new role, and recognize the flaws she has. I'm not excusing her actions; crucifying the masters was a bad move. But prejudice, however justified, is a trap we ALL fall into and have to watch out for every day.

part of Theon's torture was being made to believe his family was behind his capture. i think this plays big part in his wanting to stay, not just being so broken mentally and physically mutilated. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that speech at the end definitely top of my list of endings for an episode right to the stare down between Tywin and Tyrion. Tyrion is just at the end of his rope and done with that sham of a trial and knew his father knew he was innocent and the best way to stick it to him was to take away the thing he wanted most from Jaime.

Its a tough scene, brutal at times, but brilliantly done. That speech at the end had been waiting to erupt out of Tyrion for his entire life. Going back to the beginning of your video, what makes Littlefinger so effective is how good he is at predicting the actions of others. He isn't solely responsible for the war, but he set everything in motion, accurately predicting what Ned Stark and the Lannisters would do. It is likely that his immediate purpose was to get Ned out of the way, but as we know he wants everything. As you can see, Ramsay isn't the same sort as Joffrey, not exactly. Joffrey was a coward and an idiot, where Ramsay is neither. Like many psychopaths on the extreme end of the spectrum, he lacks any capacity for fear and as such has no limits. The giant statue in Braavos was modeled after the Colossus of Rhodes in ancient Greece. Pretty cool! Davos really came through, he is a brilliant diplomat.

I know everyone are in awe with the speech that Tyrion gave, but the subtle theme of this episode is that Iron Bank owns everybody, and they don't really care who is in charge if they get their money back. They just fund (give a credit) campaing or claim of anyone who can give their money back or fulfill certain promises, and untill the debt is paid they just own this lord or lady, king or queen. If they don't get their gold back - they just fund a competitor. Such a ruthless organization.

Considering his options Tyrion made the best choice he could've to survive in my opinion. Even if he had taken his father's deal and been sent to the wall, he wouldn't have any power or influence anymore so he'd be fair game for anyone(say his extremely rich and powerful sister) to have some thug or desperate prisoner relieve him of his head for a nice reward and make it look like a random act of violence. This way if he wins, he's basically back to how he was before. He wasn't exactly well liked before all this so a kingslayer stigma wouldn't hurt much worse and his sister already wanted to kill him before (still think she hired the kingsguard during the battle to do it). If he loses he dies, but Tywin loses his best chance to get his heir back. Also Tywin totally planned to have Jaime make that deal from the get go, dude said "done" way too quick without even thinking.

.... also in regards to Jamie if you read the books you'll know a bit about his past, about how he only ever wanted to be an honorable knight like his heeoes, Sir Barristan Selmy and Sir Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning. Jamie was a romantic and he loved virtue and honor .He love and respected Prince Rhaegar and the hope from a better future he saw in the royal heir. The last person to speak to Prince Rhaegar before he left to battle Robert at the Trident was Jamie. The prince knew the young boy's heart was good and true and promised him upon his return that is raining Prince he would set into motion changes that would affect the kingdom for the betterment of the people. The hope of that future died with Rhaegar. And with the killing of the Mad King Jamie turned his back indecency honesty integrity. But like Tyrion,Jamie was born to be a decent person and acring person and his disillusion and disappointment he never truly gave up on his true self. Parts of it would be briefly exposed when he interacted with his brother who he loved. I suspect he gets that decency and goodness from his dead mother Joanna, just as Tyrion does. Jamie was seduced by his sister at a young age. and when his mother found out, she was horrified. Joanna knowing her daughter better than most, separated them both and sent Jamie to King's Landing getingt him away from his sister. Because while Jamie seemed to favor his mother more than his father. Cersei seemed to emulate certain qualities of her distant, cruel, and amoral father but to a degree that was frightening. Jamie was punished for killing the Mad King and branded kingslayer and treated as pariah even though what he did was decent and right. After that he turned his back on honor and dignity because of what it cost him to do the right thing. After that it was easier for him to lose sight of his true self. Doing terrible things and ignore his conscience. It wasn't until he met Brianna of Tarth that he wss reminded of the person he was(and might have been) before he turned his back on honor. Cerci is a sickness bringing out the worst parts of his anger, self lothing, and shame. She has over the years Twisted him into something that she can use and her fection for him is limited to his usefulness to her. Brianna on the other hand, remind him of the man he might have been. And to his surprise that part of him is not dead, it's only been quiet till now. It's speaking to him for the first time in a long time. With Jamie you're seeing a struggle between the person he allowed himself to be twisted into and the honorable man he wanted to be. When Jamie lost his hand it was the foundation of his identity. He was only a sword only only an unthinking unfeeling tool. With the taking of his hand he can no longer hold a sword and he could no longer be used as a tool. This ishattering his identity that he assumed when his beliefs were destroyed and he turned his back on who he thought he was...only a KingSlayer, only a tool. It nearly destroyed him and would have if not for one thing. it was Breiana was there to help him recover some semblance of his true self. First, to belp Jaime find the courage to survive when he saw no reason to go on. She was a mirror and she made Jimmy look at himself she was not the first person to make him feel ashamed and angry at himself but she was the first person to make him want to change and fill those neglected parts of himself with something better, kinder and stronger. The show has a way of changing peoples minds about characters. Death is whimsical on the show. Everyone seems to walk around with the Grim Reaper shadowing them with a hand firmly on each person shoulder, to be snatched away at a moments notice. The good suffer and are punished for their virtue to die at the hands of less worthy. The wicked and terrible seem to endure and thrive on the misery they create for the good, but only for a time as I said death is whimsical, but seems to take more deliberate interest and punishing the unrepentant when their time comes and they are called to task it's usually more horrible for those who have been horrible. Some live long enough to learn from their mistakes. For the good, it is to be more careful and not to repeat stupid choices . Forr the bad it is a forkes road. The bad can choose to say bad Double Down and see where it leads where it always leads. The other choice is for the bad to learn from their suffering listen to their conscience and strive to be better than they were hoping it's not too late to turn things around. There's a difference between being broken, being killef and being destroyed. As long as you're breathing there's hope and time to change ourselves and our situation,. Everything is choice. One can be killed and good or bad that is the end of your story. But if one is not killed one is merely broken then one can choose to heal or one can choose to . In body or Spirit it is the same. But to be destroyed in one spirit is worse than death to be unmade one must choose to be unmade. For a bad person to abandon their identity and choose to be something else this is a fine thing but to Lose Yourself completely and become something horrible is far worse things than death. To be destroyed in spirit, requires a certain amount of capitulation on one sense of self and identity. A choice to be on made. And when that happens one might as well be dead. But as I said there is a difference between being broken and allowing oneself to be destroyed. Ned Stark choose to try to save his family at the cost of his honor his reputation and his life but he did not abandon himself. It was preferable to die then to become a puppet or an amoral person and tool of others. Where there is life, there is hope. . The books go into more detail and the show does very fine job . The books give more information but the show is had such an effect on me that honestly when I do read the books I see the characters from the show. Love your reactions and I'm grateful for the commentary. May your House wax strong and endure for a thousand years.

