The name of The Reach might refer to the extent of the reach of Garth's Green Hand. It seems many of the Gods and heroes and forms of resurrection are strongly tied to regions of land (and sea).

Now for my GOT related comment. I'm not saying there's a 100% correlation here, but the passage quoted about "young girls flowered at his smile" reminded me of Melisandre bleeding from her loins at the sight of Bloodraven in her flames. Seeing as the old powers are waking, a lot of them through Bran w/Bloodraven's assistance... I have to wonder if that situation w/Mel is an example.

Ashley of Naath a good possibility for the first men renouncing their gods in favor of the children's is that they saw Garth as an aspect of the gods worshipped by the children and the common ground made them feel comfortable. They are both gods based off nature that require sacrifice.

woa woa woa, i have to pause at the 7:00, men offered up their virgin daughters to this king, he begot many children, who in turn had lots of children, in fact a strong portion of they people we have met are descended from this one many. he lived so long ago most of his life is told as legend so we dont really know much about him, he traveled the land spilling over his deeds upon the ground, he changed every society he visited, they either died or followed him and his cause, he was an inclusive man but a king is still a king therefore must punish, noble blood is held in high regard, bastards are raised as sons, equal be separate., acknowledging merit, turned nomadic peoples into states with stationary and constant occupation............. who did i just describe?

Come on we all know Garth was and alien. 'Greenhand' or little green man. I think I can explain this whole thing. Marklar, these marklars want to change your marklar. They don't want Marklar or any of these marklars to live here because it's bad for their marklar. They use Marklar to try and force marklars to believe they're marklar. If you let them stay here, they will build marklars and marklars. They will take all your marklars and replace them with Marklar. These marklar have no good marklar to live on Marklar, so they must come here to Marklar. Please, let these marklars stay where they can grow and prosper without any marklars, marklars, eh or marklars.

Def gotta take everything from TWOIAF with at least a grain or two of salt it's a biased work, against magic and I have a snaking suspicion the Targaryens as well. Best way for Citadel to kill the talk of magic is make previous dragonriding kings look like dump while simultaneously bolstering the Baratheon reign.

you guys outdid yourselves again this is epic and so enlightening. i love a lot of your videos the Machiavelli of westeros is genius, your catlyn sucks videos are strong arguments and entertaining as hell . but these old power awakening series are truly epic, ive watched them all so far and even had trouble following where you intended to go with them because they seemed to rather jump around but todays video ties them all in and its truly awesome. thank you for the upload

sorry...when we are making them we never know how long they're going to be until they're done, or when we realize that we don't have time to do a topic justice, we have to end with cliffhangers because there is no sense in partially explaining something in a video when its clear that we would need a whole video to explain what we're thinking

I had to take a hiatus from RU-vid but I have been tempted back. Nicely done video, as usual. Maybe the fertility of Garth is related to the idea of the first night, and the chance of spreading the seed, which is apparently strong! I also find the polygamous marriages interesting and I think there might be more of that which was practiced by the first men before the Andals and the faith put the kibosh to it, as well as blood sacrifice! Looking forward to more more video's from you guys!

I absolutely LOVE your videos and look forward to each one. This is the first I've seen of Garth Greenhand. Your videos and views are different than most (esp. the "Why Catelyn Sucks" series - because most almost glorify her) and that's what makes each video so interesting. Keep up the amazing work :)

We independently research everything and have paid very little attention to other people's theories since the end of our first read a few years ago...at that point, we were unsatisfied with the answers other people had provided to questions we had, and having no idea when TWOW was coming, and we lack the patience to wait, so we decided to try to figure it all out ourselves

he was one of the first legendary characters from history that we took a serious interest in...we thought he was a God back when we did our king's blood video but hadn't done all the research we have now and weren't sure enough to go for it in that video so we felt like we needed to revisit it

You guys are the best and the worst. I LOVE all your videos, so enlightening and by far the best content out there. But how are you going to leave us with a cliffhanger like that????? Also I commented before that Mel's actress said in an interview that The showrunners told her that Mel is over 200 years old which is too old to be Shiera Seastar. Was wondering if you had a chance to look into that further into that?

that is a very good question...it seems like the First Men surnames were somewhat descriptive, but as for the rest I have no idea

That pact... was just an agreement to worship the old gods in front of the Weirwoods.... NOT the weirwoods themselves... and NOT the gods of the children of the forest (unless the children also were worshipping the old gods). It wasn't long before things were conflated and the first men began to take up sacrificing to the weirwoods and regarding them as some sort of representation of the old gods themselves. Seriously, if it's between the god of the living and the god of the death... it's hard for me to think that ALL the children are actually worshipping the god of death. I mean... they are living creatures, after all. I think it's more like achieving a balance between chaos and order... but like anything, polarization happens and pits people against each other. Tastes great/Less filling... lol. Half Full/Half Empty... Something has caused the natural order to be WAY out of balance... and that must be due to the effects of the "magic" in GRRM's universe.

Man these videos are so passe. Where's the awesome conjecture? I keep waiting to find out if Ned Stark warged into one of those pigeons that were waiting to take a shit on his head as it was being nipped by Ser Ilyn Payne. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised. Incendiary videos! I keep waiting for others to change their' theories but with conjecture like I mentioned, why would The L*#t yprah even try. hahaha...it very well could be...when we have to try to find pictures of historical or non-show characters it is often difficult to find one that is good enough quality to use so we start grabbing pictures that "will work"

I am listening to this again and something just occurred to me. Is it possible that the Green Men on the Isle of Gods are the clergy of the First Men? I am assuming because their name is "green men" they are somehow connected to Garth the Greenhand.

