Not true. "I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come." Also, leaving the Night's Watch on the basis of a loophole that isn't even a loophole isn't honorable in the slightest.

I don't know, he gave his life for it and this resurrection is pretty much a new life. If it said something like, "In life and death," or "I pledge my lives" I would agree. This doesn't seem like a loophole, as if there was an after life (which this is now that I think of it haha) and he'd still have to be at the wall as a ghost (which he is now it seem). A living ghost and Ghost Direwolf, best buds forever.

Jon clearly lost the support of the watch the ring leaders were executed, but a large part of the watch no longer supported him, also the watch was reduced to a handful of men not able to even defend castle black. So Jon stepped down not back to the ranks because he may just get a knife in the back/front again. Olly was young but he had committed the same offence as the other members of the watch, its a world of no parole's no reprieves and to have spared Olly would send the message that you can break the law and avoid punishment this really is not that kind of world.

To be fair to Jon, he DIED, so he has fulfilled his oath to keep watch until his death. He FINALLY has a chance to be free from that oath, and I in NO way blame him for taking it. He can get married, have kids, own property, and fight for anyone he wants, for any cause he wants…. he is free, and in his place I would definitely want to be free too.

Ollie was not "just following along" with the plot to kill Jon. That is the real significance of Ollie's conversation with Sam when Jon was at Hardhome. Sam told Ollie that "sometimes a man has to make a hard choice even when it seems wrong to others." Ollie asked Sam "Do you really believe that?" And Sam said "With all my heart." Unfortunately Sam was talking about Jon's hard decision to let the wildlings through the wall, while Ollie was thinking about making the hard choice to betray Jon. So Ollie didn't make his choice to betray Jon lightly. He thought long and hard about it. He was also the one who lured as Jon to his death. So though he is young and had ample reason to hate the wildlings, he is also treacherous and in the world of GOT got exactly what he deserved.
@ZelbeQahi
@ZelbeQahi Год назад
History is ripe with using the young in war. If you can stab a heart or pull a trigger in ethnic cultures during war, how is Ollie’s age an issue? Even today kids are shot by the police with the police claiming fear and self defense. So, I’m not sympathetic to Ollie at all. Tragic as his life was, he never found peace and chose to live in vengeance. The Khmer Rouge’s army were teenagers or younger, the African revolts and civil wars have many young men fighting in them.

Fun Fact: Ser Arthur Dayne, Kings Guard to Rhaegar Targaryen, is/was arguably THE BEST sword fighter in Westeros. They had him dual wield in the show to emphasize his skill. He uses 'Dawn', the legendary family sword of House Dayne, forged from the heart of a fallen star (meteor). Similar in strength and sharpness to Valyrian steel, but is pale and white in color.

Another Novel Note: Ser Arthur Dayne's house sword is called Dawn. While many great houses pride themselves on swords made from Valyrian steel, Dawn was created when House Dayne's founder followed a falling star and used the ore of the meteorite to forge the greatsword Dawn. Also, unlike other houses that pass swords from lords to heirs, Dawn is only bestowed on a member of house Dayne, if they're deemed worthy. House Dayne's high standards and martial prowess are why Ser Arthur Dayne was hailed as the greatest swordsman in the seven kingdoms.
@LordBloodraven
@LordBloodraven 6 лет назад
Diana Gero Eddard used it to kill Ser Arthur Dayne, then returned it to Arthur's sister, Ashara Dayne. Sadly, after Dawn was returned to its mount above the hearth at Starfall, Ashara committed suicide. It remains bolted its mount, waiting for House of Dayne to produce a knight that they regard as being worthy of wielding Dawn and earning the title Sword of the Morning.
@NOHOPHOTO
@NOHOPHOTO 5 лет назад
That's a good unanswered question as to who'll be wielding Dawn in the war against the dead. The show has not dealt with that at all. Except to proof the theory and identity of azor ahai. He's left a new Lord Commander of the highest character. He has executed the traitors. He has done his full and total duty, and honestly, how could anyone expect him to do more? He's already given his life for the watch, can you really ask him to do it again? He has other things to take care of now. Jon is an honorable man. Alliser's last words are a big kick in the face for Jon, who's just been resurrected and is totally confused about the implications of that. Alliser and Jon both died for what they thought was right- but only Alliser will know peace now in return. He's basically telling Jon, have fun never resting in peace until all the world's problems are solved, going through hell and then getting brought back in a cycle that has no foreseeable end. Personally, I have a different take on Jon's sentence than y'all. I don't think it was out revenge or spite or anger or emotion or state of mind that he executed them (especially Ollie). It was more out of duty. If anything, it was his emotion that tempted him to perhaps spare Ollie. But duty to the Watch and that Ned Stark honor won out.

I understand Olly's position, but this is the same situation as Janos Slynt. This is treason and Olly participated, and in the eyes of the law he is not a child he is a Brother of the Night's Watch. The only punishment is death and there isn't a way around it. Jon executed Slynt for the same reason. Olly was just taken in because there was no where else to keep him - he's kinda like the situation that Gilly and Little Sam were in.