This was perfectly thought-out by Tywin. He knew Jaime would chime in. Jaime is heir of casterly rock, Tyrion goes off to the wall, and Tywin rules until the end of his days. Remember when Tywin told Cersei about Joffrey "I wish you knew how to manipulate him"...... Cersei replies "perhaps you should stop him from doing what he likes"..... Tywin replies "I will!"........... then immediately, they cut to Lady Olenna in the next scene.... that was a nice way of the producers foreshadowing events. So in my opinion, it seems, Little Finger, Lady Olenna, and Tywin were the ones responsible Joffrey's death.

The amazing actor who plays Ramsay was in the inhumans tv show What a waste of a talent He also played young Hitler which I think is appropriate because Ramsay is just like a little hitler

This episode is one of my all time favourites because it's very much a turning point kind of episode. Tyrion's speech and condemnation of King's Landing is spectacular. Shae's betrayal was painful to watch; as you both noted, something had to have happened, but what? (no spoilers). And then that song plays on the closing credits and Steve's like "I just got chills" and Nikki's exasperating "and the Rains of Castamere"...Priceless. So much fun watching you both, thank you for this.

Great episode and great reactions from you both, Nikki and Steven, as usual. PS. While that giant, fictitious statue straddling two points in the harbor was a nice visual, indeed, do not forget that one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was the Colossus of Rhodes which was a statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes. Unfortunately, a little more than half a century later an earthquake hit the Greek island and toppled the statue at its knees and eight centuries later, Arab conquerors had the bronze statue's remains melted down. A shame, as I'm sure we all would love to have actually been able to see it (and I apologize in advance, for the drawn-out history lesson).

Please don’t forget that Dany is new to ruling and ruling a country so she will make mistakes and wrong judgements. And the dragons are basically teenagers at this point and not listening to their mum... I crapped my pants during Tyrion’s trial it was epic on so many levels Cersei may have threatened Shay and that’s why she betrayed Tyrion

Honestly, ppl make excuses abt Sansas treasons and mistakes cuz she was a "child" even thought she had ppl raising her with morals, while when ANIMAL teen dragons going through puberty rebel a bit, its Danys fault, kill the dragons cuz they're dangerous 🙄

Tyrion is my favourite character and this scene proves why. Also, Peter Dinklage is a fantastic actor and I definitely couldn't tell that he was from New Jersey as his accent is on point.

Sorry but tyrion's "meltdown" makes him more of a badass. As low status as he is as a dwarf, the fact that he always stands his ground and Never Back Down whether it's a bratty turd King or his father constantly putting him in his place and threatening his life the men never backs down. He would make a better, more capable and far more noble leader of Kings landing than the show has seen yet. Tyrion for president 2020!

That scene with Drogon and the goats was a microcosm of the Game of Thrones show. Everything seems peaceful, a man is enjoying life with his family and pets, and all of a sudden.... BOOM! tragedy strikes

Peter Dinklage is a freakin' genius. Brilliant scene. Courtroom speech is in my top 10 GOT scenes of all time, any season. What a talent.