We know of some of the gods the First Men worshipped before taking the children's gods. In the story of Durran Godsgrief there was the god of the sea and the goddess of the wind. On the Three Sisters there was the Lord of the Skies and the Lady of the Waves.

I've watched this again after re-watching the series. I know you guys dive more into the books than the show. but I think the showrunners pay homage to what Martin was wanting to do or is going to do. Like what I asked about with Mance & the sword of the morning in the show. There looks & what they said. "I wish you good fortune in the wars to come" It's like he new the great war was coming. In the first season it was said many times about Jon Arynes last words were "The seed is strong"... If the Green Hand literally was the ancestor too all the houses that have been fighting would be so ironic. Including Targaryens... This is the Adam & Eve with a lot more Eves of The Song of Ice and Fire! Also Lady Crane in season 6 another shout out nice! Oh yeah I forget... How many bastards did Robert have 20 something? How many great houses are there exactly?

I hadn't thought of that...I'm pretty sure Rhaegar died in the spring...its never actually implicitly said, but harrenhal happened in the year of the false spring, and seasons last years in this world so I feel like it still would have been spring when Rhaegar died and maybe summer when Dany was born

I am pausing before I watch. clicked to see date seen mention of earthly god and stopped. I just comment on another channel ongoing conversation and it was asked what was so special about the Starks. this is something that has occurred to me recently I want to share before I watch this. and ty for last video I needed a muse I was stuck on painting :D. .. OK now basically my reply is that starks are descendants of gods or demigod maybe along that line as well as targaryen. I think season may even go as far into not being related to the dragons cuz wouldn't the argument be made that all the years with Supposedly no dragons (I believe there are more another conversation ) it should have been winter the entire time. but if we think of it like the bloodlines of starks/ice and Targaryen /fire and their numbers we see why we still had seasons. people put too much science into it when it's fantasy. this is a magical world would make sense too if a demigod or descendant of a god or reborn even would be the balance his blood his bloodline. I can't wait to watch this now had to share my madness with you. I think all elemental gods represented and you guys been nailing it!

I seen the notification no joke as soon as I finished typing comment on the other lol I swear they're in my head over here but I'm not complaining at all. Thanks to waking the dragon last time helped unblock my artist block I needed a muse to finish a painting of Dany and they unlocked my mind but they are great at that anyway. I Love this channel! Unrelated to this specific topic of Garth but sometimes i worry that, after all this time, with all these awesome theories and legends within ASOIAF we either will never get to know 90% of it or if do, the actual events and stories will be nowhere as good as the theories. On a brighter note, your videos are fucking brilliant!

I'm really enjoying your videos & your channel. I'm a huge mythology/folklore nerd & unfortunately haven't read the GOTs novels but enjoy the show. I know I miss much of subtext & rich fantasy elements of the books. Your videos fill in those blanks for me. And it's wonderful to know someone else saw similar themes of light/dark & chaos/balance of Egyptian mythology being so prevalent. You guys are doing a wonderful job♡

we first caught the mythology stuff when we started researching Bloodraven and weirwoods...at that point we had just started piecing the religions together and were convinced they were vitally important to figuring out what the heck is going on...we were about 90% sure Garth was a god when we made our king's blood video but couldn't place what the significance of it was until we got into the mythology aspects of the story

Don't mean to criticize, but did you mean Garth's "Notable ancestors" or "Notable descendants"? Also, Garth reminds me of Johnny Appleseed. Or maybe it should be the other way around. Thanks for another informative video. I do not have the history book about TWOIAF you discussed, and so your insight into it is especially interesting to me.

I have a lingering question for quite a while. If the particular book titled The World of Ice & Fire were written during the Lannister's peak power why it's called the world of ice and fire? the maester yandel or gildain would never thought such title will have so much impact in the wise timeline. That's why at first I thought the book were written after the event of the dream of spring, meaning the war for the dawn 2.0 already happen and won over. That's why these maesters name the book with such title. If it is written in the current timeline (maybe align with book 1-3) why they mention "ice and fire" in the title? what correlation they have with those elements? as if the people of the seven kingdoms will care or have knowledge about it, unlike us who are all fascinated by the novels, therefore familiar with those "ice and fire" thingy

I think the real villain is the TREES. The weirwoods to be precise. What if Garth "woke up" the trees, like the elves with Fangorn forest? Martin loves Tolkien, so what if the weirwoods don't serve the children, rather the children serve the weirwoods? And what if the first wars started with the trees being cut, so the Ents of Martin's world, sent the children and the giants and animals to fight for them? What if the weirwoods could think and want and plan, just not move? All MEN must die...

Garth gives off a strong king Arthur vibe to me. especially given the world of ice and fire description of him being maybe based upon an old watchief or petty king of some kind. That's virtually the exact same archaeological explanation as king Arthur has in real life. a great king who reigned over all thr tribes, plus the map of westeros and esos is a very distorted great Britain and Ireland type of landmass. You have the Britons fighting off a Saxon invasion in Arthur and you have a first man invasion in got so it's many of the same details just shuffled around There's also a bit of the Greek God Dionysus in there. that may be worth looking into as well; including the greenman deity/legend from northern Europe. that matches the "darker god" the green man died and was reborn each year and served as a fertility symbol.

Garth Greenhand is such an easy myth to dismiss. Oh, so all the houses that are currently prominent in the Reach just so happen to have similar godly origins? What a coincidence! But to accept these claims as fact, and then to cast them against the upcoming battles creates a whole different viewpoint that is just as likely. Who better to represent Life than family of The Gardener King?

Ykow, people tend to glorify ssimple things with time specially historical events like the migrations, with time the stories get more and more vague, most likely Garth Greenhand may have been just a Lord of the First Man who led them in the first wave of migrations and that had many sons, just that a common First Man lord
