Game of Thrones In-Depth Analysis : The Two Faces of Sandor Clegane!

Sandor wants love of a family which is why he connects with the Starks. Of all the families in Westeros the Wolf would appropriately adopt the Hound.

Love Sandor and Arya together. Priceless!

From the beginning The Hound was my favourite. No nonsense true bad ass with a soul. Saves Sansa, takes Arya away from the Red Wedding. Tried to take her to safety in The Vale. Avenging his only friend after he was hanged by the renegade Banner-less Brothers, what more can I say, a real bad ass but with a soul.

Sandor Clegane was the perfect protector for Arya. Who could understand Arya's anger better than anyone? He had been angry since he was a child too. He was able to teach Arya some valuable lessons. I think Ayra was able to soften the Hound in some way. He really came to care for Arya and Sansa too. Arya couldn't kill him because she came to care about him too. I loved their time together. Arya needed someone to let her be herself and not judge. He accepted her more than anyone except Jon.

Great video! Sander has such great character development in the books. So glad Arya didn't mercy kill him after the one-to-one with Brienne. He's got a special purpose in the wars to come.

I always liked The Hound, but after rewatching the series he shot up to my top 3 behind Arya and Tyrion. I would watch a spin-off show about him and Arya wandering the countries across the narrow sea.

Something that occurred to me on my last watch-through was, is Sandor a virgin? His trauma might have stalled his development in a number of ways. It could be why he bonds best with children - his childhood was the last time he had friends or at least the last time he had normal human interaction. After the fire he was isolated from his family emotionally by their cover-up of his brother's deed and isolated from everyone else both by being his brother's brother but because most people really do judge by appearances. I very much doubt more than a handful of people said anything to him from then til the Starks arrival in King's Landing that wasn't either an order or an insult, and often both. He's a second son, due no title or land so he doesn't even have that incentive to garner women's attention. His brother didn't just scar him, he tarred him forever with the brush of his own actions. The Mountain is a renowned - if you can use that word in this context - rapist and a particularly brutal one at that. This adds yet another layer of fear to keep the ladies away from poor Sandor, and yet Sandor himself despised everything that his brother was. His refusal of knighthood and disdain for knights in general is an obvious symptom of this. We see at his core a good man with a kind heart whose rough edges are entirely environmental. He is the woodsman in this fairy tale - they even had him chopping wood for gods' sakes - and how many times now has he saved the girl, but always as the protector, never the prince. In all the time Sandor dragged Arya about trying to sell her to her various family it never occurred to him to merely marry her himself, put a child in her ASAP and create a claim for the North of his own. Many a man would've tried it, as we've seen in Sansa's sorry tale, but as yet we've never even seen him demonstrate the smallest of sexual motives. If women won't come to him and he doesn't go to them then the only remaining options would be prostitution or rape. He doesn't seem to frequent the brothels and in the first episode of season one he expresses disdain for those who "pay' for it" so that would seem to be out. His reactions on multiple occasions demonstrate quite adequately his despisal of rape and rapists. When he's trying to goad Arya into killing him he suggests that he should have raped Sansa precisely because it's one of the worst things he can think of doing, which brings us neatly to the line that spawned this train of thought in the first place, "At least I'd have one happy memory!" Poor Sandor has never known the loving touch of a woman. Does that make his fight with Brienne Virgin Bowl? Anyway, I for one wish him the happy ending he deserves.

Sandor is also one of my fave characters, and I agree with this analysis. He knows the world for what it truly is, and how the more powerful can terrorize the weak. Sandor does seem to also enjoy fighting and killing, even if it's not just for brutal reasons. Perhaps one of the few pleasures he can get is to kill somebody, so his version of vigilante justice.

My favorite line by Sandor: "What the fook is a Lommy?" I can't wait to see the first conversation between Arya and Sandor.