As the infamous Sword of the Morning, Ser Arthur wields two weapons and cuts through all of Ned Stark’s men in defense of the Tower of Joy. While Ser Arthur appears to be a just and good man, his fighting is of the most vicious and unrelenting order. With Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven looking on, they finally understand that Ned Stark defeated the legendary swordsmen not through tactics or talent, but through Howland Reed’s unmentioned backstabbing. Though Ned delivers the coup de grace to the Sword of the Morning, it remains clear: Ser Arthur Dayne was deservedly the most feared swordsman in all of Westeros. I left my other reactions for you guys. It was an emergency ✔👀 My opinion on Olly is that he deserved it. Olly wasn't following along, he genuinely wanted to kill Jon for supporting the Wildlings because of what they did to his friends and family. There was a lot of foreshadow for his betrayal too. He's a child yes, but he's old enough to know right from wrong and he knew the consequences.

Killing his lord commander who trained him loved him and made him his Stewart and treated him like the little brothers he lost doesn't bring back his dead parents , Jon killed the man who killed his father and he killed the woman who killed his mother it's fucking over !!! Kill the man who avenged your father's death makes no sense , the night watch using a child to execute there mutiny also makes no sense not that they are full of Honor but I mean if Olly wasn't a bad seed to start with he wouldn't have lent his ears to ser Allister who didn't really do anything for him except try to turn him against the Lord commander who loves him like a younger brother . This season, especially this episode, is about seeing things from multiple perspectives. Allister and Olly saw Jon betray the Night's Watch and killed him for it. Vala saw Daenerys conquer the city and helped the Sons on the Harpy kill the Unsullied. The Dothraki tradition is for the widows of khals to return to Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys didn't do this, so she violated the rules. Arthur Dayne and the other kingsguard were honoring their prince's orders even after the Targaryens had lost. The High Sparrow is right about how the highborn exploit the commoners, and Tommen is right that he's needlessly punishing Cersei by not letting her go to Myrcella's funeral. Smalljon Umber saw what happened when his father backed Robb as an independent king and was murdered at the Red Wedding, so he handed over Rickon to the new Warden of the North to keep his house safe. Arya disobeyed the tenets of the Faceless Men, so she was blinded and had to learn to become no one to earn back her sight. As people say, the moral universe of Thrones is gray. The point is, there are no good choices in Westeros. Everyone has to make bad choices. The characters we follow don't necessarily make better choices, but they are more lucky, or more powerful, and the story is from their perspective.
@antigonesmith9781

I think the question boils down to: Can you be the Prince That Was Promised *and* the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch? We saw, in his conversations with Stannis, how Jon's oaths and responsibilities restrict him to very specific levels of involvement in world affairs. The Army of the Dead faces no such restriction. What is Jon Snow's destiny? It could quite possibly require more of him than can be engaged under the restraints of his current vows.

The flashback with Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven took place in Dorne at what's referred to as the Tower of Joy. Ned Stark was there looking for his sister Lyanna who was kidnapped. The man that Ned and his men fought against was Ser Arthur Dayne, The Sword of the Morning. He wielded Dawn, a magical sword said to have been carved from a falling star in a place called Starfall. Ser Arthur Dayne was the greatest swordsman that ever lived. He was Ned Stark's hero, as a boy he wanted to be him when he grew up. As for the execution of the traitors of the Night's Watch. Jon respected Ser Alliser Thorne. Both men were doing what they thought was the right thing. Ser Alliser Thorne was a Targaryen loyalist during Robert's Rebellion that overthrew the Mad King Aerys Targaryen. After the sack of King's Landing, Tywin Lannister gave Thorne and other Targaryen loyalists a choice: exile at the Wall or death. They chose the Wall, but Thorne never forgot or forgave. Ned Stark fought in that war against the Targaryen's. Jon being Ned's son, Alliser was pretty much destined to hate him.

What people don’t understand about olly is that he was a kid. A kid that witnessed wildlings kill his family. He had a thenn whisper in his ear that he was going to eat his dead mother and father. He avenged his father by killing Ygritte and tried to avenge his mother by lunging at tormound. He fled to the nights watch who promised him they’d avenge his family and village and here is the leader protecting those who destroyed his life and orphaned him. Jon was a tad naive to just let that go almost. Olly would’ve had Alister whispering in his ear that this is the right thing to do, they are going to come into castle black and kill you the same way the killed your mother and father. Jon is going to let that happen. Are you going to become a man of the nights watch and do what’s right? Pre resurrection, Jon would’ve shown mercy to olly but we are seeing the effects of the resurrection on him.

Here’s how I always thought about John walking out of castle black. 1) they’re still his friends and if they call on him he will come, especially because the war with the white walkers is going to have first contact at the wall and he needs to go get more men from the north, he has the best chance of rallying the northmen to come since he’s Ned’s son. And 2) your oath lasts until you die. John died. So his oath is null and void when he comes back from the dead. This is round fucking 2 baby! Time to do some shit differently, try another way to tackle the same problem.