Sandor has seen the falseness of the Knights & high borns and wants no part of that falseness. He has more honor than many of the great knights in out story. As a KG, he didn't beat Sansa and even the sadistic Joffrey was afraid to order him to do so. Being hurt when he was a child is probably one of the driving reasons that he protects both Sansa & Arya. Can't wait for more! 🐺🐺🐺

IMHO, what sets Sandor Clegane apart from most of the brutal characters of that era & making him my favorite character.... is the code he lives by. He knows his size, power, and ability with a sword, yet he's NOT CRUEL. He neither enjoys nor dislikes killing. It's merely a fact of life in the times he lives in & accepts it like he accepts breathing . He also won't hesitate to kill an unarmed, wounded man... showing them mercy. He's honest, ALWAYS speaking his mind & doesn't give a fuck who he offends. Finally, Sandor Clegane has balls of Valerian Steel who doesn't suffer cunts well.

sandor is a got version of "guts" the anti hero of the manga berserk..

He is very honorable -

Sandor and Gregor are more complex than they first appear. Ser Gregor has a fondness for Milk of the Poppy and Sandor is into throwing Stark girls over his shoulder and carrying them off.

hes everybodys favorite. the stark girls would have been screwed without him- yet hes the absolute opposite of who ned-or cunty catelyn, would have wanted watching over them- but definitely the one they needed. and they brought up the hound in aryas training in the house of black and white for a reason. theyre not done. every1 says that the hound should/will sacrifice himself for the stark girls, but it would be soooo much better if they saved him. they both owe him their lives and he has never had anyone. it would be a much better story. jon wouldnt even think his sisters know the infamous hound. someone in his life needs to go to bat for him.

I love that part when he kneels before Robert and u hear the swoosh of the sword. You can hear the true force of it the hate but the Hound knelt before Robert and didn't bat an eye like it was an easy miss. I think he will definitely be able to take him out Especially after his own journey. He's a Stronger man hehehe Love it Great job! I can't wait for part 2 woot

Nice, Kyle. Looking forward to the next part. I love how the concepts of honor, duty, vows, beauty and being a "true knight" are explored through Sandor's arc (and Sansa's arc, as pertains to him and her own growth about such thoughts), and Jaime and Brienne's arcs.

When Sandor confirmed to Brienne yes he is watching over (Protecting) Arya, that was the turning point. Before that it was little hints of humanity, but they were fleeting and sporadic, after, he was one of the best (Arya did him wrong by walking away, but this is Westeros). In The Red Keep, Sandor turning Arya away so she could live on was one of the most touching scenes in the series.

I love how kind he is in the books to animals as well. Loves Stranger the horse and obviously dogs.

If you think about it, The Hound and Wolverine have a shit load of things in common (espeially after seeing Logan)... its creepy... Canine nicknames (or at least beast / canine sounding ones, dont know if wolverine animal is a bear or a canine) The deep duality to their characters They're nearly unstoppable as fighters, and theyre complete badasses The way the Hound came back from the dead... *wink wink* Plenty of on-screen interaction with little girl characters (Sansa, Arya / Rogue, X-23) Greatly motivated / pushed in the right direction by a certain elderly figure at one point of their lives (Brother Ray / Professor X)

I love Sandor..He is one of my favorite characters! He kept Arya alive & Sansa especially when she wz getting ready to push Jeffrey off the top at Kings Landing...I can't wait to see Arya & Sandor reunion😀

He''s not a true knight, because that title's reputation was always more idealistic than reality. Real knights are Gregor and the like. Sandor is a true hero and something more that doesn't need a title or honorific. He's a human being with empathy who uses his strength and skill with honor and takes responsibility for others. He's tough and roguish when he has to be but doesn't kill without reason and doesn't cause more harm than he has to.

You make a good, succinct case. Early on, I was partial to Davos Seaworth and Jorah Mormont, and they still loom large in my mind. However, the Hound's crude, unapologetic honesty have made him a favorite.

Sandor is such a great character, and he's perfectly portrayed by the actor Rory McCann. He's my absolute favorite character of the series as well. Just multi-dimensional, and bad-ass.

I love Sandor, and agree that he is probably the most interesting character in the show. I think that he looks upon the world with disgust. I think that he see these families with their knighted thugs, that trample without care on the regular folk that just want to live their lives in peace with their families. That nobody, regardless of bloodline or title has the right to harm others. Maybe I am giving too much credit, but I see a real internal struggle in him that is complex and one that you root for the good side to come out. Great video!