You miss Joffrey? I like the way the High Sparrow echoed Lord Tywin's words when he spoke to Tommen. It earned him instant respect with the king. The little castle where Young Ned Stark and his companions fought Prince Rhaegar's personal guard is called the Tower of Joy in Dorne. The skilled swordsman is Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, the best swordsman of his time. The man who stuck the sword in his back is Howland Reed, father of Meera and Jojen. Finally, I always like the very realistic hanging scene. It shows how brutal hanging is. Noticed Nikki couldn't watch.

Not only that but also go against Ser Allister, the most senior and storied member of the watch left, whom you look up and want to impress? I find that highly unlikely. It’s not like they thought they were doing wrong, they believed they were doing the right thing, “what needed to be done”

I agree with you ManicMeeks Jon was looking at the bigger picture Olly just couldn't get over his hate for the wildlings, instead of killing your friend why not go to the land where the wildlings are and murder them not Jon. Anyway everyone copes with situations different because I know I wouldn't do that to a friend if they were only looking out for everyone, if I was that bothered and eager for revenge I would seek out the people responsible and kill them. I don't understand people who try to insist that everyone would do the same thing as Olly if they were in that position 🤔 erm NO! Everyone is different and act different and this is why I love GOT it shows different characters and different responses to similar situations which reflects true life.

Imagine the series out of Olly's POV. You live a peaceful life and the wildlings, led by Tormund, come to murder and eat everyone at your village including your parents. Then you go to the wall and the wildlings attack killing over half the guys there. You save Jon Snow by killing the wildling lady that was about to shoot him and then he goes and buries her. Wierd but ok. Tormund is in prison and the wildlings are defeated. You help Jon win the election because he became a mentor for you and then Jon decides to free Tormund, help him save more of the cannibal savages and gives the cannibal savages the exact lands your family lived on. Then you have Ser Alliser manipulating Olly and telling him that letting the wildlings through the gates will result in many more dead farmers and there is no way of stopping them as long as Jon is Lord Commander. He probably even told him that the white walkers don't exist and that its just an excuse for Jon to help them. Suddenly stabbing Jon almost seems reasonable.

Everyone did what they felt was right... John, Aliser, Ollie. As you said, Ollie’s inability to move past seeing his family/village wiped out is totally understandable, and that made it easier for Ser Aliser and the others to convince him to go along with the mutiny. It’s also clear why John felt they had to be executed, yet was torn about doing it - especially Ollie. I think after that John felt, “I did my best here, and I was murdered for it. Someone else should lead. I have to find my place in the world somewhere else.” Also, he did technically fulfill his oath - serving until death. Ahaha

DreamOfTheRebel what would you rather him do, just let Ollie go without any consequences? There is no juvenile delinquent center to send him off to. So there is not punishment because you sympathize with his reasoning? Well that sends a good message, murdering your lord commander is a crime unless we can sympathize with your reasons for doing so. Most anyone’s crimes would be justified in their own eyes and they wouldn’t feel obligated to abide by any laws. Moreover, Ollie doesn’t have any remorse, he isn’t going to simply fall back in line obeying the orders of Jon or Edd. You let him go free and risk the very likely possibility of him immediately plotting his revenge and doing something like this again.

Ollie was not even sworn because he was not of age. He was not a Knight's Watch member, at least not an official one, plus he was a kid, and one with major trauma at that. No matter how you see it he doesn't deserve the same punishment as the other members. As for what I'd have done, I'd just get him passage to the nearest inhabited village, and then he's on his own. I recognize that it was a pretty impossible situation for Jon either way though.

DreamOfTheRebel so you would let him get away with murder then

Given the circumstances and that as you said there is no juvenile delinquent center, I'd think of it as a better alternative than child execution, yes.

@Joshua Williams - they can just leave him in the cells, it's not like one kid fighting or not is gonna make that much of a difference. they have cells, so let him stay in there. You give all this talk about people paying for crimes, so when is Tormund gonna pay for his crimes? What about Arya? Will she pay for her crimes too? They're both running around doing whatever they want. Why isn't Tormund executed? They let Tormund walk around now after he murdered people. It's not like going from prisoner to being free is that shocking.

'Is that casterly rock'? Yeah, and it's defended by 2 targaryen elite soldiers , and the castle looks like a tower.... =)) -I'm being sarcastic , and a little mean.

Actually, there were 6 Targaryen soldiers and 3 of that were from the Kingsguard.

no worries... at this point have we seen Casterly Rock from the outside? For all I knew, it would have been a tower on the same land. no clue. - Steven

Not really , we know that the old Lannister is a lord = usually lords have villages , castles/cities under their command. They referred to their home as ''Casterly Rock'' and they are very rich. That being said , you didn't actually think that the capital of House Lannister was a tower.....

What's interesting about that last scene is that the actors were actually hung (no, they aren't dead, it was only briefly), so the gargling sounds are as real as anything.