Since you've covered what made Sandor the way he is how about what made the Mountain the way he is? Is he a bad seed or did something happen to him? Anybody who could smash a baby's head againt a wall obviously "ain't right". He's showen a perpencity towards EXTREME violence at a very young age with the mutilation of his brother. We really know very little about their parents and upbringing. Actually I myself know very little about the Mountains background as an adult. How did he come into Tywin's service? Anyway, just a thought. Seven Blessings ~A~

An accurate assessment of Sandor Clegane, I think. He's very definitely his own man and marches to the beat of his own drum. In his own way he's quite principled, though those around him might not be, and is always prepared to do what he thinks is right and f..k anybody else's opinion. And he's, of course, prepared to back himself every time and there are not too many who can stand against him. I look forward to the inevitable showdown between him and his brother. i think it will be epic!

The Hound is a true Hero. A person's surroundings shape them and Westeros is probably the most violent place ever. Sandor is a realist who knows only the strong survive yet underneath the hard outer shell is a really warm-hearted person that's simply suffered too much in life.

He is definitely a well written character.

Yes Brianna, Sandor was trying his best to protect Arya. And was doing a fine job of it. Seems he's the true savior of the Stark girls. Even helped Arya get revenge on Poliver.

I love Sandor.He is the most truthful of all the people in the show. I think he told Sansa ND Arya both some hard truths,that they didn't believe or maybe understand at the time,but knew later on as being true. I think he is hero.Id like a video on vareys.

Great stuff, Sandor's one of my faves in the series. I love his sense of resigned pragmatism about things like knighthood & how the world is, he see's all the bs people do to each other but he's got more of a "it is what it is, people are shit" attitude.

Azor Ahype Good video, quick question; are you at all a fan of the graphic novel/manga Berserk? IF you are could you do a compare/contrast between Sandor Clegane and the main character Guts from Berserk? I personally believer that they are almost 2 similar characters in 2 different settings.

One my favorite character, I kind of agree with his opinion about knights in got. A lot characters who are knight do not have any knightly characteristics, and the ones that do have honor are dead which suck except for brienne.

Hi Kyle, I really loved this video. You must have (like me) jumped up and down at the end of the opening sequence of ep.7's "A Broken Man". Could you do a video of what you predict is Sandor Clegane's purpose ultimately in the War for the Dawn? Sure, spoilers suggests that he'll be instrumental in capturing a wight to aid in Jon's quest to convince the Lords of Westeros of the threat at hand. But... the show repeatedly has thrown in characters like Beric, Thoros and Bro Ray to tell us viewers that Sandor has a greater "purpose". Could he be Azor Ahai? Would he become a sworn shield for the Stark Sisters? Let us know what you think...

Awesome video and love your channel! I have always thought of Sandor as being a complex anti-hero and share your belief as to why he has such negative feelings about knights...after all, how can a man like his brother Gregor be an "honorable" knight while also being such a dishonorable killing machine. I also believe the reason he became such a fierce protector of the Stark girls was because of his own sister dying of mysterious circumstances, so perhaps Sandor is protecting them because he was unable to save his own sister. What do you think his motivations are for protecting Sansa and Arya?

Tougher girls than you have tried to kill me. I was so happy when they brought his character back! You asked for video ideas, well I've got a doozy of a theory about Cerci's death that I haven't seen anywhere, but it hinges on the faceless men being able to wear faces of people who aren't dead. See where I'm going here? Cerci is at the top of the Hound's little pup, Arya's list. How many people, or which specific people do you suppose can get close to her? What if it's Arya wearing Jamie's face, being aided by the Hound? Which would also be a good set up for the Clegane bowl we all desperately want to see.

The major pieces are already being revealed. Mother of Dragons. Walker. The Hound. The Mountain. Arya, the Faceless One. Wouldn't be surprised if the writer made it so that the major pieces did reflect that circle of gods, and each one was the personification of, or the representative for that god.
